Working in conjunction with them were Superintendent William McKay, pictured lower left, and Principal Jack Campbell, pictured lower center. Mrs. Vevalee Smith, unit bookkeeper, is pictured lower right and Mrs. Judy Gardner, unit secretary is pictured right. 10 Teachers Offer Varied Courses, Activities Teachers found themselves very busy teaching a great variety of courses and also sponsoring many after school activities. Mr. John Lyons, far left, taught drivers’ education and also P.E. He was head football coach. Mrs. Nancy Maxedon taught English II, American literature, English literature, writing, world literature, and journalism. She also sponsored the cheerleaders and the sophomore class. Mr. Tim Burk taught English I, mystery science fiction, contemporary literature, and grammar. He was head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He was sophomore class sponsor also. Mrs. Linda Jones taught P.E. and coached girls’ volleyball. She also sponsored G.A.A. Mr. Steve Shirley taught general science. Biology I and II, and health. n Miss Lois Shonkwiler taught U.S. History, world history, world geography, and consumer education. She advised the senior class and National Honor Society. Mr. Jim Wood taught basic math, Algebra II, trigonometry, physical science, and physics. He also sponsored Camera Club. Mr. Jim Cullison taught basic agriculture, wiring, welding, agricultural business management, advanced animal science, and crop production. He sponsored FFA and National Honor Society. Mrs. Connie England taught Typing 1 and II, Shorthand I, and office practice. She sponsored the senior class and National Honor Society. 12 Miss Ann Neely, upper left, taught chorus at all unit schools. She also organized a swing choir at the high school. Mrs. Susan Kraybill, lower left, was the band instructor at the junior high and high school. She conducted marching band, concert band, and jazz band. Ms. Fraun Lewis, upper right, taught psychology, poetry, novels, and speech. She also was librarian and junior class sponsor. Mr. Carl Sebens, lower right, taught Algebra 1 and geometry. 13 Mrs. Wanda Newlin, right, taught HERO, child care, textiles, foods, food career lab, and consumer education. She sponsored the freshman class, Spanish club, and POST. Mrs. Jane Lockett taught general business, accounting and consumer education. She also sponsored AFS. Mr. Jerry Newlin taught industrial occupations orientation, drafting, power woodworking, and cabinetmaking. He advised the freshman class and student council. Queen Shelley Long and King Tim Sawyer reigned over the 1978 homecoming festivities. They were chosen by the student body from a field of three senior candidates for each title. 31 33 Juniors—Only One Step Away The class of 1980 was only one step away front seniority this year at A-HHS. With a 52 member class, the juniors struggled toward their annual goal of the spring prom. Thoughts of college weighed heavily on the minds of some juniors as they began to choose their future plans. For some, it meant that all important American College Test. Dreams became reality as many sophomores obtained class rings and driver's licenses. Class members elected Lori Perry and Rich Whightsil as their delegates. 40 41 Small Freshman Class Enters A-HHS The freshmen, class of 1982, received their first taste of high school during the 78- 79 school year. The class was the smallest at A-HHS, with only 48 members. With their arrival at A-HHS, the freshmen learned of high school life with class elections and extracurricular activities. Freshmen found that entering high school involved many responsibilities. Decisions were made as to which courses to take and in which activities to participate. These officers served through out the year as freshman class leaders. 44 45 47 A-HHS TACKLES FOOTBALL CHALLENGE The Atwood-Hammond Rajahs pushed their way to a 3-6 season this year, finishing low in the Little Okaw standings. Rajahs captured third place in the Frosh-Soph LOVC meet having missed second place by one-fourth point. Steve Romine placed sixth in the long jump and 8th in the triple jump at the district meet. At the same meet, Herbie Utt won the long jump and advanced to the state meet. He also placed fourth in the district triple jump. 62 63 Rajahs Step High with New Director 66 The Marching Rajahs began their 1978 season under a new director. Mrs. Susan Kraybiii. The Marching Rajahs began their competition tour at the Tuscola Old Fashioned Days Parade where they received second place and S75. Next the band traveled to the University of Illinois to compete in both parade and field. The Rajahs took fourth in field and seventh in parade, both in Class C. On October 21, the band marched their way to the Shelbyville Band Festival for Exhibition. The Marching Ra-jajs took their last trip on December 2, to the Paxton Jul Fest. They received second place and S200. Giles and Alan Cothron received S25 for best field directors. On November 3, the senior Marching Rajahs, along with Mrs. Kraybiii, were honored at the Parent’s Night football game. 67 Concert Band Earns Second Place Rating Atwood-Hammond’s concert band earned a second place rating at Casey’s band contest in April. They included bowling in October, a formal initiation and potluck dinner in November, a December Christmas party, nursing home visits in January, FHA Heart Sister Week in February,a sock hop in April, and a trip to Chicage’s Marriot’s Great America on May 12, to round out the group’s activities. Besides striving to meet all deadlines, staff members hoped to improve all areas of the book including coverage, copy, and photography. To aid themselves in meeting these goals, staff members joined the Pastern Illinois High School Press Association. A copy of the 1978 POST was sent to be judged in competition and critiqued to provide guidelines for improvement. The E1SHPA awarded Atwood-Hainmond’s POST second place for layout design in the small school category. Twenty-three other schools competed in this division in the statewide contest. This was the second consecutive year that the team took the LOVC title. In addition, the scholastic team attended several other meets including tournaments at Sullivan and Mt. Pulaski. Cerda’s visit with her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Fleener and Sonya, began August 4, and ended June 29. Gerda participated in AFS, GAA, Spanish Club, chorus, and carried her national flag in marching band. While here, Gerda enjoyed horseback riding, reading, dancing, swimming, and studying different languages and cultures. Gerda’s stay in the Mid west included trips to Chicago, St. Louis, Tennessee, and Colorado. A-HHS was very happy to share this learning experience with Gerda. 88 Duncombs Host Uruguayan Horacio Lampertti from Montevideo, Uruguay,arrived in Atwood, in August 1978 to spend a school year with his American family, Mrs. Mary Ann Dunscomb, Jon and Mary Alice. Horacio’s interests and hobbies included stamp collecting, photography, and listening to records. Horacio often visited Spanish classes to share his language and culture. Spanish students felt this was a very beneficial experience. Horacio travelled to St. Louis, Chicago,and Florida while in America. Horacio made many friends during his stay in Atwood and shared much knowledge with them. 89 91 A-HHS PARADES THRU ATWOOD The A-H Marching Rajahs led this year’s homecoming parade on Friday, October 6, 1978. The Rajahs were followed by an assortment of clowns, horses, queens, and floats. School groups as well as various community organizations and individuals helped to make the parade a huge success. The A-H Student Council was in charge of the parade. Sylvia Barret, the lead character, played by Sonya Fleener, finds herself the most involved person in the school. She is involved in the start of a romance, in a near war with a discipline-over-everything administrator, but most of all involved in the unexpected and sometimes heartbreaking problems of her students. Approximately fifty couples attended “Heaven Tonight” on April 27. After a banquet dinner of roast beef and shrimp, the band Centaur provided live music for dancing and relaxing. Post prom consisted of attending a film at Mattoon s Twin Theatre.
