Many students spent Sabbath afternoons this year participating in community services. Working through the Senior Service Center, they patched roofs, cleaned house, and did whatever else needed to be done for Senior Citizens and disabled people. Others joined the Big brother, Big Sister program, and spent their time reading Bible stories, playing games, and just talking with community children who needed an older brother or sister. Another student group went to Rainier State School in Buckley, where they visited the mentally retarded and cerebral palsy wards. Volunteers at Mary Bridge Children ' s Hospital in Tacoma cheered apprehensive surgical patients and lonely children and also helped care for babies. ACT Teams were active this year, presenting music and personal witness in Adventist churches throughout the Washington Conference. All of these Outreach programs proved to be worthwile. While those who were visited received aid, the students also appreciated the chance to spend the Sabbath hours constructively—learning to give of themselves and their time to others. 16
