WHITE PRO DEDICATION To a man of many talents; whose versatile abilities have aided him in jobs no one else wanted. To a man who quietly lives before us, never complaining, showing patience, loyalty, sportsmanship, and general friendliness. To one who has helped with the building of Christ-like characters for this life and the life to come. To you, Mr. Spady, with hearts full of deep admiration and warm affection, we dedicate the 1961 RAINIER VISTA and add your name to the list of wonderful people, chosen throughout the years, to occupy this treasured page. 10 FACULTY ELDER L. E. McCLAIN, PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Students: Another school year comes to a close. This Rainier Vista will keep alive in your memories the happenings of the year. It will recall memories of happiness, friend¬ ship, achievement, success, and failure. It is my desire that you may not only re¬ remember these lessons of Christian liv- but may you long remember the spiritual lessons your teachers have endeavored to teach you. My hope is that you not only remember these lessons of Christian liv¬ ing, but that you apply them to your daily life. May the memories of this school year at Auburn Academy stir us to a renewed determination to live the life that will fit us for life eternal. L. E. McCLAIN, PRINCIPAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES MR. JOE DAY; MR. WILLIS CAMPBELL; ELDER F. E. FROOM; ELDER CHAIRMAN; DR. ROBERT YOUNG; ELDER E. K. MOOERS; MR. E. C. R. AIMES; ELDER J. C. KOZEL; MR. EDGAR ORTNER; ELDER J. C. CHRISTIE; ELDER GEORGE RASMUSSEN; ELDER ED H. WEBB; T. PORTER; ELDER L. E. McCLAIN, SECRETARY; ELDER N. R. DOWER, ELDER DUANE ANDERSON; ELDER M. J. PERRY. 12 MR. EDGAR W. ORTNER, Treasurer MR. DONALD CANTRELL, Registrar The vital statistics involved in our school program are in the capable hands of these men. No absence goes unrecorded or store charge unnoticed. When prob¬ lems arise with grades or finances these men are always ready to give needed counsel and assistance. MISS DORIS ROBERTSON, Dean of Girls MRS. HELEN SIMMONS, Assistant Sharing the joys and sorrows, success and failures, of 130 girls is the work of the South Hall deans. Reward for the long hours spent comes in seeing the girls build characters that will stand in the mighty conflict of life. MR. RON BARROW, Dean of Gibson MR. NORMAN WOODS, Dean of Manous With these deans rests the responsibility of developing attributes which produce the traits of noble manhood. By combin¬ ing a sense of moral values, fair play and humor, their work is a strong influence in each boy ' s life. 13 ELDER EDWIN READING ELDER NORMAN CHAMBERLAIN The giving of a Christ-centered education is the purpose for which Auburn Acad¬ emy exists. The fulfillment of this aim de¬ pends to a large degree on the daily religious instruction of these men. ELDER C. L. WITZEL MR. BILL SIMMONS Learning to live successfully through the experiences of others is the foundation of the social science, Bible, and counseling departments. These men have both the knowledge and ability to make these sub¬ jects practical. MR. RONALD REED MR. WILLIAM COLEMAN With acrid odors escaping from the doors and windows and numerous equations and calculations written on the black¬ boards, the classrooms of said men take on the appearance of organized con¬ fusion. 14 ELDER VERNON BERRY MR. RAY LEADBETTER MR. CLEO LILE Equipment recently purchased in the language department prompts some ex¬ perimentation on the part of these teach¬ ers. A hearty thank you to Elder Berry for his liberal contribution toward this language lab. MR. ELMER LAMPSON MISS JOYCE LEONHARDT Whether financial statements or final ex¬ aminations, Mr. Lampson must prepare them both as business teacher and Academy accountant. Fingers on the home keys, eyes on your copy, you may write, is the familiar chant heard each day by 150 students as they race against the unmerciful stop watch in Miss Leon- hardt ' s typing classes. MR. MARVIN ROBERTSON MRS. C. L. WITZEL MR. JAMES HANSON Music as taught by these dedicated teach¬ ers truly becomes one of the most mag- nificant and delightful presents God has given us. The development of Christian character as well as teaching the com¬ plexities of dotted quarters, scales, cres¬ cendos, sharps and flats, is the objective of this department. 15 W IP MRS. WINNIE CARTER MRS. FLORENCE AIME, DIRECTOR OF FOOD SERVICE MRS. DOROTHY DONAHEY Behind the nourishing and delicious food prepared each day go long hours of back-breaking work for these dedicated women. Preparing three meals a day for 300 hungry students is a vital responsi¬ bility. A balance of work, play, study, and wholesome food is the formula for the successful, happy student at Auburn Academy. MRS. VERNON BERRY MRS. EUGENE WESSLEN MRS. RAY LEADBETTER Vitamins, treatments, and sound advice are the elements used by Mrs. Berry to fulfill the challenge of keeping 350 teenagers healthy and happy. Mrs. Wess- len and Mrs. Leadbetter promote our future welfare by teaching classes in physical education and health principles. MRS. CLEO LILE MRS. BESSIE SOULE MR. ED SPADY Valuable vocational training is offered in woodworking, metal shop, cooking, sew¬ ing, and textile painting. Interest is cre¬ ated and abilities developed as these teachers give instruction in the practical arts of daily living. 16 MR. ROBERT FARVER Mr. Farver, himself president of the ' Two- Hundred Pound Club ' encourages many new members by providing rich milk and delicious ice cream produced at the Academy Dairy. Early hours, fresh air, and lots of hard work each contribute to a well-rounded educational program for the boys who work down on the farm. MR. DONALD WERTZ MR. EUGENE WESSLEN Dirt on the hands, grease on the overalls, and oil on the face are often the lot of these men as they work to keep our school warm and in good repair. As text books are laid aside, thirty boys learn the important qualities of efficiency, industry and dependability as they assist these men in their important work. MRS. RONALD REED MRS. LEWIS BANEK In the laundry where sheets are counted by the hundreds, and towels by the thou¬ sands, a variety of tasks are provided for 24 students as the mountains of soiled clothes are laundered each week. 17 MR. WILLIAM BANEK MR. RICHARD ROBERTS MR. JOE DAY, FACTORY SUPERINTEN¬ DENT MR. BERRY DeVICE Through the management, sales, and ac¬ counting of these men, the Academy Wood Products continues to prosper and provide added opportunities for students to earn their school expenses while pre¬ paring themselves for future service. MR. RICHARD WARMEN MR. ROBERT SCHNEIDER MR. BILL DAY MR. L. E. SOULE MR. S. HELLAND MR. DAN GRAHAM MR. RICHARD JARRETT MR. RUSSELL SLABACH Under the leadership of these men over ninety students learn by the accurate use of hand and eye the skills of furniture manufacturing. MR. L. H. AUFDERHAR A rustle in the bush or grass may startle us momentarily, but on investigation we find it is none other than Mr. Aufderhar, affectionately called Aufty. His reg¬ ular hourly rounds keep our campus safe and free of unwelcome guests. 18 CLASSES vf blue BELL potato Chips PRESIDEN SECRETARY: BOBBIE BLISS - P. SPONSORS THE FALL FESTIVAL... There was only a ghost of a chance that you would not enjoy yourself at the ASB Fall Festival, the evening of October 31, 1960. Outside the night crept closer and the wind softly moaned, but inside there was laughter and noise. The students flocked to the booths to throw darts, shoot at balloons, toss rings, and bob for apples. Everyone won prizes, ate doughnuts and French fries, and drank cider and hot chocolate; some even borrowed pies! A hush came over the group as a black cat shrieked loudly and the program began. A faint, dim glow was the only lighting in the auditorium while Mr. Robertson told of the plotting feline family. bones about it, the Fall Festival is the bewitching program of the year. Doug Feather is all alone as he catches this pass on the 16 yard line. 82 Under the leadership of Mr. Woods and Mr. Barrow, our intramural sports program, with emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship, has been greatly expanded this year. Flag football is the latest of our organized intramural sports. The rules that govern the game of flag football are altered considerably from the rules of regular football. There are eight players on each team and each player is equipped with a flag. Removal of the ball carrier ' s flag consititutes a down. There is no tackling. The length of the field is 90 yards, rather than the regulation of 100 yards. There were five teams in the Intramural Flag Football League this year. After many a grueling battle on the gridiron. Lee Wolverton and Larry Hunton quarterbacked their teams into a first place tie. 83 INTRACLASS BASKETBALL Ron Reed, No. 41, controls a jump ball during a Freshman- Sophomore game. JUNIORS: Rick Cloin, Bob Littlejohn, James Pashtat, Archie Silcox, Lee Wolverton, Tom Ronan. SENIORS: Ken Heffel, Dave Crooker, Fred Price, Mike Pae, Dave Masterjohn, Danny Davidson. 84 Play periods during the long winter months provide ample time for the intra class basketball games. With fair play and teamwork uppermost in the minds of the players, and with the loyal support of their respective classes, the teams strive hard to take the laurels. League standing at press time. The next hitter. Bob Littlejohn, watches intently. INTRACLASS BASEBALL With the first signs of clearing weather the gym becomes a tomb and all of the activity turns to the baseball field. From there we hear the familiar sounds of the horsehide against the hickory. Spring practice brings the usual sore arms and aching backs, but to those who train diligently comes the reward of a place on the team. Emphasis is also placed on the development of the person in the field of individual sports. From fall to spring you will find many practicing tennis, ping-pong, horse¬ shoe, tumbling, trampo¬ line, weight lifting, and also participating in reg¬ ular physical education program sponsored by the school. As in the parable of the builders, we hope that our building has been founded on the solid Rock, Christ Jesus. This yearbook has been a co-operative effort of many individuals. I would like to take this opportu¬ nity to thank those who have so willingly and faith¬ fully shared the responsibilities of publishing the 1961 RANIER VISTA.
