REGISTRATION 13 REGISTRATION Breaking all previous records 563 students registered on September three and four for the 1973-74 school year. Mr. Priest wearily readjusts Alec Gingery ' s complex class schedule for the umpteenth time as Brian and Butch St. Clair offer (helpful?) assistance. Doug Kline pauses at the second station to receive Elder Jorgensen ' s signature and hearty handshake of welcome. 14 FALL FESTIVAL FALL FESTIVAL ASAAA. Oct. 21. International theme. Flags. Balloons. Pastor Ball performs in front of the winning Sophomore booth African Jungle. CHEMISTRY 17 HOW TO REACT TO CHEMISTRY IN 3 EASY LESSONS by Faila Course Lesson One: Don ' t panic. The instructions, notes, books, chemicals, and test tubes may come quick and thick, but panic just makes it worse. After absorbing fast instructions on possible explosive reactions, start from the top and do it all step by step, drop by drop. After the Fire Department has left and you have finished filling out the insurance forms, pick a different experiment for lab. Lesson Two: Your second experiment. Now in the new laboratory you ' re taking on a new assignment, which, the teacher emphasizes, is guaranteed non-explosive. Oh, this one sounds perfect. All there is to do is pour some carefully measured chemicals into test tubes and —OOPS!— spilled some of it. Too late to finish it now; class is over. You wipe your hand across your forehead with a sigh of relief. The next morning you wake up to find an extremely unusual complexion problem; your forehead is entirely black, with streaks of the same blotched over your nose and cheeks. You note the same problem on your hands, only worse. Silver Nitrate—AgN03—may not be explosive, but it takes a while to wear off. Lesson Three: How to get an A . This, through my squinting eyes, has never been envisioned. 18 SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES Being a Christian school, A.A.A. provides many and varied spiritual programs for the students. After the Friday night vespers, a voluntary Afterglow” is conducted. This includes singing, testimonies and prayer bands. A separation of the sheep from the goats according to Pastor Oliver. At some church services, we have the joy of witnessing an addition to our ever growing family, through baptism. Sabbath afternoon has a potpourri of different activities. We have the choice of going on a hike (if one is organized), or singing bands, or a small faculty-sponsored cjiscussion group, or you may attend M.V. services. However, if dorm, we do not have the choice of choosing nothing. Three times during the year a Week of Spiritual Emphasis is provided for the students. The Friday night meeting of Week of Prayer is traditionally a Communion service, attended by choice. Although organized spiritual activities are provided, many students have individual ones. A few students might get together to study specific E. G. White books, or a book of the Bible. Also small nightly prayer groups are formed, and numerous private devotions. Though most activities of a spiritual nature are obvious, there are many that don ' t meet the eye. A student studying diligently for history class (or any other) is participating in a spiritual activity. The jogger doing his daily mile is helping his religious experience. For when we improve one side of our triangle (a triangle with sides physical, mental, and spiritual) it strengthens yet another side. All activities here at A.A.A., if used properly, can enhance one ' s spiritual growth. Dori Pipers is baptized in the swimming pool by Pastor Oliver, who commented, We generously loan our baptistry to the P.E. Department during the week.” John Brunt, Freshman Bible teacher at Walla Walla College, was the featured speaker of our Fall Week of Spiritual Emphasis. Far left. The Heritage Singers U.S.A. give their testimony through song in a special chapel service. 20 BIBLE CONFERENCE BIBLE CONFERENCE 21 BIBLE CONFERENCE Fall Bible Conference was held at Sunset Lake Youth Camp on October five and six. Over 65 students enjoyed the camp ' s drippy environment while studying such topics as justification by faith, forgiveness, and restitution. HARRIS PINE MILLS In a normal work day at Harris Pine Mills—a private corporation employing many students—(left to right) (1) Lumber is transported to the lumber yard where (2) it is stacked, ready to be seasoned in the dry kiln. (3) After the drying process is completed, the lumber is sorted, here by Wayne Libby, and then cut to designated sizes. (4) Going through the mill room, the boards are cut into specific shapes, such as the headboards for beds, being done by Don Larsen. (5) Somehow all these different pieces converge at one point — the assembly room—where Don Watts and Mike Barnett put together a desk. Other pieces of furniture assembled here include dressers, desks, chairs, tables, hutches, and cabinets. (6) Next in line is check sanding, an area where sandpaper and wood putty are prevalent. Here Myrna Hayes smoothes the top of a desk, one of her numerous tasks. (7) When the furniture gets through check-sanding, it is shoved into the stain room where it is stained by dipping or spraying, demonstrated here by Dan Anderson. After the stain is dry it is sealed, lacquered, and taken to another dry room where it waits 1 5-20 hours before being packed for shipping. (8) Sherrie Enright breaks in a finished desk from Harris Pine Mills. 24 WORK WORK Here at AAA, a well rounded program, including work as well as study, is considered standard curriculum. Every student is given the opportunity to enhance his character while diminishing his bill by working one to four hours daily. Available to the on-campus worker are a great variety of jobs. If office work appeals to you, you could be a reader for a teacher. The business office and registrar ' s office also provide experience for many Girl Fridays. Janitoring, monitoring, weeding, mowing, painting, digging, filing, sorting, cleaning, etc. are also available to the eager and the able. Mr. Holderbaum explains to Harris Pine Mills worker. Sue Brown, why the molder machine isn ' t cutting out furniture pieces properly. Joan Thornton cleans the cafeteria decks after lunch. 26 FOOTBALL FOOTBALL Lauren Meharry keeps a record of scores, completions and first downs. Marty Goodridge fixes his gaze on the flapping flag of Rich Spady. Halfbacks, Brian St. Clair and Chuck Detwiler, protect their quarterback, Jim Chaney, from the opposing team. 27 28 FLYING FLYING Students get down-to-earth practice the flight simulator. Future pilots polish their aviation techniques in the school ' s Cessna 1 50. 30 CAFETERIA Lars Justinen Lori Knutson, lower right Sylvia Green CAFETERIA 31 CAFETERIA 32 SWIMMING SWIMMING Since its appearance on campus in 1971 the Academy ' s 25-yard long pool has added new dimension and flexibility to the physical education program. Over the past two years classes in swimming, diving, scuba, water safety instruction, lifesaving, and water polo have been added to the curriculum. Many students and faculty have benefited from the fun and exercise of year-round swimming. Ron Mills demonstrates a graceful swan dive. Racing against the stopwatch develops speed and endurance. 4 . rarI SWIMMING 33 Sue Foley splashes toward the finish line. Offered for the first time, synchronized swimming creates a sense of timing and co-ordination. 34 ZK, CL OFFICERS. 1 ST SEMESTER CASA LOMA (BOYS’ CLUB) ZETA KAPPA (GIRLS’ CLUB) OFFICERS 1. Some poachers in the crowd made their catch before Open Season, thus making odds worse for the licensed hunters. At 5:30 p.m., December 2, the young men called for their triumphant dates at Ruby Nelson Hall. Couples, organized into groups of 20, followed guides to the cafeteria and dormitories, recapturing high-points of America ' s history from the Age of Discovery to The Depression . At last! The moment all young men long for! To see the inside of the girls ' dorms, (and legally, too!?). Following dinner, students from Walla Walla College provided the entertainment.
