ATWOOD - HAMMOND THE POST 1968 ATWOOD-HAMMOND HIGH SCHOOL ATWOOD M ILLINOIS This frame schoolhouse preceded our present building. It was built in 1881 and burned in 1913. Dr. James J. Abrams’ house at 409 North Main was built on its old foundation in 1916. 1918 Building DEDICATION We the class of 1968, dedicate our Post to our school building which has seen 50 years of education. Within this building, we have been patiently taught the difference between right and wrong and our minds have been enriched with the joy of learning. As the building grows older, it becomes more majestic. It was built and completed in 1918. It burned the following month and was rebuilt. Many additions and improvements have resulted from the pride we show in our school. The gymnasium was built in 1938, and the ag shop was erected in 1955 to the west of the building. In 1964 the building was completely remodeled and reorganized. A new east entrance to the gym and a new bandroom over it were also completed in 1964. Industrial arts classes were moved to the ag shop after an addition to the building was finished during that same year. During the next 50 years, we hope the students will take as much pride in this building as did those in the previous 50. The emblem at the right was designed by an A-H HS alum. Bob Day, class of 1941. 3 1918 ADMINISTRATION 1938 4 NOIlVaiSINIWaV Robert Scheffer President, School Board George Kiiey Secretary, School Board ADMINISTRATION Principal William McKay The teachers and Board of Education work together to try to prepare the young people of today to take their place in our changing world, while the cooks, janitors, and bus drivers serve our meals, clean up after us, and furnish buses for our varied activities. Teachers are not “all work and no play.” Besides teaching the required curriculum, each teacher is an advisor or sponsor for some extra curricular activity which requires extra time and energy. Members of the Board of Education keep in contact with the people in the community and strive to promote better education for our young people. Each member has a big responsibility to both his community and the students whose future may depend upon his decisions. Superintendent Fred R. George Antrobus is John Doe or George Spelvin or you-the average American at grips with a destiny, sometimes sour, sometimes sweet. The Antrobuses have survived fire, flood, pestilence, the seven-year locusts, the ice age, the black pox and the double feature, a dozen wars and as many depressions. They run many a gamut, are as durable as radiators, and look upon the future with a disarming optimism. Alternately bewitched, befuddled and becalmed, they are the stuff of which heroes are made - heroes and buffoons. They are true offspring of Adam and Eve, victims of all the ills that flesh is heir to. They have survived a thousand calamities by the skin of their teeth. Here is a tribute to their indestructibility. SaLT 29 First Row: David West, Jeff Leisner, Larry Rost, Annette Gregory, Pam Adams, Margaret Hendrickson, John Quick, Doug Sims, Jim Crowe. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY JUNIOR PLAY Fifty-five juniors, including cast and crew, presented a full-length comedy, adapted from Leon Weberley, with the air of “a wee bit of the Irish,” McGillicuddy McGotham. It illustrated the dilemma a leprechaun created when he came to visit an American family as an ambassador of the “little people.” McGillicuddy was to prevent a United States airline company from building a landing strip on the property of the “Little People of Ireland.” The country was rescued from a coal and gas shut-out and no-cold Coca Cola by the young O’Conner boy and his slightly illegal essay, for which he won a scholarship presented by the President of the United States. After the strikes were ended, the collaboration of O’Conner and McGillicuddy on the essay explained, and the landing strip moved, all enjoyed a lively St. Patrick’s Day celebration led by one of the “little people:” Timothy Patrick Fergus Kevin Sean Desmond Barry Michale Brian Cormac Dermot Finn Terrance Rory Clancy Casey Danny Eamon Brendon—McGotham! Can’t You See Him? Oh, Well-He’s There by Wanda Brown Could everyone see the leprechaun at the Junior Play? McGillicuddy McGotham cast many spells including one over the audience. Irishmen, young, old and in between joined in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities by following the band and Irish lassies. Concerning the comments of world peace, will we continue to view the world through the spectacles of nationalism, prejudice, distrust and pigheadedness? Or can we somehow learn to remove the spectacles and see things, like the little people? Peppy cheerleaders led active crowds through all football and basketball games. We like to remember close victories, and the “almost” victories; but we would sometimes like to forget hard defeats. There will be future years at A-H where students will excel in track, football, basketball; but there will never be another year like the one which has just ended. 46 1938 ENTRANCE 1968 Lt 8961 996 L SDI131H1V Varsity Squad-First Row: Larry Conner, Ted Lust, Mike Sebens, Doug Whitley, Gary Sebens, Jeff Harshbarger, Lonnie Conner, Tim Burk, Gary Sawyer. Under the leadership of coach Lynn Strack and his assistants Dean Strobel and Skip Romine the 1967 version of the At-wood-Hammond Rajahs began football practice on August 22. Starting off with an easy 27-0 romp over Bethany the Rajahs won their first three games before faltering. The loss to Bement shattered all title hopes. Defeating Newman and then falling to their last three opponents the Rajahs ended with a 4-4 season. The ’67 Rajah version led their opponents in almost all statistics, outscoring them 144 to 124. High point of the season was the hard victory over arch rival Arthur 12-7 which left almost every player and fan voiceless with jubilation. Jeff Harshbarger was the leading Rajah scorer, though he received a disabling knee injury in mid-season. Eric Stephenson was the only Rajah player selected by opposing players to the Okaw all-conference team. 51 First Row: Russel Dukeman, Statistician; Coach Dean Strobel, Jim Libbin, Statistician. A new electric scoreboard was purchased for the football field, shown in the upper left. Next to it is shown the new A-H letter. The design of the letter was changed to add the H to the A. To the left is shown the new fiberglass bankboards. The A-H Rajah banner hangs over the stage. The lower right picture shows loyal A-H Rajah fans at the Okaw Valley tournament. Many clubs and organizations helped to contribute to a student’s memories of the past year. Hard work went into making homecoming and prom a success. No one should forget the crowning of the queen, the dance, and the band. Prom was highlighted by the dinner, dancing, pictures, bowling, breakfast, and the late hours. There are a lot of little things that happened which can be shared only in the private circle of close friends. 1938 HlllilM iur 62 1968 « o FLUTES Patty Rigg, Peggy Schable, Becky Fombelle, Barb Day, Nancy Poindexter, Mary Helfrich, Janice Stirrett, Debbie Bryson, Dale Brandenburg.
