A H H S THE POST Atwood-Hammond High School Atwood, III. DEDICATION Mr. David J. Dunscomb dedicated his time and many talents to us, so we, in turn, the POST Staff of 1971, would like to dedicate a small token to him-the 1971 POST. Fifteen years ago, he joined the faculty of A-HHS as band and choral director, the same position which he held until his sudden death in December, 1970. “Eight steps to every five yards may not mean anything to most, but for the marching band, it was one of his fundamentals of good marching. Many of us will always remember our band lessons, band, chorus, practicing on solos and ensembles. Dixieland and Dance Band practice, contests, concerts, working with the seniors on their Homecoming float, and many other areas in which we saw Mr. Dunscomb. Even the townspeople thought of him as a dedicated person. He was a participant of the church, its choir. Chamber of Commerce, and the Lion’s Club. In the time that he was with A-HHS everyone found a place for him in their hearts, now, he is no longer with us in body, but the memory of him will live on and on. Atwood-Hammond High School, Atwood, Illinois 61913 Vol. XXXV No. 11______________________Dec. 23, 1970 Death of Music Director Saddens Whole Community David J. Dunscomb, music director at Atwood - Hamnond High since 1956, died at St. John’s Hospital, Spring-field Monday night. Mr. Dunscomb, who had a bachelor's and master's degree in music education from Millikin University, had won many awards with both his vocal and instrumental A-HHS groups at district and state contests. His stage and Dixieland bands have made many community appearances including recent ones at the USO in Rantoul. One of the highlights of the year is his annual school concert featuring his 73-piece high school concert band and 78-member mixed chorus. Surviving are his wife Mary Ann; his son Jon, fourth grade; and daughter Mary Alice, kindergarten. DAVID DUNSCOMB Dixieland Blues Concert Stage Church Pep Session Practice room We knew him in all these aspects of music. He has moved a little nearer To the Master of all music. Out of respect to Mr. Dunscomb the basketball game with Areola was postponed from last night until a later date and this afternoon's all-school program was cancelled. 3 OLGA Olga Stojiljkovic, of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, spent her senior year as a foreign exchange student at A-HHS. Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Kamin, Beth, Jake, and Susan became her American family. An only child, her father is editor of a public newspaper which deals with economic problems. He is also a professor of political science at the University of Yugoslavia. Olga’s opportunity to live in the United States came through YOUTH FOR UNDERSTANDING which has exchange student programs in Europe, Japan, South America, and the United States. The center of YFU is in Detroit, Michigan. The youth in the program choose the country they wish to visit and the YFU places them in the cities where families have applied for foreign students. Coming from a 6-day school week, Olga found A-HHS easier than her Belgrade school. The grading systems are similar in both schools. Olga said she liked the vocational aspect of AHHS. Pictured above is Olga and her American sister Beth. 6 NEW Several additions were made to the facilities at Atwood-Hammond High School this year. Above left is a rack holding the composite pictures of graduating classes from 1949 to 1969, given by various graduating classes. Above is the new concession stand on the football field purchased by the school and various graduating classes. This was built to replace the concession stand which was burned to the ground on December 28, 1969. Left is the dust collector addition to the industrial arts department. Suction picks up dirt in the shop and empties it into the barrel shown. ATA-H Above right is the FFA sign at the west edge of the property, made to show the appreciation of the FFA Chapter toward the businessmen who rented land and supplied machinery to the development of the farm plot. Right is the activities sign purchased by the classes of 1965 and 1970. A quintet of A-HHS coeds show current styles this year at school. Senior Dale Brandenburg is wearing a blue midi; sophomore Janice Johnson models the mini with knee boots; senior Anna Day is wearing the new pants suit; senior Jody Chapman models the culotte; and senior Judy Fleener wears a floor length skirt. Below, A-HHS students take their turn at the Atwood Grade School lunch room. Opposite, above, students vacate the building at 3:35, one of two daily “fire” drills. Opposite, below, the buses wait for the end of school on a snowy winter day. Elva Williams retired from the bus service at the end of 1970, selling his business to Ronald Eagan. I!l!l!l!l I! JUNIOR REVIEWER PRAISES CASTING ALSO ACTING IN BIG ROCK” (from the Nov. 25, 1970 AT-TO-HI) by Marty Fombelle Casting and acting in “Big Rock at Candy's Mountain” were great! A comment of “well done” must be given to Patty Bishop and Cathy Casteel as the two old aunts. Their voices, as well as their postures, lent to good performances of two old spinsters who are suddenly awakened to today’s young people. Joe Wolfe, portraying the role of “Zippity Dewdar” did a fantastic job as a rock”em, sock-’em group promoter. Another striking character was PLAY Jane Humes as Myra Mobile. Jane played a supposedly gentle girl who spoke of her hard life but actually was a pushy, demanding griper. Debby Decker as Unice Webb, a secretary to Dan Stephenson (Mr. Garrison) showed the crowd that she wasn’t as old as her dress seemed to indicate. She could twist and shake with the best of them. Dan’s performance was quite adequate as a young man trying to make his way, even though his father is a multi-millionaire. Cheryl Ruff, as Candy, also handed in a good performance. When the chips were down she would do just about anything to keep her farm, which was the site for the rock fest. On the whole, it was an enjoyable evening. POM POM A new addition at A-HHS this year was the appearance of the POMPOM girls under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Marlow at home basketball games.
