Fourty-three seniors entered A.H.S. for the last year. They elected Dave Harshbarger, class president; John Collins, vice-president; Maryan Stratman, secretary-treasurer; Margaret Chandler and Fred Cordts, student council representatives, and Gaila Dewees, reporter. Linda Rivers was selected AT-TO-H1 production editor, and Dave Harsh' barger was sports editor. Heidi Sonderegger from Switzerland joined the class as the first exchange student. Fran Luck and Ann Morgan were cheerleading co-captains, and Linda Rivers was on the varsity squad. Homecoming queen was Gwenda Can, who was crowned by the king, Mike Jurgens. The grand March was led by Heidi Sonderegger and Ron Sanders. Ruthann Wright was senior attendant. Majorette of the marching band was Fran Luck and twirlers were Ruthann Wright, Carole Davis, Ann Morgan and Jean Smith. Reigning as king and queen of the Sweetheart ball were Fred Cordts and Helen Blaney. Margaret Chandler and Mike Jurgens were in the court. For the fourth consecutive year Owen Funk received a first at both district and state music contest on his drum solo. Mary Aliena Crowder was selected to attend Illinois State Music Activity in Chicago. They were well represented as officers in other organizations. Helen Blaney was G. A. A. president; Jean Smith, G.A.A. vice-president; Mary an Stratman, G.A.A. secretary; Margaret Chandler, F. H.A. president, Sharon Hall, F.H. A. vice-president; Maryan Stratman, F.H. A. secretary; Gaila Dewees, F.H. A. treasurer; Rita Robey, F.H. A. student council representative; Doug Romine, F.F. A. vice-president; Dan Harshbarger, F.F. A. treasurer; Owen Funk, band president; Wes Yoachum, student council vice-president; and Dave Harshbarger, library club secretary. The conclusion of football season found Mike Jurgens All-Conference tackle, and Most Valuable Player; Owen Funk, Honorable Mention, Okaw All-Conference tackle, and Ron Sanders, Special Mention All-Conference fullback and winner of the Defensive Tackle award. He and Mike Jurgens were co-captains. Besides these two, other lettermen were Owen Funk, Doug Romine and Wes Yoachum. When basketball season rolled around Mike Jurgens was on the Okaw All-Tournament team and again won the free throw trophy. This year the team placed second at the Monticello Holiday Tournament and third in the Okaw tournament. The team had the best record in 16 years with 18 wins and 9 losses. Fred Cordts received Special Mention All-Conference and Mike Jurgens was selected first team All-Conference. Senior lettermen were Mike Jurgens , Owen Funk, Fred Cordts, Ronnie Sanders and John Collins. Dave Harshbarger served as manager for the last three years. In track John Collins broke the A.H.S. record for the half-mile, running it in 2 minutes, 7 seconds. Carl Harshbarger tied the school record in the pole vault going 11'6' The seven track lettermen were Mike Jurgens, Carl Harshbarger, Dan Harshbarger, John Collins, Owen Funk, Ron Sanders, and Wes Yoachum. Receiving the D. A.R. award was Maryan Stratman, and Mike Jurgens won the S.A.R. award. In F.F. A. Dan Harshbarger won the Dekalb award. For his achievement in band, Owen Funk received the Arion award, presented by the Lions Club. Leaving school this year was Kathy Upright. On May 4 they presented their class play, Pioneer, Go Home. Wes Yoachum as Toby Kwimper, Don Henneberry as his Pop , and Rita Robey as Holly Smith had leads as a family on relief trying to out-smart the government. Everyone in the class participated in some way in the play. The seniors were honored by the juniors at the prom held at the Hotel Orlando in Decatur, May 11. Winning scholastic honors were Owen Funk, valedictorian, and co-salutatorians were Fred Cordts, Mike Jurgens and Linda Rivers. National Honor Society members were Dave Harshbarger, Linda Rivers, Owen Funk, Mike Jurgens, Fred Cordts, Wes Yoachum, and Maryan Stratman. For a last get-together the class spent May 28 at Shafer Lake, Monticello, Indiana. Baccalaureate services were May 27, and commencement exercises were May 29.

Class History In September, 1958, the class of 1962, which numbered 52, began their high school days. They elected Mike Jurgens class president; Helen Blaney, vice-president; Fran Luck, secretary-treasurer; Linda Van Vleet and Wesley Yoachum, student council representatives; and John Collins and Linda Rivers, AT-TO-HI reporters. They were initiated on September 30. Sue Bolin and Ann Morgan were elected reserve cheerleaders. Gwen Andrews was elected homecoming attendant. They gave the seniors a return party on April 1. Carl Harshbarger lettered in track his first year. During the year they gained David Hutton from Jamaica. Marsha Dennis from Arthur, and Ray Wilhelm from Tuscola. They lost Wendell Galladay, Virginia Bragg and Barbara Hall who withdrew. John Johnson moved to Mt. Zion, Marsha Dennis and James Voltenburg transferred to Arthur, and Linda Van-Vleet moved to Hoopeston. That summer Mary Aliena Crowder and Owen Funk attended Egyptian Music Camp. As sophomores, 46 returned. Dave Harshbarger was elected class president; Helen Blaney, vice-president; Maryan Stratman, secretary-treasurer; Sue Bolin and Wes Yoachum, student council representatives; and Ann Morgan and Mike Jurgens, reporters. Twirling for the band was Fran Luck. Re-elected reserve cheerleaders were Ann Morgan and Sue Bolin. Ann was also homecoming attendant. Fran Luck and Sue Bolin were in the Sweetheart court. G. A. A. vice-president was Helen Blaney. Mike Jurgens lettered in football and basketball and won the free throw trophy. He received Okaw Special Mention all-conference in basketball. Winning letters in track were David Hutton, John Collins, Doug Romine, Mike Jurgens, Owen Funk and Carl Harshbarger. InF.F.A. Don Henne-berry received the Best Crop award. That year they gained Brad Scott from Decatur, Linda Wright from Cerro Gordo, and Linda Van Vleet came back from Hoopeston. They lost David Hutton to Bismarck; Brad Scott to Decatur; Gwen Andrews to Chester, Virginia; Myron Farris to Areola, and John Gharst to Villa Grove. As juniors they numbered 47. That year Sue Bolin, Deanna Gough, and Viola Bragg didn't return to school. Class officers were Wes Yoachum, president; Mike Jurgens, vice-president; Ralph Corky High, secret ary-treasurer, Margaret Chandler and Wesley Yoachum, student council representatives; and Maryan Stratman, reporter. Ann Morgan, Fran Luck, and Sharon Hall were elected cheerleaders. Twirlers were Carole Davis, Fran Luck and Ruthann Wright. Margaret Chandler represented the class in the homecoming court. Magazine sales captains were Gwenda Carr and John Collins, and Harold Ponder was high salesman. Don Henneberry and Harold Ponder had leads in the class play, The Inner Willey. Linda Rivers was chosen POST editor, Gaila Dewees, assistant editor; Maryan Stratman, literary editor; Ann Morgan, business manager; Dave Harshbarger, subscription manager; Rita Robey, advertising manager; and Harold Ponder and Corky High were Photographers. The same staff served as seniors. Jean Smith was Girls State delegate and Dan Harshbarger attended Boys State. Don Henneberry had the lead in the drama play, Little Black Sambo . They hosted the seniors to the prom at the Redwood in Decatur with the theme, Moonlight and Roses. They gained Ronnie Sanders from Areola and Bob Wilson from Champaign. Bob later moved to California. Sondra Edwards and John Martin dropped out. Football lettermen were Doug Romine, Ron Sanders, Mike Jurgens, Owen Funk and Fred Cordts. Receiving Honorable Mention in the Okaw conference were Ron Sanders, fullback, and Mike Jurgens, quarterback. During the basketball season John Collins won the free throw trophy and Mike Jurgens was on the Okaw All-Conference second team. Fred Cordts, Ronnie Sanders, John Collins, Mike Jurgens, and Owen Funk were lettermen. In track Dan Harshbarger, Carl Harshbarger, Doug Romine, Mike Jurgens, Ronnie Sanders and John Collins received letters. Gaila Dewees won the Facit typewriting contest, and Maryan Stratman won the O.G. A. shorthand award. As juniors they held offices in other organizations: Helen Blaney, G.A.A. president; Jean Smith, G.A.A. vice-president; Ann Morgan, G.A.A. secretary; Sharon Hall, G.A.A. reporter; Maryan Stratman, G.A.A. student council representative; Margaret Chandler, F.H. A. secretary; Owen Funk, band vice-president; Mary Aliena Crowder, band secretary; Dave Harshbarger, library club president; and Dan Harshbarger, F.F.A. treasurer. Several attended camps that year: Wes Yoachum and Ruthann Wright, Egyptian Music Camp; Terry Dick, Allerton Art Camp; and Ann Morgan and Helen Blaney, G.A.A. camp.
