(Class jHietnru On August 31, 1960, the Atwood-Hammond High School was invaded by 63 scrawny Freshmen. Twenty-nine girls and thirty-four boys started their good 'ole High school days at last. Fleeted president was Aaron Romine; vice-president. Gloria Behrend; secretary, Barry Romine, and treasurer, Judy Briggs. Representing the class on Student Council were Sherlyn Sykes and Gary Sente-ney. Reporters for the AT-TO-HI were Joyce Hen-ningsen and Phil Hadden. Initiation was held early in September and a return party was given April 10, 1961, in the form of a Backward Party. Cheering on the B-team were Brenda Hall and Linda Jumper. Homecoming attendant was Sherry Early Stanley. During the year they lost James Whitlow who withdrew. Moving to other towns were Linda Appleby to Charleston, Gloria Behrend to Areola, Marcia Doenitz to Bement, Rodney Rocha to Grenada, Mississippi, while Bill Gentry transferred to Roosevelt and Terry Lueachtefeld also transferred. Jim Martin lettered in football his first year. Attending music camp were Sheryln Sykes and Phil Hadden. Mrs. Joyce Forsythe Brownfield and Mr. C. E. Rogers were the Freshmen class advisers. Receiving firsts at District Band contests were Phil Hadden, trombone; Sherlyn Sykes, alto sax; and Sandra Boll clarinet. Phil also won first at State. As sophomores, twenty-four girls and twenty-eight boys returned. Barry Romine was elected president; Joyce Henningsen, vice-president; secretary, Aaron Romine; treasurer. Judy Briggs. Student Council representatives were Sherlyn Sykes and Phil Hadden. AT-TO-HI reporters were Phil Hadden and Joyce Henningsen. Re-elected B-Team cheerleaders were Linda Jumper and Brenda Hall, captain. Brenda was also Homecoming attendant. GAA Sweetheart attendant was Judy Chandler. Elected as officers of other clubs were Barry Romine, president of Library Club while Aaron Romine held the vice presidency. GAA treasurer was Barbara Schable Whightsil. Second vice-president of FFA was Paul Brewer. Barry Romine, Willard Kauffman, and Mike Coward lettered in football. Attending cheerleading camp at Normal University were Linda Jumper and Brenda Hall. Sherlyn Sykes and Phil Hadden attended music camp again this year. More movers were Charles Chapman to Decatur and Janet Hayes to Humbolt, Iowa. Raymond Bass, Harold Cornwell, Merle Garrett, Doris Gunter, and Chuck Moseley dropped out. Pat Hale moved here from Glasgow, Kentucky, the last semester. Mrs. Louise Burk Bean and Mr. Don Magee served as class advisers. Susan Smith won the Freshmen-Sophomore Division of the essay What Patriotism Means to Me. She also received third in the district contest. Susan was among six finalists in an area essay contest sponsored by the Rural Electrification Association in Champaign. Winning firsts at District contest were Mike Black, vocal; Barbara Schable Whightsil, drums; David C. Walker, piano; and Phil Hadden, trombone. Receiving first at State were Barbara and Phil. As juniors they numbered twenty girls and twenty-six boys. They gained Mick Cousins and Mike Mauldin, both from Texas, and Grace Mitchell from Ridge Farm. But not returning were Sue Boyd. Kay Buchanan, Evelyn Price. Diana Sanders and David Mitsdarffer. Class officers were Don Hodge, president; Brenda Hall, vice president; Pat Hale, secretary; Connie Lowe, treasurer; Sherlyn Sykes and Aaron Romine served as student council representatives. Elected for varsity cheerleaders were Linda Jumper and Brenda Hall, captain. They also served as twirlers. Sherlyn Sykes represented the class in the Homecoming court. Our homecoming float received a third!! Magazine captains were Joyce Henningsen and Barry Romine. High magazine salesman was Bob Gibson. Taking leads in the class play were Sandra Kay Boll and Mike Black. The play Charm School was presented on November 16, 1962. Aaron Romine was chosen POST editor, Phil Hadden, assistant editor; Brenda Hall, literary editor; advertising manager, Linda Jumper; assistant. Tom Cordts; subscription manager. Chuck Cooch; assistant, Sherlyn Sykes; photographer, Gene Gardner; and adviser Miss Lois Shonkwiler. Lettering in football was Barry Romine, Aaron Romineandjim Martin. Basketball letters were given out to Ramon Wierman, Mike Mauldin and Aaron Romine. Track lettermen were Mike Mauldin and Chuck Cooch. Holding offices in other organizations were GAA. vice president, Barbara Schable Whightsil; Linda Jumper, secretary; FHA vice president, Sue Lowery; secretary, Lenny Kamm; Band; Phil
