Editor: Tami Gertzen ▲ A The thrill of being a senior—looking forward to going through Auburn’s front doors knowing there’s no more homework lurking beyond. A Seniors, Dawn McAdams, Tami Gertzen, and Jim Langei enjoy each others company at Camp Casey. ► A crazy bunch of Seniors risk their lives for the camera. 2 Seniors ◄ ◄ It was a dark night when Andy Karmy, along with Lawana Mackenzie and Anita Guinn, were invaded by Karl Hare . . . who landed with a plunk in Andy’s lap just in time for the picture. A, Soaking up a few rays, Debbie Pike and Shellie Nyseth enjoy the seldom-seen sun at Sunset Lake. What are you thinking, George?! Seniors ► A very relaxed Chris Ash kicks back and enjoys the freedom of Camp Casey. ► ► Busily talking on the telephone, Lorri Rowe doesn’t notice a thing going on around her. Wonder who’s on the other end? A moment in time—Erin Myers, Kim Sparks, and Sheri Skievaski are forever caught on Kodak paper. Seniors Not realizing the dial is on 43 instead of 34, Steve Bottomley pulls the lockers from the wall! ▼ A proud SG600 Yamaha poses with its’ owner, Jim Morin and a few of his friends, Jeff Wilbanks and Leif Swanson. A. Who’s the smile for, Stephanie?! This isn’t staged, we stand like this all the time,” claim Sara, Jodi, Kiery and Laura. Seniors We actually made it through four years straight at AAA. Our memories are numerous and unforgettable. As Freshmen, we were scared to death: new school new kids, BIG school BIG kids! Seniors were looked upon with awe. Not a chance,” we thought, of EVER becoming a senior!” Our Sophomore year was much better we were used to the school, knew our way around; we were confident, yet those Seniors sure still looked impressive. Our Junior year we were getting a little tired of Auburn. New kids made it different, and classes were harder, but other than that, not much of a change. We practically owned” the school now— we’d been through just about everything, we innocently thought. Seniors looked a bit younger this year. Our Senior year finally arrived. Wow! We are actually Seniors! Those people we held in awe just three years ago, we’re THEM! Auburn is very familiar by now, but being Seniors had kind of changed things a bit. Nobody to look up to— we’re the top! Now we truly own” the school. Until next year at least. Avendano, George Bottomely, Steve Brown, Shari Calkins, Meredith Clendenon, Caryn Craig, Bernard Dunks, Kelli Frank, Bob Fresk, Sean Georges, Alex Hare, Karl Harter, Tawnya Jones, Darin Kirby, Jeff Klinke, Stephanie Myers, Erin Pierce, Stacy Pike, Debbie Rasco, Don Rollins, Dora Schaeffer, Laura Settlemier, Gina Springer, David Straume, Dwayne Tilley, Leann Weber, Cherie Wilbanks, Jeff Officers: Pres., Cathy Conard; Soc. V.P., Eric Risby; Spiritual V.P., Christine Krizan; Secretary, Sheri Skievaski; Treasurer, Dana Brown; Sgt.-at-Arms, Noel Pierce ▼ Sponsors: Mr. Miller, Mrs. Merry Four-year Seniors 17 There was much excitement in the air when the seniors piled onto several buses for their first trip together. About 100 of the 120 seniors load¬ ed up their luggage and toys and were off to the ferry. Shortly after the ferry ride, we arrived at Fort Casey and piled our junk into the old army barracks, ready for anything! Friday night consisted of different groups ex¬ ploring the fort and friends walking along the beach. People were busy getting to know each other better. Mr. Brendel gave us our church service on Sabbath, which was a real blessing to everyone. His talks on relationships were humorous, but he really got the point across. That afternoon, the sun was shining brightly when everyone started off to the fort once more. A giant chain of seniors, arms interlocked, groped around in the dark tunnels looking for places to explore, while others just kicked back on the lawn to soak up the rays. Later that evening, we all gathered around a huge bonfire near the beach. While everyone huddled close together to keep warm, a few stories were told by Mr. Priest and various stu¬ dents. Eric Risby’s story about the pink and pur¬ ple gorilla was definitely a favorite. Marshmal¬ lows were roasted and smores gobbled by the pound—the perfect way to end a perfect day. Sunday found everyone at the fort one last time for a group picture. It was a restless bunch of seniors who crowded around the tower. Somewhere out there is a park ranger who will never forget Auburn Adventist Academy! J Senior Retreat Recognition at hast A stepping-stone to graduation. Just one way to remind the Seniors’ that already they were halfway there. A A We waited a long time for this . . . A Senior class president, Terry Fritz. The program went off without a hitch while everyone seemed to enjoy the guest speaker, Pastor Ash’s talk. He not only gave us a great talk, but he was close to us in a special way; he is the father of one of our seniors. This by itself, makes him unique. Then there was Mr. Koehn, going through the years when we thought we were big stuff, yet all the time knowing there was one more class ahead of us. Some sat up there looking back, and some sat up there looking ahead to the future, but all were wondering to themselves, I wonder what the REAL thing is going to be like?” M A Your integrity shapes your desti¬ ny”, was the topic of Pastor Ash’s speech. The Senior Quartet, Eric Risby, George Pleitez, Ward Sparacio and Andrew McPherson, lifts our hearts with inspirational music. A A Tm almost there,” thinks Evelyn Carvalho. The first Sabbath was spent on campus—in the chapel and gym—but by the next weekend, the weather had cleared and we were able to go to Sunset Lake for hikes and supper. After an afternoon of relaxing by the lake, hiking vigorously on the mountain trails, renewing old friendships or making new ones, we all gathered back at the lake for an inspiring sundown worship with a much closer feeling of family”. AYA—Adventist Youth in Action. The name really explains the purpose of the club. The main goal of the group is to share Christ’s love through their own personal lives. The group often gives skits, Sabbath school programs, visits in nursing homes, other churches, and give a lot of assistance to the Sunset Lake activities. The AYA generates an active prayer chain. Whenever they get a request, it passes through the links very quickly. Certainly, no one can deny the power of prayer! A. Pastor Nelson joins in on the discussion. M Working out the details . . . A Ideas are often plentiful. Adventist Youth in Action 25 A Week-of-Prayer speakers with Elder McLean, advisor. ► Working Out Our Own Salvation” was the title of David Springer’s talk. ( A Special music given by Eric Risby, Ward Sparacio, and Andrew McPherson. ► Things just got a little too hot for some when the wires in a light shorted out during one of the talks. Week-of-Prayer has come and gone, but not without leaving behind an important message and an even more important impres¬ sion on the students. The talks went well until Tuesday morning when Shelly Nyseth was interrupted by the fire alarm. The ceiling in the chapel had caught fire when some wires shorted out. Friday night, Andrew McPherson gave an excellent talk followed by an alter call. More than 99 % of the people present went forward to give their lives to Jesus or to just recommit themselves. A. Looking poised and confident, Susan Haworth gives her talk on The Patience of God . Student Week-of-Prayer ► Elder McLean’s Sabbath School class. ▼ Charissa Clough gives special music. Worship services—what sets our school apart from the rest. It makes us unique in the fact that we are a church sponsored school. We have several different worship services. One of them is every night at 7:30. This is just to wind up the day and prepare us for study hall. The dean’s have also found it’s a very good time for them to make their announcements. On Friday nights you’ll find us over at the church for Vespers. Usually during this worship service we have a guest speaker or even faculty give a talk. It’s just a relaxing way to begin the Sabbath each week. Worship Services A Pastor Nelson baptizing Shelly Lambuth. ► The man behing the scenes, Rich Tyler runs the PA system. Then there’s church where Pastor Nelson, new as of this year, gives an interesting sermon which most people seem to enjoy. The best part though, comes at the end. The time when Pastor Nelson sings a song written by himself and plays the piano along with it. M Giving Scripture, Jay Lyman helps out with the weekend services. ▼ Leading out in song service are Trisha Jaramio, Cynthia Armstrong and Julie Sanders. Last but not least, after church—around 3:30 or 4:00 in the after- noon-we have MV in the Dower Chapel. Nobody’s really sure why we have it, but it does break the monotony of the afternoon. During this time we usually have a film although this year they’ve been a little more creative by inviting guest speakers and having different activities where the students actually get involved. All in all, the worship services have contributed to Auburn Ad¬ v entist Academy and helped to make the students who they are and who they will be in the future. A A The academy Pastor, Greg Nelson, delivers another inspirational sermon. A Doing what quiet time” was meant for, Todd LePique, David Jordan, Nick Nordby, and Eric Risby study the Bible. A A ► Contributing to Afterglow, Paula Dietrich, Lori Hanson and Heidi Gildersleeve lead song service. ► A Every Sabbath, rain or shine, Mrs. Miller, our dedicated organist is there with her music. ► Both kids and adults enjoy listening to Pastor Nelsons Children’s Story”. Worship Services 1 The Southland I Remember” was the title of the first banquet of the year. Sponsored by the Zetta Kappa Girl’s Club, the banquet was a distinguished way to start out the fall season ahead. Entertainment consisted of several vocal pieces by the students. Guest entertainer, Danelle Weber, also contributed to the good ol’ southern feelin” by performing several down south” numbers. Much time was devoted to the decorating of Rudolph Hall which transformed it into a trite southern swampland. The table’s centerpieces were made of old boards with sayings such as NO SWIMMIN’”, NO HUNTIN’”, and even NO KISSIN”’ scrawled across them in dripping white paint. The swamp itself was a real highlight in the decorating scene. Surrounded by cattails and snake- grass and a frog or two, a little fisherman was kept busy, waiting for the ' bite of the night’. Banquet pictures were taken on the porch of a small southern cottage which also served as the stage for performances. During our high school years, we are making friends we will keep forever. The experiences that we share with people here— good or bad—draw us all into a friendship bind that we will forever cherish. A true friend is someone that you are able to look to and say, I’m happy to have been able to share a portion of my life with you.” Friends have been defined as people who love, care for, and do not betray your trust; someone who is fun to be around, is easy to talk to (about anything!), and never lets you down. Every room was clean done with special care the guys were coming to open house and soon would be there. The minutes ticked by just ever so slow, then all of a sudden it was time to go! The gentlemen arrived, some early, some late, they strolled through the dorm each man with his date. Once they were seated, the program began with Nicole, Kim, and Mindy, a song they did sing. On December 5, 1986, news of the closing of Harris Pine Mills surprised the entire campus as well as our world-wide church. Harris Pine was founded by Clyde and Dette Harris in Milton, Oregon in 1913, making vegetable crates for truck farmers in the area. It was later expanded and moved to Pendleton in 1939. By 1951, Harris Pine Mills was among the nation’s largest producers of unfinished furniture. Providing student employment was the vision of the company founders, who gave all of the company stock to the General Conference Corporation in 1959- Among the 26 branch facilities in 15 states, 16 were on or near academy campuses and three near colleges. John Bender, manager of the Auburn plant, reports that 60 students worked part time at the local factory, earning money for tuition and related school expenses. By the beginning of second semester, however, over 90 % of the former Harris Pine workers had been placed in other jobs either on campus or in newly located openings in the local community. Harris Pine Mills have certainly made a great contribution to the finacial assistance of many young people who have attended our schools across the nation. Harris of Pendleton Our janitors are the people that make our school shine. They faithfully vacuum, and sweep the floors, wash the windows and mirrors, and carry out the garbage. Governor Booth Gardner was to be on campus to meet with WFIS (Washington Federation of Independent Schools) and give an address on Christian education and private schools such as ours. Although expected to arrive in the early afternoon, because of a delayed flight the governor appeared late to the social hour and banquet held in his honor at our Academy Cafeteria. The President, Social Vice and spiritual Vice Presidents of ASB, ZK and CL Clubs were invited to the buffet meal. Each had a chance to meet and chat with Gardener. The governor, along with the members of WFIS, proceeded to the chapel where they were joined by many Seniors to hear the address. Our Sylvan and two instrument solos entertained the governor and federation before his speech. We all felt greatly honored that our academy was included in the governor’s tour. He is strongly behind private education and it was a privilege to be able to represent not only our school, but many other private schools to him. New Students Governor Visits
