Cbu fiistMq On August 31, 1959, thirty boys and twenty girls entered A-HHS as freshmen. Chic Born was elected president; Cindy Livengood, vice-president; and Gene Burcham, secretary-treasurer. Representing the class on the Student Council were Sharon Ponder and Rick Phalen. On the AT-TO-HI staff as reporters were Nancy Montgomery and Richard Beaty. Cindy Livengood was junior varsity cheerleader and Sharon Ponder, homecoming attendant for that year, chose Chic Born as her escort. That year, the class of '63 lost Michael Cousins to Borger, Texas; Diane and Myron Farris to Areola; Patricia Ann Miller to Newman; and Mary Lou Schuch-mann to Bement. The freshmen class lost four members who dropped out. Jan Wait joined the class from Oakland and Mick Moseley from Haysville, Kansas. Lynn Coward lettered in football the first year. Initiation was held October 27, 1959; and a return party was given April 18, 1960 in the form of a Sadie Hawkins Masquerade. Class advisers were Miss Joyce Forsythe and Mr. C.E. Rogers. In September, 1960, only forty members returned as sophomores. Nelson Stanley served as president; with Sharon Ponder, vice-president; Nancy Montgomery, secretary; Gene Burcham. treasurer; and Howard Eskridge and Jo Ellen Wilson, AT-TO-HI reporters. Representatives to the Student Council were Rick Phalen and Cindy Livengood. Cindy Livengood was captain of the junior varsity cheering squad and Jo Ellen Wilson was substitute. Jo Ellen was also elected homecoming attendant. Betty Fleener held the office of secretary for the library club as a sophomore. Chic Born, Lynn Coward, Curtis Hall, and Rick Phalen lettered in football, and Curtis lettered in basketball. Chic lettered in track along with George Hatchel. Curtis Hall also received honorable mention in the conference for both basketball and football and received the Phalen Award in football. As sophomores, Janet Burklow joined the class from Cutler, Illinois, and Mary Lou Schuchmann returned from Bement. Chet Chambers moved to Tuscola, and three dropped out. Steve Blain and Nancy Montgomery attended Music Camp that summer. Sophomore advisers were Mrs. Louise Bean and Mr. Don Magee. Numbering 43. the juniors returned to elect Rick Phalen, president; Chic Born, vice-president; Janet Burklow, secretary; and Gene Burcham, treasurer. Student Council representatives were Sharon Ponder and Nelson Stanley. Also serving on the Student Council were Cindy Livengood as president; Rick Phalen as secretary; and Chic Born as treasurer. Nancy Montgomery, junior AT-TO-HI reporter, became editorial editor. Sharon Ponder and Cindy Livengood were varsity cheerleaders. Sharon Ponder was also Sweetheart attendant. Janet Burklow, homecoming attendant, chose Ralph Gunter, as escort. Also in the court as escorts were Curtis Hall, Rick Phalen. and Gale Luck. The juniors had nine football lettermen, two basketball lettermen and four track lettermen. Receiving all-conference honorable mention for football were Curtis Hall, Rick Phalen, and Chic Born. Lynn Coward received all-conference, all area, and honorable mention for Little All-State. In basketball, Curtis Hall received the rebound trophy. That year, Josie Chapman moved to Decatur and three dropped out. The junior class sponsored the annual prom at the Hotel Orlando in Decatur with the theme Wonderland by Night”. Howard Eskridge had the lead in the junior play, The Boy Who Changed The World. Elected to the junior POST staff were Janice Kellogg, editor; Steve Blain, assistant editor; Betty Fleener. subscription manager; Darlene Capps, business manager; Sharon Ponder, advertising manager; Janet Burklow. literary editor; and Howard Eskridge and Roger Leisner as photographers. Serving as F. F. A. president was Rick Phalen while Gene Burcham served as treasurer of the organization. Chic Born was elected vice-president of the band. Linda Bishop was chosen to attend Girls' State and Chic Born, Boys' State.

As seniors, only thirty-three returned to A-HHS. Class officers were Chic Born, president; Curtis Hall, vice-president; Sharon Ponder, secretary; andGeneBur-cham, treasurer. Janet Burklow and John Sims were representatives to the student council, with seniors Rick Phalen. Sharon Ponder, Chic Born, and Gale Luck serving as student council president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. Nancy Montgomery was again editorial editor of the AT-TO-HI with Richard Beaty as sports editor, and Linda Bishop and Jan Wait as senior reporters. Steve Blain became editor of THE POST and Ralph Senteney and Gene Burcham filled the vacancies of subscription manager and business manager. Sharon Ponder, Reba Grayhem, and Cindy Liven-good were on the varsity cheering squad. Curtis Hall, homecoming king, crowned Sharon Ponder as Queen. Grand March leaders were Reba Grayhem, Cindy Livengood, Rick Phalen and Chic Born. Linda Bishop, the senior attendant, chose Rick Scheffer as her escort. Betty Fleener was president of the Library Club, Sharon Ponder, the G. A. A.; and Linda Bishop the F. H. A. Rick Phalen was president of the F. F. A. with Sam Mahannah, vice-president; Gene Burcham, secretary; and Rick Wierman, treasurer. At the F. H. A. -F. F. A. Christmas Dance, Rick Phalen was Snow Prince with seniors Linda Bishop, Janet Burklow, Janice Kellogg, Rick Wierman, and Gene Burcham as members of the court. Howard Eskridge served as the band president with Richard Beaty as secretary. From the senior class were eleven football letter-men. five basketball lettermen and four track lettermen. Football all-conference were Curtis Hall, Lynn Coward, Chic Born, and Rick Phalen. Curt Hall and Chic Born were All-State honorable mention while Lynn Coward received All-Area and Little All-State. In basketball, Curtis Hall received the rebound trophy. Richard Beaty and John Sims received Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Foundation. Richard also was the recipient of a Rector Scholarship. Receiving monetary scholarships fcom Illinois State Scholarship Commission were Nancy Montgomery and Eugene Burcham while Richard Beaty, Chic Born, and John Sims received honorary scholarships. In their last year, the seniors lost two members of their class. The Senior Play, A Thurber Carnival , was given on May 17. The seniors were honored at the annual prom by the juniors on May 3. The prom was held at the Hotel Orlando in Decatur with the theme Hello, Young Lovers”. Class advisers were Miss Lois Shonkwiler and Mr. James Carney. On May 27, the seniors had their last get-together at the McCormick's Creek State Park at Spencer, Indiana. Baccalaureate was May 26. At Graduation exercises on May 29, Richard Beaty was valedictorian, with Chic Born and Howard Eskridge as co-salutatorians.
