The Bible personalities come alive as real people who had real problems much like ours. In Junior Bible with Elder Allen and Senior Bible with Elder McLean, the doctrines and truths of the Word and Spirit of Prophecy become personal guidelines, sources of Truth and patterns for growing in Christ. Ask, believe, claim, and learn to be Christlike in a less-than-Christian world. hiin m ii m iicew fisc? mi MS! Step IS T3 Tins! M3 IkUKKC W 1333! mi i i n 12 - BIBLE I BIBLE - 13 ART Clay, oils, chalk, endless new beginnings are the story of our artistic development. Under Mr. Child ' s guidance, these media become tools of creativity. What a challenge to take an idea from one ' s mind and translate it with the hands to a picture or sculpture! Let your imagination go free, then find a way in the art department to express its ideas. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Take a clunker of an auto and make it run. Mr. Farver will take you through the steps in Auto Mech classes. Once you get it running, he ' ll teach you to drive it during Driver Ed class (and get an ulcer from your strange left turns into traffic)! Need to get some metal shaped or welded? Mr. Spady can show you how in Metal Shop. His patience is well known, but don ' t try to do poor work. You will have the privilege of doing it over until you develop the skill you need for future usefulness. Where do the builders and woodworkers get their skill? They probably practiced in Mr. Freitas ' Woodworking classes. Shelves, cupboards, skateboard ramps, water skis, whatever is made of wood can be fashioned in the Shop. And then next door, nimble fingers tie the knots of macrame, tool leather, and polish ceramic pieces ready for their glazes. Manual dexterity comes to its greatest test as steady hands produce useful items for the home. INDUSTRIAL ARTS - 15 16 - INDUSTRIAL ARTS INDUSTRIAL ARTS - 17 ENGLISH When you ' ve spoken it all your life, English seems easy. Then comes the process of vocabulary growth, correcting usage and spelling, and learning about the development of communication of thought through literature. Mr. Krenz ' Freshmen and Sophomores improve their English. Then as Juniors in Mrs. Beitzel ' s class more skills are put to use. English IV under Mrs. Crays ' direction can even lead to some College credit. Hopefully the nouns, verbs, and adjectives are more properly used than before you came to English classes. 18 - ENGLISH SPANISH With Mrs. Andrews ' guidance, a second language can be started. Mastery will take more time and experience, but a good start is crucial. In conversation, reading, writing, we try to become fluent in the speaking and acquainted with the culture of the countries where the language is spoken. SPANISH - 19 Future homemakers, future chefs, the nutritionists of the nation—these and more are the products of Miss Ehman ' s classes. In spite of burned food, dirty dishes, or crooked seams, she can get us to try again. Skills acquired here can be carried with us into the practice of real life in the years ahead. Miss Ehman, can you recommend a good cook? I really like to eat! 20 - HOME ECONOMICS HOME ECONOMICS - 21 HISTORY Mr. Miller makes history come alive right there in Room 13. Mock battles, confrontations, events of destiny—you know how it was when you watch him. Maybe we can learn from the past and avoid some errors. Elder Perman helps us to know this State and its history. Traveling to the historical sites is the best way, even if the bus refuses to go past Astoria for awhile. 22 - HISTORY AVIATION Navigation and other skills are mastered in Ground School, and then Mr. Wines or Mr. Latsha can take you off the ground. Learning how to keep the wings level and keeping the nose up seem hard at first. Soon you can take it up and bring it down by yourself—solo is a magic word. It ' s hard on shirts, but nice to achieve. Now if the FAA will just agree with the answers on your test . . . AVIATION - 23 BUSINESS EDUCATION Job-finding skills are polished in Mr. Willison ' s typing classes. And even if you don ' t get a job that uses typing, term papers and letters home will be more legible. Mr. Wines shows you how accounting practices work and you valiantly try to get the figures all in the right columns. Mrs. Andrews ' help with the mechanics of business machines and other office practice rounds out the skills. The new language of shorthand becomes clearer as your speed picks up and dictation goes faster. But will you ever get the transcription just right? Practice! 24 - BUSINESS EDUCATION LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER A great part of education is knowing where to find facts. Mrs. Crays and Mrs. Jewett can help with that. Or maybe you ' d just like to visit or study with a friend. If it requires conversation, you may find yourself invited to study elsewhere. Other people need it quiet. Films, construction paper, projectors, transparencies— these and many more things are available to help the teachers enrich their classes. LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER - 25 SCIENCE Computing or computers. Mr. Rittenbach helps us understand both. Skill and confidence grow as we can make use of machines to make our work easier and more accurate. Mr. Parker ' s help in Physics and Geometry get some tough concepts into our thinking. And then there ' s sailing and skiing to talk about! In biology classes we study living things in all aspects. Miss Toop emphasized that scientists are exact and we try to be more careful. But why must we spell it EXACTLY? In Chemistry, Mr. Rittenbach makes sure we put the right things together. It usually turns out just fine. What ' s a little smoke? 26 - SCIENCE AND MATH MATH - 27 CHOIR AND SYLVAN Adams, Marguerite Coy, Carmen Anderson, Davie Craig, JoAnne Anderson, Joni Dietrich, Tamra Aronson, Cheri Eigenberg, Judy Bahnmiller, Mike Everett, Ginger Barrett, Brenda Finch, Darwin Bauer, Tammi Finney, Cindy Baze, Kim Ford, Vanessa Beckwith, Paula Gasser, Larry Blake, Linda :;: Gohl, Brian Boos, Kathy Ham, Kevin Bottomley, Kathy Harris, Jim Burden, Voni Hayes, Julie Burke, Gerald Hilde, Jackie Bushnell, Stuart Hinshaw, Shane Candler, Judy Houck, Doug Casebier, Kevin Howell, Julie Cawthra, Terresa Hubbard, Lori Church, Bonnie Huether, Renee Cobb, Renee Jackson, Pierre Corwin, Shelly Jackson, Roger Couch, Randy Jewett, Dave Sylvan Johnson, Lorri Karlstrom, Ver-lee Roberts, Gregg Kegley, Marilyn Roberts, Linda Knight, Lisa Sanders, Harlan Kuehl, Lisa Schneider, Sylvia Lake, Marcee Schrenk, David Lamb, Russell Shinstine, Kelly Lang, Kristi Simmons, Tracy Latsha, Ron Sleeter, Julie Luce, Dan Sneed, Dawn Lyman, Laura : : Spady, Sharon McCombs, Jill Sule, David Meyer, Carol ::: Thornton, Rick Patchen, Genelle Tupper, Janice Paulman, Gretchen Wagner, Bev :;: Paulman, Katrina Wallace, Mike Peisley, Kelli White, LeAnn Pierce, Delvina Whitfield, Mike Postlewait, Debbie Whitten, Crystal Priest, Stephanie Wilson, Kelli Reid, Liz Worth, Georgianna Richardson, Sherri 28 - MUSIC Rehearsals, rehearsals, and more rehearsals result in a finished performance. During rehearsals, many things take place; singing happy birthday to a fellow member, keeping your back straight and feet flat on the floor, and of course one can ' t forget warm-ups (ya-ha-ha ' s etc.), and eventually working on real music. These vocal groups, under the direction of Miss Ritchie, pride themselves in excellent performances, which vary from a candle-lit Christmas vespers with a 17th century hymn, to the 30 ' s with George Gershwin. The choir consisting of 88 members, performs sacred concerts, while Sylvan, with 23 members performs both sacred and secular music. Mr. Priest and Miss McIntyre see to it that we don ' t sit around and get flabby. By example, and by consistent watchfulness, they promote good health. Sportsmanship and attention to good practice take top priority. The Gymnastics team takes the message of good health to churchs and schools, demonstrating the link between fitness and Christlike living. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - 33 34 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION NURSE’S ASSISTANT Future nurses follow Mrs. Allen ' s instructions and learn the procedures carefully. Who wants to be the patient today? The skills are perfected in actual practice in local hospitals and nursing homes. Careers in the making, or just summer jobs with a certificate—many applications of the learning done here are in our futures. NURSE ' S ASSISTANT - 35 1. Wines, Ed - Principal, Accounting 2. It has provided a chance to get off campus and take a break from studies, and most of all to be out in Nature with God. The officers are: President- Dietmar Grellman Vice-President- Joe Reid Sec.-Treas.- Dynell Weber WILDERNESS CLUB 90 - WILDERNESS CLUB NORTHWEST HISTORY TOUR Following a portion of the Lewis Clark Expedition, the Northwest History Tour was a big success. Those who went won ' t quickly forget those early morning cold showers, keeping their diaries up-to-date, and the time that they spent waiting for the bus to be repaired. And they won ' t forget all of the fun they had either. NORTHWEST TOUR - 91 WEEKS OF PRAYER The speaker for our first Week of Prayer was Elder Jaecks. His topics were interesting and very applicable to our everyday life. A very memorable candlelight communion service was held in the gym during mid-week. A real blessing was gained by the Student Week of Prayer speakers (shown at right). The listeners were also inspired by the carefully prepared talks. God spoke through each of the speakers as they delivered their sermons. Those sermons represented a lot of preparation time, much nervousness, and many sincere prayers. 92 - WEEKS OF PRAYER WEEKS OF PRAYER - 93 OUR NEW CHURCH 0 Lord, I love the habitation of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwells. Sweep me not away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, men in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes. But as for me, I walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me. My foot stands on level ground; in the great congregation I will bless the Lord. Psalms 26:8-12 The building of the Auburn Adventist Academy Church began at camp meeting time, with a ground-breaking ceremony led by the Washington Conference President, Elder Glenn Aufderhar. Since that time, much volunteer labor has gone into the construction of the church. Many Academy students, as well as Washington Conference pastors, lent a helping hand. A letter¬ writing campaign, conducted by the students, brought in additional funds. The goal for the completion of the sanctuary was set for the graduation ceremonies of 1980. 94 - NEW CHURCH BIBLE AND LEADERSHIP We have seen the ecstasy of a new morning sun on a lake of emeralds. We have found lasting friendships. We have felt the sacredness of His word and His presence here. We have found God. We have found love. We have found life. CONFERENCE ASB and Girls Club President, ASB and Spiritual Vice-Presidents and a number of other officers and students attended Bible and Leadership conference at beautiful Camp Mivoden. The weekend included interaction seminars, music, sports activities and just plain fun, including a new record for Bonnie Church of bowls of raisin bran eaten. OUTREACH The Outreach program, directed by Elder Allen, is a multi-faceted activity. Students of varying skills and interests find things they can do to share their faith. In Community Services, students volunteer to do chores such as chopping wood or repairing a roof for elderly people who can ' t manage for themselves. Religious Drama, also called Christian Reader ' s Theater, gives programs at area churches and church schools. They present dramatic sketches, thought-provoking in content. Some students make visits to the Cerebral Palsy ward at Rainier State School at Buckley. Others meet elderly people who are unable to get out to fellowship. The students of Auburn Adventist Academy try to share Christ ' s love with others and in doing so are able to learn more about Christ ' s love for themselves. 96 - OUTREACH SNOW ... SNOW - 97 NELSON HALL Home for the evening? What will you do? Visit someone down the hall, chat with the dean a while, get your shower, visit someone else down the hall, and then, if there ' s any time left, why not study for a few minutes? Nelson Hall may not be home, but for a few months it provides a unique challenge- dorm life. 98 - NELSON HALL NELSON HALL 99 100 - WITZEL HALL WITZEL HALL Noisy halls, cold showers, basketballs against your door, practical jokes-what do you expect in a place like Witzel Hall? It ' s not home and Mom ' s not there to do the laundry, but there ' s no scarcity of fellows to visit when studying gets too heavy. And there ' s always someone to call, if you can get on the phone list. Four years is about enough, but at its best dorm life provides a chance to grow up fast and make lifelong friends. WITZEL HALL 101 GONG SHOW SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Social activities gave students a break from routine of classes and work. New students shared their talents and returning students also planned Fall Festival and Amateur Hour to entertain their audience. With some fun on Saturday nights it was even possible to endure the weekly toil. 102 GONG SHOW The New Student Talent turned out to be an interesting experience. Some acts were serious and some not so serious. Participating students, cold sweat on their brows, displayed hidden talents and well-practiced skills. Appreciative returning students encouraged them to keep on practicing. Getting To Know You was sung by Miss Ritchie and Miss McIntyre, revealing another side of their personalities. Mr. Koehn, as M.C., tried, often in vain, to make the audience laugh. NEW STUDENT TALENT - 103 NEW STUDENT TALENT ZK OPEN HOUSE Those were the days! Nelson Hall may be an up-to-date place most days, but for one night it reflected American History. Costumes, decorations, and a special program continued the theme. Hours later Nelson Hall returned to normal and a new page in history had been written. 104 - ZK OPEN HOUSE Those who attended Fall Festival found themselves amidst death-defying leaps, archery contests, and repeated trips to the county Chicken Coop . Through the appropriate costumes, the theme, The Wild, Wild West was brilliantly portrayed. By participating in challenging activities, students had many chances to make new friends, and learn more about the different organizations on campus. 106 - FALL FESTIVAL FALL FESTIVAL - 107 WM AMATEUR HOUR Against a Seattle skyline, performers exhibit their varied talents. Judges awarded cash prizes of $25 each to the Blue-Grass Band, Senior quartet, and Marlene Weber. Sylvan, performing in uniform for the first time, presented the theme song, Seattle , and also entertained with selections from Porgy and Bess . Loren Dickinson, from Walla Walla College, regaled the audience with anecdotes of campus life. 108 - AMATEUR HOUR AMATEUR HOUR - 109 OUTINGS Hiking in the mountains (when it ' s raining), eating cafeteria vege-dogs, and congregating around the fire are all things that we like to do on our outings. Outings also give us a chance to relax with our friends, and get some much-needed (off campus!) exercise. In the outdoor setting the worship that we have together seems real and somehow especially appropriate. 110 - OUTINGS ICE SKATING Leaving campus behind for a couple of hours, over half the students invaded the Burien Ice Chalet. When they arrived, kids were swarming the place. Some were just learning, others skated gracefully on center ice. Yet others raced about trying to outskate each other. There were also a lot of interested bystanders who enjoyed the chills and spills. When it was time to leave, there were a lot of sore knees. Most skaters were worn out and just plain soaking wet. Greenhouse workers must carefully follow instructions and learn care procedures if that inventory is to be sold. Planting, watering, fertilizing, and then gently boxing the plant to go to the customer, one must know how to do it. This is more than a giant terrarium. An industry, employing several students, the Greenhouse is a witness to all who come and all who do business here. 124 - GREENHOUSE GROUNDS MAINTENANCE You get grimy, you get cold, if the pipe breaks you get a shower of icy water. You get paid, you get off early, you get the satisfaction of a job well done. The whole crew keeps the campus landscaping in good condition. They keep the garbage picked up, working against the weather when the wind blows. Burned out lights, leaky faucets, weeds, buses that won ' t run, call them the challenges of the crew. It sounds like WORK! CAFETERIA 126 - CAFETERIA Hundreds of salads a day, gallons of juice a meal, trays and trays of fruit and dishes and sack lunches. Cafeteria workers are accustomed to doing things in large quantities. They hear the sharp comments about the food (not like Mother makes!) and clean up after the salad dressing has been dripped all over. They may even join in the applause when someone does a tray¬ dropping routine for the day ' s crowd. Scrubbing the pots and pans from 750 meals a day gives you time to reflect on your future. With training like this you could apply for work in any restaurant in the USA. Meanwhile, shred another cabbage at good old AAA Cafeteria! CAFETERIA 127 When you get graded papers back or a letter from one of the faculty, you are usually seeing another student ' s work. They sweep floors, empty wastebaskets, answer phones, and often get a lot of static from students who come in to the office. Learning to be careful and accurate is part of it. Learning to meet the people pleasantly is the larger part: Many thankful bosses regard their readers and secretaries with genuine appreciation. READERS SECRETARIES - 129 HARRIS PINE MILLS You have to earn your tuition, you need a place to work quite a few hours. And you don ' t want to be limited to minimum wage for campus workers. One alternative is Harris Pine Mills on campus. You ' ll sweat, you ' ll get dirty, you ' ll have to breathe in some fumes some days. You ' ll learn skills that will stay with you throughout life, and you ' ll gain insight into your future as it relates to manual labor or assembly line skills, or working with wood. Regardless of the future, right now you ' ll learn to cooperate with the boss, to get along with the others in your department, and to be a good worker, punctual, accurate, and eager (for the quitting time!) You ' ll go and collect your percentage at the Business Office, and realize what Capitalism can do for its workers. Now, how to spend that cash! 130 - HARRIS PINE MILLS HARRIS PINE MILLS - 131 IN MEMORIAM Our Prayer Lord often the road seems dark and lonely and we cannot fully understand the purpose. Give us the strength and knowledge, Father, to know you ' re right there with us. Forgive us when we become too comfortable with life ' s pleasures and possessions, we oft forget our very existence is to mold our lives toward heaven. Give us the courage to face a loss as a step closer to the kingdom, and to realize our sorrow and tears could be only a fragment of the way you love him. Our Students Make Us Special. Socially aware. Intellectually alert. Spiritually committed. The Walla Walla College student. Consider the volunteer service record, tor example. Last year, WWC students donated more than 3,000 hours of assistance to social service agencies. On campus, students are actively involved in more than 25 special interest clubs, student government, academic enrichment programs and recreational events. Student representatives serve on nearly all ot the faculty committees. And while their involvement reaches into the heart of campus and community life, it doesn ' t stop there. Since the Student Missionary program began, 358 WWC students have donated a year of service to foreign missions. Each returns with valuable insights that help create a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere. It ' s this kind of grass-roots involvement that gives WWC students the opportunity to become leaders now, and in the future. It ' s this kind of involvement that makes them special. At WWC, we plan our entire program around the miraculous potential of man working with God. Here, leaders are born — and bom again.
