STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council began the year by making plans for its main project Homecoming. Six committees were set up to begin preparations in early September. Chairmen of these committees were Pat Frazier, Grand March; Brian Fay, publicity; Marilyn Quick, band; Tracy Walkup, parade; Jan Kiley, theme and decorations; and John Spencer, bonfire. Former HC Queens received special invitations to HC from the Grand March committee. The publicity committee saw that the tickets were printed and numbered and notified radio stations and newspapers about HC. They also distributed flyers to each home in Garrett, Pierson, Atwood and Hammond one week before HC. After receiving the names of three available bands the SC contracted “The Artistics” to play for HC. Parade committee members planned the parade route and order, borrowed and washed convertibles for use by the HC court. Supplies were ordered by the theme and decoration committee for use in decorating the stage and gym to comply with the theme “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. Jerry Rich, art instructor, assisted SC members in painting yearbook covers, making three panels representing the three time periods in the theme for the stage. Members worked every night and in study halls for a week before HC to finish the stage. Bonfire committee members gathered materials for the fire and cleared the snake dance route with town police. Two changes in HC procedure were made this year. The queen and king were not kept secret and escorts, as well as attendants, were elected by the classes for the HC court. 13
