Commencement exercises for the class of 1978 were held June 2, at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Pictured right are Mary Jane Ballard, valedictorian; and Lora Fleener, salutatorian. Lora welcomed the audience to the exercises and Mary Jane presented the class farewell. Several class members formed a senior choir to perform at commencement. Several began making future educational and vocational plans. Projects were planned and carried out to earn money to host the junior-senior prom. Other activities were crowded into the junior year as class members took an active part in homecoming, the school play, student council week, and various sports. Homecoming attendants are pictured lower left. They were Sonya Fleener and Russ Jamison. A junior who won statewide recognition was Bob Smith, who placed fourth in the state “Voice of Democracy” competition, after having won the local and district competitions. Bob also gained recognition as an outstanding team member. Also pictured is John Greenhalgh, lower left, who moved to Atwood mid-year. Sophomores on these pages are involved in just a few of the activities that brightened their year. Many sophomores were enrolled in Biology II and were given the opportunity to dissect cats. Other activities which involved sophomores included homecoming, the Home Economics Fashion Show scholastic team, Student Council Hat Day, and just ordinary studying and having fun. Special honors given to sophomores were Mark Vetter, honorable mention for the scholastic team; Phyllis Warner, most improved home ec student; Lisa Heit, outstanding POST sales; and Brian Eyestone, Star Greenhand. 42 43 Freshmen Discover Activities at AHHS Freshmen began the school year by electing class officers. Mr. Jerry Newlin acted as an assistant. New editions were made to the marching band this year, including a rifle squad and twin field directors Giles and Allen Cothron. The Marching Rajahs attended the following parades: Areola Broom Corn Festival, Tuscola Old-fashioned Days, Atwood Halloween Parade. Atwood Memorial Parade, and the Decatur Christmas Parade where they received fourth place. The Marching Rajahs also participated in the following field show competitions: Eastern Illinois University, where they placed third; Champaign Central, second place; and University of Illinois, third place overall band and first place percussion. The Marching Rajahs were also invited to perform at Shelbyville for an exhibition show. Band members were honored at a weiner roast sponsored by the band-boosters and also a hamburger supper at Taylor’s Restaurant sponsored by the Atwood merchants. Bob Smith was named Most Valuable Player of the tourney. The junior and senior teams participated at Sullivan where the juniors won fourth place. The junior team took part in the Warrensburg-Latham meet. Bob Smith was named to the alltourney team there. The seniors also participated in a meet at Arthur. Joins Kickapoo District, Hosts Activities At wood-Hammond Student Council joined the Kickapoo District for the first time. Two of the most anticipated activities of the year, homecoming and Student Council Week, were hosted by student council members. Much time was spent in planning and preparing for these activities. Many of the student council activities are pictured on the following pages 72 AFS Sponsors Kerstin Soderstrom The American Field Service continued their program by sponsoring a Norwegian student, Kerstin Soderstrom. To raise money the group held a variety show in the fall in which many members and non-members participated. A dance followed in the gym. Both functions were well-attended by A-HHS students and several AFS students from the area. Mike was elected to the all-conference first team, received the Rebound Trophy, won the Field Goal Award, and the Most Valuable Player Award. Mike also had the highest point average per game of 16.9 points and was elected honorary co-captain. Gary Mosbarger was also honorary co-captain and won the free throw award with a 68 percent average. Billy Fleming received the Hustle Award for the most determination and hustle throughout the year. All members participated in the district track meet. 87 89 Rain Fails to Dampen Homecoming Spirit Despite gloomy drizzle throughout the parade, spirits more costly floats for the parade. The first homecoming vic- were high during homecoming festivities. Tradition was bro- tory in three years took place on Friday night following the ken as students’ cars and trucks were decorated in place of parade. 90 The 1977 Homecoming Dance was held in the Atwood-Hammond gym, October 8. Queen Shari Long was crowned by King Robert Quick at 8:00 p.m. The theme of the dance was “Carry on. Wayward Sun”. Tradition was upheld as the king kissed the queen and the couple led the first dance. Student Council members worked a week in advance decorating the gym for the celebration. Skits, vocal solos and ensembles made up the program. Visiting AFS students and Atwood-Hammond’s Kerstin Soderstrom also participated in the program by singing a song about peanut butter and jelly. In the spring a second talent show was sponsored by Mr. Bob Stiehl and the music department. Both shows were very successful. 96 A-H Presents 1920’s Play Atwood-Hammond High School presented the all-school play, “Cheaper by the Dozen”, April 21, in the gym. Mrs. Nancy Maxedon was the director. The play takes place in the living-room of the Gilbreth home, in Montclair, New Jersey, in the 1920’s. Mr. Frank Gilbreth is a middle-aged father who carries himself with the self assurance of a successful man who is proud of his wife, his family and his business accomplishments. Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth is a gracious wife and understanding mother of twelve children. She is a psychologist in her own way and can often get better results from her family than Dad, yet isn’t a disciplinarian. Anne is the oldest of the Gilbreth children and is determined to become emancipated from her Dad’s “old-fashioned” ways. Frank and Ernestine are the narrators. Mrs. Fitzgerald is a kindly buxom housekeeper. Dr. Burton is the family doctor, a plain, outspoken man. Miss Brill is a thin and sallow teacher with no compassion for children. Larry is a clean cut boy who wants to date Anne. Joe Scales is a cocky cheerleader. The evening began with a welcome from Tim Sawyer, junior class president, and a thank-you from Scott Harris, senior class president. Rhonda Trout, junior class secretary, gave the invocation. A dance was held after dinner with music by the band “Games”. Tina Hale and Bob Quick were named Captain and First Mate of the Prom during the dance. The movie “Smo-key and the Bandit” was viewed for post-prom. Jan Birch will be Secretary for the President of the United States. Cindy Blaase will own a data processing business. Angie Bosley will be head of the fruit department in IGA. Jim Dyer will be a policeman. 102 103 106 107 Kerstin Soderstrom Lives with Heit Family Kerstin Soderstrom, and AFS student from Narvik, Norway, spent the 1977-78 school year with the Lyle Heit family of rural Atwood. Kerstin’s stay with Mr. and Mrs. Heit, Crystal, Lisa, and Alana began July 23 and ended June 30. Kerstin’s hobbies included playing volleyball and horseback riding. Kerstin was a valuable asset to the A-HHS volleyball team and was also able to enjoy horseback riding at the Heit farm. A farewell party was held for Kerstin at the Atwood park June 28.
