That you may view again the actors on the stage of this colorful pageant of life at Auburn Academy your staff presents the Rainier Vista for 1962. 2 1962 Rainier Vista VOLUME XXXII PRESENTED BY ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF AUBURN ACADEMY AUBURN, WASHINGTON EDITOR: FLORENCE TEO BUSINESS MANAGER: JANNICE RASMUSSEN 3 Filled almost beyond capacity, South Hall echoes to happy laughter and surpressed giggles as a home for all the girls. In these rooms the upper classmen make their home a delightful place to study and rest. Lower classmen have enjoyed Manous as a school home but it will give way to the modern buildings now under construction. STEPPINGSTONES Science, the Arts and History, Bookkeeping, Language, Chemistry, Home Ec, and Math, and Biology -— There they all are for you and me. On the rugged Path of Learning, — Steppingstones! Classes and clubs, games old and new, Banquets and concerts, friendships, too. Working and playing the whole year through — All these can make us strong and true. On the way to Abundant Living, — Steppingstones! Study of Truth like an opening flower, Faith that becomes a mighty tower. Prayer and praise, the Vesper Hour — These form a life of Hope and Power. On the road to God’s Tomorrow, — Steppingstones! Vernon E. Berry I OUR STEPPINGSTONES Tn CTtPVTru Apr . X dXSXv V lv c xjLXvXI • D E D I C A T I O N The ancient knight was known for his valor, fidelity, strength, and loyalty. Our modern Crusader has shown that he possesses these same qualities. In his classes of science and mathematics, in various organizations, and in other fields he has shown these qualities. His energy, purpose, and en¬ thusiasm have contributed much to the success of our school. To you, Mr. Reed, our modern Crusader, symbolizing the best to be found in educational leadership, we dedicate this 1962 Rainier Vista. 9 “The Greatest want of the world is the want of men — men who will not he bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do fear to call sin by its right name, men whose con¬ science is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fallr Ed. p. 57. How great this need is today! How the world needs honest and true men who will stand for the right “come what may”! Students, God needs such men and women. He is looking for young people who will faithfully serve L. E. McClain, Principal Him in the finishing of His work on earth. The task is one that requires inner fortitude and the ability to stand for principle regardless of what the rest of the world may think or do. As you leave Auburn Academy, you will be looked upon as representatives of this school and your God. It is my hope that each one of you will accept the task that God gives you, and that you will be true and faithful to the Christian principles that you have learned here at Auburn Academy. ef$Jn CL 10 BOARD OF TRUSTEES BACK ROW: H. RONALD REED, Math MR. WILLIAM COLEMAN, Science Algebraic, geometric, chemical or physical — problems are nothing to two good scientific minds. But even the experts have questions. “Why all the gadgets and contraptions in your trunk, Mr. Coleman?” MRS. BESSIE SOULE, Home Economics MRS. LEONA ALTMILLER, Secretarial Science MR. They teach the rudiments of our mother tongue, the classics of the ages, and the romance languages of Spanish and French. 13 ELDER C. L. WITZEL, Church Pastor ELDER EDWIN READING, Bible In¬ structor Religion dull and uninteresting? Not when the scenes of the Bible are brought to life by men who have been there and can describe firsthand the background and setting for the many stories and parables. MR. DOROTHY WEBER, Choral Direc¬ tor Patience, kindness and the inspiration of personal achievement keep the stu¬ dents striving to attain to the goal set for them by our accomplished music staff. MR. A great spiritual revival was experienced by all under the Spirit-filled, youth messages by Elder E. L. Min- chin, our associate world youth leader from Wash¬ ington, D.C., and the dynamic preaching by Elders D. A. Delafield, H. A. S. Richards, Harold Richards, Jr., and others. Other features of the congress which we especially enjoyed were the seven youth discussion groups meet¬ ing twice daily, the “Spotlight on Truth” Bible teams and the temperance orations on Thursday night by the three academy finalists. It was also a thrill to hear Rafer Johnson, the world’s greatest living athlete, and to meet Anna Stahl, our pioneer missionary to the Amazon. Our choir joined with nine other choirs from the academies and College in some of the most beautiful singing we have ever heard. For all of us, the youth congress brought a new sense of direction and a firmer commitment to our privilege of realizing personally the congress theme: “IN THINE HAND ... TO MAKE GREAT.” 51 Singing Bands 52 Soprano Mrs. Weber, Director Bass Alto Tenor i Sylvan Chorus SENIOR TRIO SOPHOMORE TRIO Shari Rowland Nona Lyman Donna Buck Bobbie Bliss Estelle Fletcher Juanita Newman 54 MALE QUARTET Bernie Neil Cyril Monks Jan Maddox Ken Veal Chorus 55 BACK ROW: Paul Martin. Without the aid of stu¬ dents, the sponsors, the businessmen and the photographers this 1962 RAINIER VISTA would not have been possible. I want to thank each and every one of the annual staff members for all the late hours and hard work; the sponsors who have stood behind us in all our endeavors; you fellow students and faculty members who have been prompt and patient in getting your pictures taken; the club officers and their sponsors: these helped make this yearbook possible. But most of all, I wish to thank the businessmen who see that in advertising in an academy publication they are reaching their future customers. Thank you —- thank you everyone for you invaluable co-operation. May this be but the beginning steps in our “Steppingstones to Service.” 108
