HALLOWEEN 1968 ELECTION In an election at A-H, students elected Richard Nixon to the office of president over his opponents George Wallace and Hubert Humphrey, and Richard Ogilvie to the office of governor of Illinois over incumbent governor Samuel Shapiro. The national election returns showed Ogilvie winner of the Illinois governor race and Nixon winning with the Illinois electoral votes. Oddly enough, students elected a Democratic lieutenant governor, Paul Simon, by one vote over his Republican opponent Rovert Dwyer, which tallied with the state returns which gave Simon the lead. Rep. William Springer was also reelected in both the school and state elections. Sen. Everett Dirksen was reelected by both students and the people of the state over his opponent, William Clark. Overall, the school election seemed to depict the results of the national and state elections. Nov. 8, AT-TO-HI. 20 Below left, voting are Mary Martin Pennington and Doug West;election “judges” are Flossie Blythe and Nancy Mauck. Right: Janice Fleener and Jan Kiley cast their votes.
