THE POST 1969 ATWOOD-HAMMOND HIGH SCHOOL ATWOOD, ILLINOIS A YEAR AT ATWOOD-HAMMOND HIGH SCHOOL The class of 1969 dedicates this POST to “A Year at A-HHS”. This theme is portrayed in the book by presenting it as the activities occur throughout the school. As the book opens, we see students coming to school in the fall, ready to tackle any task the teachers may assign. As we turn the pages, we find that one of the first activities is the football season followed by Homecoming. The players are grouped in their respective positions for easy identification. This year something new has been added; a two-page color spread of the football team, the 1968-1969 Okaw Valley Conference co-champions with Areola. This is our way of paying tribute to a fine team. Each class in the book is presented at a time when something important happened to that class. The freshmen are introduced during initiation; the sophomores during sophomore night; the juniors at the time of their class play; and the seniors at graduation, closing the book and marking the end of another short and busy school year. 1968-1969 Page Aug. 17, 1968 First day of school 2 Sept. 13 First football game OKAW VALLEY CONFERENCE CHAMPS 4 Oct. 11 Freshman initiation 10 Oct. 18 Twirlers (HC parade and show) 12 Oct. 18 Student Council (HC) 13 Oct. 18 Homecoming (bonfire, parade, game, dance) 14 Oct. 31 Halloween 20 Nov. 2 Election 20 Nov. 18 FFA convention 21 Nov. 21 AT-TO-H1 on WCIA-TV 22 Nov. 22 Junior Class Play 14 Dec. 1 Basketball begins DISTRICT CHAMPS 28 Dec. 9 Library Club Party 32 Dec. 20 Christmas 33 Dec. 28 Holiday Basketball Tourney Jan. 20, 1969 Cheerleaders (OKAW VALLEY TOURNEY) 34 April Senior Play Page 36 First week SC week 40 of Apr. We are No. 1!” This was the chant by the Atwood-Hammond Rajahs and their fans after completing their 8-0 season with a 26-6 win over Sullivan. Thirteen years had elapsed since the last time A-H had won the Okaw Championship which, as now. was shared by Areola in 1955. Under the leadership of Coach Lynn Strack and his assistants Dean Strobel and Larry Bradford, the victorious Rajahs completed their season with five shutouts and only 25 points being scored against them. No touchdown passes were thrown on the A-H team and only three runs of more than 20 yards were made against the Rajahs all season. The defensive backs intercepted 13 passes. Fifty-four of 102 passes were completed with only four interceptions. The Rajahs rushed for 1,593 yards and passed for 894, or a total of 2,487 yards. Their opponents rushed for 627 and passed for 466, a total of 1,093. Fritz Boll became top Okaw scorer with 87 points and he totaled 99 points for the season. John Spencer was next with 51 points. Leading tackier was Doug Reeder with 55 solos and 39 assists. Steve Willoughby had 47 solo tackles Tackles Lee Louret.Mike Sebens.John White, Doug Reeder. and 25 assists. Tim Burk passed to 12 touchdowns and ran for two. Halfback Fritz Boll, Quarterback Tim Burk, tackle Doug Reeder, and end Bob Helfrich were selected to the Okaw Valley All-Star Team. Coach Strack summed up the winning season by saying, Our success was due to tremendous desire and unusual closeness among the boys.” The freshman-sophomore team finished the season with a total of 2 wins and 4 losses. The frosh-sophs scored 73 points in all games played; their opponents scored 74. The leading scorer by rushing was freshman Tom Myers. Freshman Dan Stephenson caught the most touchdown passes. Sophomore Mike Romine completed the most tackles. The freshman team won 2 games and lost one. The frosh team scored 68 points, while their opponents scored only 38. Freshman football players were fairly strong this year and should improve to be great players in a couple of years. 7 Ends standing: Steve Mutch, Brian Fay, Larry Conner, Morris Huffman, Randy Beck, Bob Helfrich, assistant coach Dean Strobel. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council began the year by making plans for its main project Homecoming. Six committees were set up to begin preparations in early September. Chairmen of these committees were Pat Frazier, Grand March; Brian Fay, publicity; Marilyn Quick, band; Tracy Walkup, parade; Jan Kiley, theme and decorations; and John Spencer, bonfire. Former HC Queens received special invitations to HC from the Grand March committee. The publicity committee saw that the tickets were printed and numbered and notified radio stations and newspapers about HC. They also distributed flyers to each home in Garrett, Pierson, Atwood and Hammond one week before HC. After receiving the names of three available bands the SC contracted “The Artistics” to play for HC. Parade committee members planned the parade route and order, borrowed and washed convertibles for use by the HC court. Supplies were ordered by the theme and decoration committee for use in decorating the stage and gym to comply with the theme “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. Jerry Rich, art instructor, assisted SC members in painting yearbook covers, making three panels representing the three time periods in the theme for the stage. Members worked every night and in study halls for a week before HC to finish the stage. Bonfire committee members gathered materials for the fire and cleared the snake dance route with town police. Two changes in HC procedure were made this year. The queen and king were not kept secret and escorts, as well as attendants, were elected by the classes for the HC court. 13 Grand March Leaders Judy Wallace and Bob Helfrich; Queen Rhonda Stephenson, King Kent Phalen; Grand March Leaders Fritz Boll and Mary Poindexter. Seniors Pat Frazier John Spencer Juniors Randy Beck Stevenetta Earley u OCT. 17-19, 1968 HOMECOMING Theme of the 1968 Homecoming was “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” with the theme song, “Yesterday.” Activities began with a bonfire at the high school and a snake dance through town on Thursday evening, Oct. 17. Friday afternoon the parade, which included the marching band, class floats, court, town fire trucks, old cars, and the student body, made its way downtown where a pep session was held. Float prizes were announced during the pep session. The Rajahs were victorious in the Homecoming game Friday night, defeating Newman, 31-0. Student council members decorated the stage with three panels representing “Yesterday,” ‘Today,” and ‘Tomorrow,” for the dance on Saturday, Oct. 19. Music was provided by the Artistics. Former Homecoming queens received special invitations and sat in a reserved row of chairs to watch the proceedings. Mary Poindexter, Fritz Boll, Judy Wallace and Bob Helfrich led the grand march into the gym. At the dance the 1968 Homecoming Queen, Rhonda Stephenson, was crowned by King Kent Phalen. Other members of the court were Pat Frazier and John Spencer, seniors; Stevenetta Early and Randy Beck, juniors; Carol Lust and Rick Ashmore, sophomores; Ruanita Bryson and Mike Mayhall, freshmen. Mary Alice Dunscomb served as flower girl. Freshmen Mike Mayhall Ruanita Bryson Sophomores Carol Lust Rick Ashmore 15 Many long hours of work went into preparing class floats for the Homecoming parade. The national election returns showed Ogilvie winner of the Illinois governor race and Nixon winning with the Illinois electoral votes. Oddly enough, students elected a Democratic lieutenant governor, Paul Simon, by one vote over his Republican opponent Rovert Dwyer, which tallied with the state returns which gave Simon the lead. Rep. William Springer was also reelected in both the school and state elections. Sen. Everett Dirksen was reelected by both students and the people of the state over his opponent, William Clark. Overall, the school election seemed to depict the results of the national and state elections. Through all ran a welter of Eastside New York dialects Jewish, Polish, Irish, Italian. (AT-TO-H1 Review) Thirty-three members of the cast and stage crew called upon their hidden foreign accents and talents to present “The Education of Hyman Kaplan” by Benjamin Bernard Zavin. The play was so new that the music written to accompany it had not yet been printed. The setting in it is New York City and primarily in a school room. Immigrants who were trying to pass their citizenship exams, their teachers, an anarchist and court officials make up the cast. Their common struggle for an education and the great desire to become citizens was not only engrossing, but amusing. Two skits, “The Machine” and “The Chase”, were performed under the direction of student teachers, Miss Glenda Nielson and Miss Myra Lazerwith. LIBRARY CLUB 32 CHRISTMAS The 1968 Student Council Christmas program held on December 20 featured skits from various countries and periods of time. A boy’s quartet from the Spanish department consisting of Gary Hendrickson, Joe Wolfe. Kevin Reeder, and Fred Mosbarger, led off the afternoon activities with carols in Spanish. This was followed by a “hippie” version, a modern Christmas skit and a skit from the “Stone Age,” shown (upper right, Cathy Can, Patty Rigg, and Kerrie Swartz). Skits given from countries other than the United States were: Holland, Germany, Mexico and Great Britain. Ronnie Osborn and Brian Fay are shown upper right with Dutch shoes. Charlie Brown and his gang also made an appearance. Fritz Boll wrote and produced a play which included Bob Helfrich, Santa Claus (shown at right); Tim Burk, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer; John Spencer, Dancer; Gary Sebens, Prancer; Brian Fay, Scrooge; who hired two hunters, Thad Harned and Kent Phalen, to kill Rudolph; and Doug Reeder, Eli the Elephant (shown at right) who wanted to pull Santa’s sleigh. A “Laugh-In interpretation was given by all Student Council members. Santa Claus did appear briefly to suggest a few appropriate gifts for faculty members and also to leave candy for the students. FHA gave a Christmas program for pre-schoolers and kindergarten on December 16. They played games (lower right), had refreshments and Santa Claus brought a gift for each child. 33 34 Upper left, page 34, shows the Varsity cheerleaders. THE SENIOR PLAYS Members of the class of ’69 presented a trio of short one-act plays April 18, directed by Mrs. Louise Bean. “Ladies of the Mop” was about four scrub women and their dreams of being famous performers. The roles of the charwomen were very well cast. Annie, played by Jan Romine, did a dramatic scene with her mop. Cathy Carr, as Mattie, wanted to be a virtuoso pianist. She started her career by playing “Chopsticks” for the audience. Hallie, portrayed by Janet Cox, was a trim, graceful ballet dancer whose leaps and bounds were very entertaining. Mary Day, who played Bessie, surprised the crowd with her voice and performing ability. “Forgive Us Our Chicken Coops” posed the pressing question, “What is a church?” It was a classic example of organization and automation, distinguished from other churches by a “spire that’s higher and a computer that’s cuter”. This satire gave some very pertinent answers to the question, “Why do people go to church?” Among the answers were: “I feel guilty if 1 don’t go.” “All of the better people go.” “My wife makes me go.” “Bill and the Widow Maker” was the story of Pecos Bill, coyote to cowboy. Bob Helfrich, as Pecos Bill, did a good job of an infant torn between being a coyote or cowboy. His decision to be a coyote was pushed by Don Coyote’s “yip-yap,” played by Fritz Boll. Thad Harned tried to win Pecos Bill over to the cowboys’ side with beans. Tim Burk tried to catch a cow by coaxing it into a lasso with flowers.
