Fourty-three seniors entered A.H.S. for the last year. They elected Dave Harshbarger, class president; John Collins, vice-president; Maryan Stratman, secretary-treasurer; Margaret Chandler and Fred Cordts, student council representatives, and Gaila Dewees, reporter. Linda Rivers was selected AT-TO-H1 production editor, and Dave Harsh' barger was sports editor. Heidi Sonderegger from Switzerland joined the class as the first exchange student. Fran Luck and Ann Morgan were cheerleading co-captains, and Linda Rivers was on the varsity squad. Homecoming queen was Gwenda Can, who was crowned by the king, Mike Jurgens. The grand March was led by Heidi Sonderegger and Ron Sanders. Ruthann Wright was senior attendant. Majorette of the marching band was Fran Luck and twirlers were Ruthann Wright, Carole Davis, Ann Morgan and Jean Smith. Reigning as king and queen of the Sweetheart ball were Fred Cordts and Helen Blaney. Margaret Chandler and Mike Jurgens were in the court. For the fourth consecutive year Owen Funk received a first at both district and state music contest on his drum solo. Mary Aliena Crowder was selected to attend Illinois State Music Activity in Chicago. They were well represented as officers in other organizations. Helen Blaney was G. A. A. president; Jean Smith, G.A.A. vice-president; Mary an Stratman, G.A.A. secretary; Margaret Chandler, F. H.A. president, Sharon Hall, F.H. A. vice-president; Maryan Stratman, F.H. A. secretary; Gaila Dewees, F.H. A. treasurer; Rita Robey, F.H. A. student council representative; Doug Romine, F.F. A. vice-president; Dan Harshbarger, F.F. A. treasurer; Owen Funk, band president; Wes Yoachum, student council vice-president; and Dave Harshbarger, library club secretary. The conclusion of football season found Mike Jurgens All-Conference tackle, and Most Valuable Player; Owen Funk, Honorable Mention, Okaw All-Conference tackle, and Ron Sanders, Special Mention All-Conference fullback and winner of the Defensive Tackle award. He and Mike Jurgens were co-captains. Besides these two, other lettermen were Owen Funk, Doug Romine and Wes Yoachum. When basketball season rolled around Mike Jurgens was on the Okaw All-Tournament team and again won the free throw trophy. This year the team placed second at the Monticello Holiday Tournament and third in the Okaw tournament. The team had the best record in 16 years with 18 wins and 9 losses. Fred Cordts received Special Mention All-Conference and Mike Jurgens was selected first team All-Conference. Senior lettermen were Mike Jurgens , Owen Funk, Fred Cordts, Ronnie Sanders and John Collins. Dave Harshbarger served as manager for the last three years. In track John Collins broke the A.H.S. record for the half-mile, running it in 2 minutes, 7 seconds. Carl Harshbarger tied the school record in the pole vault going 11'6' The seven track lettermen were Mike Jurgens, Carl Harshbarger, Dan Harshbarger, John Collins, Owen Funk, Ron Sanders, and Wes Yoachum. Receiving the D. A.R. award was Maryan Stratman, and Mike Jurgens won the S.A.R. award. In F.F. A. Dan Harshbarger won the Dekalb award. For his achievement in band, Owen Funk received the Arion award, presented by the Lions Club. Leaving school this year was Kathy Upright. On May 4 they presented their class play, Pioneer, Go Home. Wes Yoachum as Toby Kwimper, Don Henneberry as his Pop , and Rita Robey as Holly Smith had leads as a family on relief trying to out-smart the government. Everyone in the class participated in some way in the play. The seniors were honored by the juniors at the prom held at the Hotel Orlando in Decatur, May 11. Winning scholastic honors were Owen Funk, valedictorian, and co-salutatorians were Fred Cordts, Mike Jurgens and Linda Rivers. National Honor Society members were Dave Harshbarger, Linda Rivers, Owen Funk, Mike Jurgens, Fred Cordts, Wes Yoachum, and Maryan Stratman. For a last get-together the class spent May 28 at Shafer Lake, Monticello, Indiana. Baccalaureate services were May 27, and commencement exercises were May 29.
