CLASS HISTORY The first class to begin high school at Atwood-Hammond after the remodeling had been completed, contained twenty-three girls and thirty-seven boys. Keith Casteel was elected president; Lonnie Conner, vice-president; Kathy Pourchot, secretary;and Peggy Sellable, treasurer. Representing the class on Student Council were Karen Standerfer and Rob Personett. AT-TO-H1 class reporters were Marcia Willey and Doug Whitley. Initiation was held during the last part of September with the girls wearing long underwear and the boys wearing white shirts and shorts. Elected as junior varsity cheerleaders were Bunny Dick and Peggy Schable, with Kathy Pourchot as twirler. Karen Standerfer was homecoming attendant with Lonnie Conner as her escort. The freshman float. “We’ll Execute the Knights,” was awarded fourth place. Gregg Taylor lettered in track his first year, while Jeff Leisner served as track manager. Karen Standerfer, Jim Libbin, Marcia Willey, and Wanda Brown received firsts at the state music contest. Gregg Ponder played in the dance band. The Freshman basketball team placed third in the Unity Freshman Tournament. During the year we gained Robert Gulley from Kentucky, Jerry Trotter from Arthur, and Dave West from Tennessee. We lost Kirk Wunnenburg to Cincinnati, Ohio, Sharon Briggs to Pennsylvania, Bunny Dick to California, Peggy Smith to Champaign, and Edward Sample dropped. Freshman class advisers were Mrs. Wanda Newlin and Bob Williams. Twenty-five girls and thirty-eight boys returned their sophomore year. Keith Casteel was elected president; Jim Libbin, vice-president; Kathy Pourchot, secretary; Peggy Schable, treasurer. Representing the class on Student Council were Karen Standerfer and Rob Personett. Karen Kauffman and John Quick served the class as AT-TO-F11 reporters, while Marcia Willey and Doug Whitley wrote as at-large reporters. Junior varsity cheerleaders were Kathy Pourchot, Karen Standerfer, with Peggy Schable serving as captain. Homecoming attendant was Peggy Schable escorted by Jeff Harshbarger. The sophomore float, “Tip-a-Canoe-and Redskins Too,” received first place. Russell Dukeman served the FFA as secretary, and Doug Whitley served as president of the newly formed chess club. Attending conservation camp at S1U were Beryl Harshbarger, Jeff Harshbarger, Mark Bragg, and Russell Dukeman. Connie Patrick and Kathy Pourchot attended GAA camp at Bloomington, Illinois. Serving as sports managers were Keith Casteel, Beryl Harshbarger, Jim Libbin, and Eric Stephenson, basketball; Danny Ferguson and Bob Randolph, football; Larry Biggs and Doug Sims, track. Wanda Brown, Peggy Schable and Marcia Willey received firsts at the state music contest. Gregg Ponder also played in the dance band. Gained during the year were Sandra Crook and Judy Kibler. Shirley Buckley moved to Boody, Illinois, while Sally Chandler, Dennis Day, Kathy Garrett, Jim Mann, W.V. Patrick, Eddie Sample, and Sharon Conour dropped. Sophomore class advisers were Mr. Robert Ryburn and Mrs. Lucie Merrill. The class of 1968 returned their junior year with nineteen girls and thirty-two boys. Class officers were Jim Libbin, president; Russell Dukeman, vice-president; Beryl Harshbarger, treasurer; Gregg Taylor, secretary. Student Council representatives were Keith Casteel and Karen Standerfer. Junior attendant was Kathy Pourchot with Jeff Harshbarger as her escort. The float, Beat ’em to the Ball, received second place. Varsity cheerleaders were Kathy Pourchot, Peggy Schable, and Karen Standerfer. All three attended cheerleading camp. Writing for the AT-TO-H1 were Keith Casteel, Jim Libbin, and Pam Walkup. Serving on production staff were Cindy Chambers, Jim Crowe, Rose Ann Hannon, Margaret Hendrickson, and Marsha Reisner. Magazine captains were Neil Cox and Doug Whitley. High salesmen were Mark Bragg and Jeff Leisner. Doug Whitley was chosen Post editor; Wanda Brown, assistant editor; Keith Casteel, advertising manager; Larry Biggs, assistant advertising manager; Beryl Harshbarger, business manager; Marcia Willey, literary editor; Karen Kauffman, assistant literary editor; Peggy Schable, subscription manager. The junior plays, “The Happy Journey from Trenton to Camden,” and “The Long Christmas Dinner” were given November 18, 1966. 26
