1964 Published by the Class of 1964 ATWOOD-HAMMOND HIGH SCHOOL Atwood, Illinois Indication We, the Class of 1964, dedicate THE POST to Mr. Veryl Mauck, retiring board member, whose years of service, 1952 to 1964, coincided with our school years, and to the memory of Mr. Paul Snider, school bus driver from 1958 to 1963. PRESIDEni KEEinEDy nSSflSSinflTED! History Made Friday, Nov. 2 2 by Sandra Boll How President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy were riding down a Texas street on route to Market Place, Nov. 22 where President Kennedy was to have made a speech, will be in history books in years to come. Shooting of the President and Texas Governor George Connally will be the prime point. It will include the long suspense-packed thirty minutes waiting for the report from the hospital. Within two hours the Inaugural oath had been given in the presidential plane to Lyndon B. Johnson. Television and movies have recorded the removal of the body to Bethesda hospital, the placing of the coffin in the East room, its removal to the Rotunda of the capitol building, tne long procession to St. Mathews' church with representatives of 33 countries marching behind the caisson. ---j— — Closing the four days of j _j _ mourning was the lighting of the torch at Arlington Cemetery and taps. First Lady Gives Lesson In Serenity From time to time we have been almost irritated at the restraints of parents and teachers. Speak softly. No gum. 'Wear becoming skirts and walk like a lady. Sometimes I've wondered if they'd forgotten what it was like to be a teen. This weekend as I watched the poise, grace, serenity— and a3 the London papers put it, majesty-of Jacqueline Kennedy, I realize what teachers and parents had in mind for us. Let us hope they are successful. (by Sue Blaney) UUe fHustflot Falter Atwood-Hammond High School, Atwood, Illinois Vol. xxvm No. 6_________________________ Nov. 27, 1963 In the wake of this great tragedy, no matter how great it may be, Americans cannot stand still. We are led onward by the hand of Father Time who, being the killer that he is, goes on ungrieved by the incident. We must look toward the front and continue in the proud American way as we have done before. Mr. Time will not stop on his way, trampling other sung, as well as unsung, heroes in his path beneath his feet. We must hold our heads up and push this terrible thing to the backs of our minds. We must not, we cannot falter now. (Mike Mauldin) fill for One-One for fill by Sandra Boll Americans have been reminded many times during the past few days, It is not what our country can do for us, but what we can do for our country. As students this statement can be applied to the school in that it is not what the school can do for U3, but what we can do for our school. How much should we expect from our school? Should it take the place of a glorified babysitter? Should it take the responsibility for- the student s motive in getting an education, constantly nudging the pupils to study and to do their homework? Or i3 it the responsibility of the student to take care of his own discipline so that A-HHS has a reputation for having mature, well-behaved teenagers. Should he set his own academic goals and the school's and feel pride in having neighboring schools compliment the school on the scholastic status of A-HHSers? We believe our A-HKJ students are mature enough to make the name of the school rather than having the school make pupils conform. fjr. ti Wv jyZW ' Vo V ' y y ' A ' v 7 ' y Ys ' 7 y dy . Don Quixote was a gaunt, book-crazed idealist who went out to right the wrongs of the world to the dismay of his ignorant rustic friend, Sancho Panza, a realist. From Don Quixote comes the term quixotic meaning dreamy and impractical and obsessed with a bee in his bonnet. ” CAST Antonia (Gaye Jurgens) Josofina (Jane Born) Teresa (Susan Schable) Sanchita (Patsy Reisner) Alicia (Sherry Wait) Villager (Cindy Murphy) City Girl (Sandy Simmons) City Girl (Sue Pederson) City Girl (Sandy Rees) Arts boys build windmill for Don Quixote to Fight. Villagers Dance. Juniors in the Don Quixote cast were a dejected lot. They had to cancel their class play. Knee surgery for Don Quixote himself. John Sellable, caused the first postponement from the Friday before Thanksgiving. Craig Chapman's broken foot caused a second postponement. Rehearsal schedules had already posed a problem with the opening of the basketball season and two nights a week for high school games and one night a week for a grade school game. To this busy schedule a second church night was added to the Wednesday church night already observed. Since so many high school students were participating in the program, this night was not available. All in all, the first possible production date was moved so far down the calendar that it would conflict with both senior play practice and the spring music contest. So, Don Quixote and his players moved back into the Middle Ages, oblivion, or what have you.
