PANORAMA iP : !f pH Dear Fellow Students and Staff: You are about to look into the year in retrospect. We have tried to capture the moods, the actions, the events of this marvelous year in the history of our school and this whole world that we make for ourselves. There have been incredible mome nts, awesome acts, but through it all there has been the big picture. You have a vision of a future. Looking through the present, purposing to follow the Lord wherever He leads, the future is not in doubt. God Bless You, every one. It is a pleasure to present this volume to you. Sincerely, Rainier Vista Staff and Sponsors Lawson Dumbeck President SENIORS The years rolled on, or screamed by, or drifted along, or crept away, but it finally happened, we’re SENIORS! The members of this staff are always willing to counsel with a person about jobs, schoolwork, policies and much more. Many of them are involved in committees planning school rules, social events for the student body, seeing that the school maintenance is kept up and making long-range plans. Though these staff members are always busy with something, their office doors stand open to anyone needing assis¬ tance. You stare at the words on your paper, and one by one they begin to blur and run into other. As the teacher begins his daily lecture, the group of words that you couldn’t understand a few minutes ago, now starts to make sense. You work hard all through the semester-but none of that is recognized until you see that “A” stamped on your report card. You give a sigh of relief—and then realize that that was just the first semester—you still have one more to go! OH WELL, with a little effort, that battle too can be won. 56-BIBLE Walt Koehn-Freshman Bible, Ken Perman-Sophomore Bible, Orlin McLean-Senior Bible, Dave Allen-Junior Bible, Monty Knittel-Introduction to Bible, Dick Jewett-Campus Pastor. BIBLE-57 INDUSTRIAL ARTS Do you want to add some interest to your life at A.A.A.? Take an I.A. class. With the help of Mr. Spady, Mr. Farver, or Mr. Freitas, you can learn to do incredible things with your hands. You can test your ability to build things in wood shop, or if you have nimble fingers try macrame in arts and crafts. From Mr. Farver you can learn to take an old clunker car and make it run like a new one. If you have an interest in welding or machine shop Mr. Spady will be eager to teach those skills. Amaze your friends with your skill and talent. Bob Farver - Auto Mech I II, Drivers Ed Ed Spady - Machine Shop, Welding, Math Bob Freitas - Wood Shop I II, Arts and Crafts, Photography I II 58-INDUSTRIAL ARTS INDUSTRIAL ARTS-59 Learning about our mother tongue can be a real trial. We wonder who needs to know about participles and preposi¬ tions? Mrs. Beitzel can make authors come alive and Mr. Krenz gets all the nouns and verbs straight. Mrs. Rittenbach keeps us reading and writing too. With all the practice and their good example, our letters home and requests for interviews and letters typed to busi¬ ness will be in perfect English. Maybe we’ll even pass the class. Pam Beitzel-Junior English, RE Advisor; Gail Rittenbach- Junior English, Reading Lab; Hans Krenz-Freshman Eng¬ lish, Sophomore English. ENGLISH 60-ENGLISH SPANISH Taking a foreign language gives stu¬ dents a chance to learn more about their own language. It gives them the ability to communicate with someone who speaks a different language and to learn to understand people of other places. HASTA MANANA! SPANISH-61 Learning Resources Center The Learning Resources Center consists of hundreds of books, a variety of magazines, an Apple II computer, and 12 loyal and dedicated workers. Who is the Director of all this, you may ask? Keith Drieberg is! He is always willing to take the time to help students find books, and magazines, or to teach them how to run the computer. All in all the LRC is a perfect place to go when you have home work, tests to study for, or just to fool around on the computer. Keith Drieberg - LRC Director, RV Sponsor 62-LRC AVIATION A new plane and instructor have gotten the aviation program off the ground this year. Dale Sinnott has been able to help students at times which fit their schedules. This has greatly reduced the time spent in groundschool and flight training. Now students can take off solo in the new Cessna 172 after only a few months. MATH AND SCIENCE Through labs, lectures, and audio-visual presentations stu¬ dents develop an understanding of the world of living things and the physicial universe. Practicing scientific methods they attempt to comprehend truth. Math is said to be not only logical, but FUNdamental. Some students are still trying to prove that equation. Those sermons uplifted our thoughts and helped us to make realistic changes in our lives. He also mingled with the stu¬ dents, playing his guitar and singing with us during after¬ glow services. 90-FALL WEEK OF PRAYER STUDENT WEEK OF PRAYER Student Week of Prayer is often considered the best series of meetings of the school year. This year is no exception. Student speakers, selected by their peers, shared Bible stories of a few who came to know Christ personally and gave their testimonies. Response was good with many students dedicating or rededicat¬ ing their lives to Christ. Week of Prayer speakers pictured at left are: Roger Jackson, Don Myers, Lance Taggart, Scott Burks, Voni Burden, Velona Smith, Lisa Knight, Anita O’Day, Lawson Dumbeck, and Ke¬ vin Krueger. Not shown: Lisa Walker and Rex Thornton. STUDENT WEEK OF PRAYER-91 BIBLE AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Camp Mivoden hosted the Bible and Leadership conferences this year. Elder Hancock from the White Estate presented a series showing the integrity and personality of Ellen White. Those who went will long remember the Friday night commu¬ nion and the friends thev made. CAROLING “Silent Night” was the song we brought to many homes in the West Seattle, Renton, and Mercer Island areas. The return for our effort was dollars that went to help many mission projects. Back at the cafeteria, after the evening of Caroling had come to a close, it wasn’t so silent as the students voiced varying comments on having soup and crackers in¬ stead of hot chocolate and cookies that had been served in previous years. Because so many students participated in Caroling, we received an extra day on a home leave in second semester. CAROLING-93 OUTREACH Outreach is a program that gives students a chance to use their God-given talents to help the community. These students participated in a stop-smoking clinic, to help some of the com¬ munity to “Kick the Habit”. They also handed out brochures for evangelistic meetings, and Childrens’ Crusades. Visiting the senior citi¬ zens, and cheering them up, is another way that Outreach has shared their faith. Sharing their faith in these ways has made some of the students feel closer to God, and has made them feel happier, all around. 94-OUTREACH W FtTTTTTT OUTREACH-95 AFTERGLOW Picture in your mind . . . After vespers on a Friday night. You gather with friends in the Fireside room where the Fire in the fireplace throws out a warm glow of welcome. Singing songs and sharing fill the brief half-hour you have together. Each student shares something that he has done this week, a habit overcome or an answer to prayer that has special meaning to him. A brief few minutes before time to go, you break up into groups of two or three for a special time of prayer. Everyone stands in a circle when they’re finished, holding hands. Then someone starts singing “Side By Side”. As you break up to go back to the dorms, you feel refreshed from the past week and ready to enjoy the weekend. 96-AFTERGLOW ALMOST ANYTHING GOES The gym was a riot of sound and mo¬ tion as students enjoyed an evening of fun and games. Many utilized skill that they never realized they had be¬ fore! 98-ALMOST ANYTHING GOES FACULTY TALENT Faculty Talent night is a time when the faculty can throw away their high society exterior and have fun showing their talent in drama, music, and comedy. It’s a time when the students can find out what their teachers are really like and the school is drawn together in friendship. FACULTY TALENT-99 FATHER-DAUGHTER BANQUET This is the one day out of the year that is espe¬ cially set aside for the Daddys and their little girls. The banquet is scheduled to start around 10:30—but somehow fathers always seem to ar¬ rive at 9:00. This year’s banquet was very unique because there wasn’t any electricity during most of the program. A buffet styled dinner was served by candlelight at Andy’s Auburn Station, and the program in the chapel was seen mostly by emer¬ gency lights. This is one day most girls will never forget—they were Daddy’s “little girl” once again. 100-FATHER-DAUGHTER BANQUET FALL FESTIVAL The Fall Festival was an evening full of fun and games as students participated in golfing, eating, the obstacle course, and throwing pies at the faculty. By the way, has anyone heard if Perman and Knittel got out of jail? FALL FESTIVAL-101 OUTINGS Hiking mountain trails, resting by streams, and singing songs by a campfire are just some of the things we do on outings. Worship is a special time of the day. Somehow it all seems more appropriate sitting outside. We also can spend time with our friends and run off our “cooped-up campus” energy. 102-OUTINGS ICE SKATING The students had a chance to get off campus for a couple of hours, and try their hand at Ice Skating. There were quite a few great skaters, and then there were those who . . . weren’t so great. Those who tried to keep their legs from doing the splits, and those who had very “wobbly” ankle problems. Most students came away with a few extra bruises, but it’s an experience they will never forget! ICE SKATING-103 AMATEUR HOUR 104-AMATEUR HOUR The theme for the thirty-second annual Amateur Hour was “Casa Loma Goes Country”. The Emcees were graduates of Auburn; Stuart and Scott Bushnell. Judges picked three winning numbers consisting of: “Grandma’s Feather Bed”, Denise Erwin and Velona Smith; “Fiddler on the Roof’, Gretchen Paul- man, Delvina Pierce, and Darla Brown; and “The Zoo Song” by Valora Cooley, Lisa Whalin, Lisa Knutson, Candy Knutson, and Heidi Knutson. In addi¬ tion to these the audience selected their favorite, “Three Wheels On My Wag¬ on”. AMATEUR HOUR-105 ZETA KAPPA OPEN HOUSE 106-ZETA KAPPA OPEN HOUSE CHRISTMAS BANQUET The Christmas banquet this year was put on by the ASB, ZK and CL clubs. The cafeteria was transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights, a colorful Christmas tree, and a snow backdrop was perfect for get¬ ting your picture taken with your date. Having a Christmas banquet adds to the spirit of the season. CHRISTMAS BANQUET-107 SNOW Last year it seemed to snow everywhere but here. This year was a different story. Our campus turned into a winter wonderland for almost a week. Snowball fights and snowmen burst up on center campus while anxious skiers checked their equipment to make sure it was in good condition after resting all last season. 108-SNOW FOOTBALL “Stick’em” is thought to be the secret of the faculties phenomenal winning season. How else could they lose on only one game and whomp on the students? Dropped passes became a thing of the past when the faculty used their magic formula. The students held out well in spite of the faculty’s advan¬ tage. It helps develop hand and eye cordination. Be¬ sides, volleyball is just plain fun! 112-VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL-113 BASKETBALL Because basketball is such a com¬ petitive sport, team members learn sportsmanship as well as team work in playing it. Of all the sports on campus, basketball seems to at¬ tract the most vigorous fans. Vil¬ lage as well as dorm students enjoy participating vocally if not phys¬ ically, in supporting their favorite team. At press time, the statistics were not available, but the caliber of the teams is evident in the fact that they won the All-Star game against the WWC freshmen!! SWIM MEET Seniors! 143 Juniors 90 Sophomores 28 Freshmen 26 116-SWIM MEET SWIM MEET-117 i F t ♦ A SKIING Last year there was no snow. This year it was wet, but it didn’t seem to bother the students and faculty that went to Sno- qualmie Summit every Sunday to ski. For some it was the beginning of a new thrilling adventure, and for others it was ten weeks of pure ecstasy and bliss! The ski program gives students a rare chance to earn academic credit while having fun. 118-SKIING IS: HARRIS PINE MILLS The whir of the saw, the smell of varnish and dust, are all just the beginning of a product soon to be constructed and sold. Tired muscles, and cash from the Business office, are some of the rewards the employees reap. Having learned to work hard and hold a steady job, the students have learned responsibility, which will help in future employment. 120-HARRIS PINE MILLS CAFETERIA The cafeteria is a familiar place on campus. Most students know it as the place to eat meals and, even if not hungry, to socialize. An important workplace on campus, the cafe gives work to 63 students. Buffet service provides a good variety of choices and a chance to select type and amount of food we wish. From salads to sociability, from entrees to employment, the cafeteria is a crucial campus center. Rosemary Farver-Food Service Director Gladys Langseth-Associate Food Service Director Wilma Mundy-Associate Food Service Director CAFETERIA-121 CAMPUS CARETAKERS Have you ever wondered who keeps our campus neat and tidy? Mr. Mundy’s grounds crew is up at the break of day mowing lawns and pulling weeds. Mrs. Ahl- berg’s janitors keep the halls and dorms clean and pol¬ ished. And Mr. Ahlberg’s bunch takes care of mainte¬ nance. Thanks to these people our campus is kept ship¬ shape. 122-CAMPUS CARETAKERS CAMPUS CARETAKERS-123 READERS SECRETARIES Being a reader or secretary may seem like an easy job, but really it is a big responsibility. They do menial tasks such as sweeping floors, and emptying garbage, but these are nothing compared to their real responsibility of keeping the teachers in line and to class on time. The teachers are usually appreciative of the work done by the readers, be¬ cause it saves them time. 124-READERS SECRETARIES GREENHOUSE The chief product of AAA’s Greenhouse is hydroponic lettuce, grown under artifi¬ cial light and in nutrient so¬ lution. A crop matures under the watchful eyes of the growers and student employ¬ ees. Students provided with meaningful work know the vital need of being careful. They know real satisfaction in seeing many cases of their product being trucked to Northwest grocers. Mr. James Riner-Greenhouse owner. ROSTER Doug Acosta 11933 SE 169th PI.
