A street scene. A night class in a school room. Another street scene. A teacher’s lounge. The school room again. A city apartment. A street scene. Swiftly the junior class stage crew and cast set up one scene after another 15 of them—in the production of “The Education of Hyman Kaplan, Nov. 22. Through all ran a welter of Eastside New York dialects Jewish, Polish, Irish, Italian. (AT-TO-H1 Review) Thirty-three members of the cast and stage crew called upon their hidden foreign accents and talents to present “The Education of Hyman Kaplan” by Benjamin Bernard Zavin. The play was so new that the music written to accompany it had not yet been printed. The setting in it is New York City and primarily in a school room. Immigrants who were trying to pass their citizenship exams, their teachers, an anarchist and court officials make up the cast. Their common struggle for an education and the great desire to become citizens was not only engrossing, but amusing. Two skits, “The Machine” and “The Chase”, were performed under the direction of student teachers, Miss Glenda Nielson and Miss Myra Lazerwith.
