As freshmen, they were initiated without pity, but for some reason they didn’t give the seniors a return party. The class elected Leroy Powell as president for that year; Darlene Heit, vice president; Janet Greve, secretary and treasurer; Anne Brown and Tom Reedy, class reporters; and Gerald Alexander and Bonnie Wilson, student council representatives. Jacki Canull and Peggy Pegler were elected B team cheerleaders; Darlene Heit, drum majorette for band; and Martha Appleby was chosen as freshmen attendant for homecoming. Tom Reedy and Darlene Heit won first at the state band contest. Four class members left that year: Michael Batchelder to Decatur, James Daughtery to Bement, Kay Pruitt to Mahomet, and Terry Stillabower dropped out. John Provine moved back from Ohio. For the sophomore year, Leroy Powell was again elected president; Darlene Heit, vice-president; TomBeh-rend, secretary and treasurer; Anna Brown and Tom Reedy, class reporters; and Judy Harrison, student council representative. That year, they lost eight more members. Lloyd Anderson, Mary Ann Beatty, and Steve Rahn moved to Tuscola; James Brown to Unity; Phyllis Dennis to Arthur; Gladys Fentress to Kentucky; and Creta and Lois Jean Conour quit. They gained five more members though: Ron Hooker came from Bement, Gary Day from Fairfield, Judy Dallas from Tuscola, Roger Bums from Decatur. Daral Carr came from Mechanicsburg but left the same year, Wayne Wilhelm came from Tuscola and also left again that year. The sophomore homecoming window won first that year. Jacki Canull was B team cheerleader and Darlene Heit drum majorette. Jacki Canull was elected homecoming attendant. Larry Green won the FFA Phalen memorial award. Tom Reedy and Peggy Pegler won first with their solos in the state contest. As juniors, they elected Gary Day as president; Ron Hooker as vice president; Carolyn Oye, secretary and treasurer; Bonnie Bowen and Tom Reedy, class reporters; and Janet Greve student council representative. During the junior year they lost Bonnie Bowen to Maryland, and Viola Bragg, Judy Crist, Deanna Gough, and Carolyn Oye dropped out. Judy Harrison was chosen to attend Girl’s State and Bob Dallas was chosen to attend Boy’s State. Janet Greve was homecoming attendant. The junior window won first place for homecoming. Jacki Canull and Darlene Heit were varsity cheerleaders. Darlene was also a twirler for band. Tom Reedy and Peggy Pegler again won firsts on their state solos. Ellen Wacaser. Gerald Alexander, Roger Burns and Darlene Heit had leads in the junior class play. ”We Were Young That Year.” Roger Burns Tom Behrend, Jerry Wildman, Bob Dallas, Ron Hooker, Leroy Powell and David Garret played on the varsity football squad. Tom Behrend. Gary Day and Allen Jumper played on the varsity basketball squad. Jacki Canull was attendant for the GAA Sweetheart Dance and Carolyn Oye was queen. Bonnie Brown had a lead in the drama play “Hansel and Gretel.” Ellen Wacaser was high salesman for the junior magazine sales. Elected to POST staff were Judy Harrison as editor; Anna Brown, assistant editor; Tom Behrend, sports editor; Darlene Heit, literary editor; Leroy Powell, subscription and advertising manager; Janice Fisher, business manager; and Butch Fisher and Tom Reedy, photographers. The theme for the Prom was “Paradise of the Deep.” It was held at the YMCA in Decatur. As seniors the class entered AHS for the last year. Ron Hooker was elected president; Jerry Wildman. vice president; Janice Fisher, secretary and treasurer; Tom Behrend, student council representative; and Butch Fisher and Judy Harrison as class reporters. Jacki Canull and Darlene Heit were elected as varsity cheerleaders. Jacki was captain of the squad. Darlene was drum majorette for the band and Peggy Pegler was a twirler. Homecoming queen, Darlene Heit, was crowned by king Tom Behrend. Jacki Canull and Leroy Powell were chosen grand march leaders and Anna Brown was senior attendant. Beverly Black was production editor for AT-TO-HI and Ellen Wacaser was editorial editor. Beverly Black received the DAR award, and Gerald Alexander the SAR award. He also won the Arion Award presented by the Lion’s Club and was salutatorian of the class with Darlene Heit as valedictorian. That year the seniors gave Charlie's Aunt for their senior play. Albert “Butch” Fisher played the lead, the imposter of Charlie’s Aunt, and Tom Behrend and Gerald Alexander were the supporting leads. The play was given May 12. The seniors were honored by the juniors at the annual prom held at the Redwood Restaurant in Decatur, April 28. In basketball Tom Behrend received the rebound trophy award. Peggy Pegler and Tom Reedy both received first at district and state solo contests. Chosen for the National Honor Society were Janet Greve, Judy Harrison, Darlene Heit, Gerald Alexander, and Larry Green. In FFA, Larry Green received two outstanding awards. The DeKalb and Grain awards. The seniors took their last fling on May 26 and 27 when they traveled to Shakamak, Indiana, for their trip.
