THE POST 1966 Published by the Class of 1966 ATWOOD-HAMMOND HIGH SCHOOL Atwood, Illinois Dedication We, the Class of 1966, dedicate the 1966 POST to the memory of Dr. E. W. Weir. “A man he was to all the country dear ’--Goldsmith “His possible departure, even in retirement, was never truly faced. It was one of those things that COULD NOT happen. “It was locked away with the personal dreads one puts off to face later, if at all. “Even then, and often it was not an actual physical ailment, it was faced with the comforting words and presence of Dr. Weir and his own inimitable flickering smile which assured that things would work out. “He had infinite time and patience for Everyone and Everyone was the most important one at the moment of counseling or the moment of just listening. “Office hours were around the clock with the “office” ranging from the football field to a rumpled bedroom. “The instantaneous hush that fell over the community July 8, 1965, was truly an unspoken eulogy.” —Editorial, AT-TO-HI, October 1, 1965 ADMINISTRATION Administration BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: Robert Scheffer, president: George Kiley, secretary; Ernest Murphy, John Livengood. The room we see is what is customarily described as a living room, but in this house the term is something of an understatement. The every-man-for-himself room would be more like it. For here meals are eaten, plays are written, snakes collected, ballet steps practiced, xylophones played, printing presses operated—if there were room enough there would probably be ice skating. In short, the brood presided over by Martin Vanderhof goes on about the business of living in the fullest sense of the word. From Grandpa Vanderhof down, they are individualists. The Atwood-Hammond Rajah track team was in 8 dual and triangle meets and 5 big meets. With hopes of making a good showing in the conference the Rajahs competed against larger schools in all but two of the dual and triangle meets. 'Hie Rajahs won the two dual meets they had, beating Villa Grove 71-43 and Cerro Gordo 71-56. The hard work in the dual and triangle meets paid off as the Rajahs tied for fourth in the conference. Only three big triangle meets paid off as the Rajahs tied for fourth in the conference. Only three big schools finished ahead of them, Sullivan, Tuscola, and Monticello. Hie Rajahs were third in the county meet and fourth in the small division of the Paris Relays. The track team was led by two senior boys, Dick Beery and Bob Sullender. Dick scored over 100 points and won the 100 and 220 in the conference meet. Bob scored over 70 points, set a record of 12'4 in the pole vault, was third in the broad jump and fourth in the pole vault in the district, and third in the broad jump and fourth in the pole vault in the conference meet. Greg Sims and Alan Cox, also seniors, were consistent point winners. Underclassmen played a large role, too. Steve Black set a record in the two-mile, a new event, running it in 10:20. Bob Rentschler high jumped 6' 3 4”. Gary Chapman ran the 440 in 55:2. Jim Stiehl is closing in on the 880 record by running it in 2:09. Greg Taylor vaulted 11' 4”. Neil Cox ran the 880 in 2:11. Fritz Boll, a freshman, also earned a letter scoring over 20 points during the year. Jeff Harshbarger earned a letter competing in the high hurdles. The three relay teams set records that will stand this year. The frosh 440 relay (Hannon, Fay, Bilbrey, Boll, Jaus) ran the relay in 51:2 seconds. Hie 880 relay (A. Cox, Boll, Jaus, Beery) ran 1:48.2. The mile relay (Personett, N. Cox, A. Cox, Chapman) ran 3:46.2 and got fifth in the conference meet. The Rajahs had a very successful track season, and with only five seniors out of 48 boys, it looks as if the future is very bright in track.
