class HISTZOQ It was a big adventurous day in September, 1955, as nineteen sharp-eyed freshman girls and thirty ''look-out-for-the-senior boys entered the school doors of A.H.S. Fred Whobrey was elected their freshman presi- dent, while Dennis Behrend served as vice-president, and Bruce Kellogg, secretary-treasurer. Judy Blain and Kenneth Raymond were AT-TO-HI reporters. Bob Beery and Rosalind Cordts were student council representatives. Sue Pruitt was chosen freshman homecoming attendant. They lived through initiation day and the evening that followed surprisingly well. Now they were officially members of A.H.S. That year they lost Freddie Bishop, who moved to Hindsboro, Lonnie Sparr and Leonard Spencer to Urbana, Ruth Winkleman to Decatur, Larry Luechten- feld to Chicago, and Norman Moseley, Delia Conour, and Richard Trarnmel, who dropped out. They gained Dean Vice from Tuscola, Lavonne Wagener from Warrensburg, Missouri, Janice Bur- cham from Niantic, and Paul Osborne from Decatur. In April they were host to the seniors at the freshman return party. Mrs. Louise Bean and Mrs. Ervilla Lapointe served as advisers. As the doors closed in May, 1956, they were soon to open to forty-five sophomores in September. They gained Larry Luechtenfeld in January once more, but lost him again inFebruary to Tuscola, They also lost Kenny Raymond, who moved to Villa Grove, and Clarence Hayes and Jesse Sanderson, who dropped out. As sophomores, they elected Charles Greve as president, Carolyn Sims, vice-president, and Susanna Burgener, secretary-treasurer. Sue Pruitt was student council representative. Donna Brovm and Bob Mauck were AT-TO-HI representatives. Marlys Dallas and J anice Burcham were elected cheerleaders. Judy Blain was sophomore homecoming attendant. Mr. Kenneth Darner and Mr. David Dunscomb served as class advisers. Upon entering A.H.S. as juniors, they numbered forty-one. Officers elected were Joe Morgan, president, Joe Sanders, vice-president, Brenda Luck, treasurer, and Janice Burcham, secretary. Margaret Rees was student council representative. Robert Phalen and Bob Beery served as reporters on the AT-TO-HI staff. Faculty advisers were Mrs. IreneDavenport and Mr. David Dunscomb. Janice Burcham was the lone junior on thevarsity cheerleading squad. One junior entered during the year, Rod Meadows from West Minister, Colorado. Rosalind Cordts, Fred Whobrey, and Gaylord Myers played leading roles in the junior class play, Our Town. The American Legion chose Bob Beery to attend Boys' State. Margaret Rees was chosen as homecoming junior attendant. Joe Sanders won the free-throw trophy for the first time. Ronnie Gaskill and Rosalind Cordts were winning soloists in the State contest. Judy Tharp was chosen editor of THE POST: Joe Morgan, assistant editor, Joe Sanders, sports editor, F red Whobrey, literary editor, Dennis Behrend, business manager, Carolyn Sims, picture editor,Janet Mayberry, advertising manager, and Brenda Luck, subscription manager. Miss Lois Shonkwiler andMr. Otto Ariens served as advisers to the POST staff. Junior POST staff automatically served as senior staff the following year. Joe Sanders was one of the high point scorers as the Rajahs won the Okaw valley track meet. Dennis Behrend and Bill Beatty also were members of the champion squad. Mardi Gras was the theme of the prom at the Champaign Elks Lodge on May 2. That year they lost Sue Pruitt, who moved to Seymour, and Billie Cornwell, who joined the service. Before long they re-entered as seniors number- ing thirty-nine. For them, it was a year of decision. This time it was their turn to initiate the freshmen. Bruce Kellogg was chairman of the day committee and Bob Beery, night committee. Class officers were Bob Mauck, president, Tom Mosbarger, vice-president, Margaret Rees, sec- retary, and Paul Osborne, treasurer. Miss Lois Shonkwiler and Mr. Otto Ariens were class advisers. Janice Burcham was the lone senior serving as varsity cheerleader. Judy Blain was crowned homecoming queen by King Bob Beery. Donna Brown was senior attendant. Rosalind Cordts and Judy Blain were co-editors on the editorial staff of the AT-TO-HI, with Donna Brown assisting and Fred Whobrey as sports editor. Gaylord Myers was production editor. H.M.S. Pinafore was given as their senior class play. Bob Beery received the free-throw trophy and Rosalind Cordts, the Arion award. Joe Sanders received three athletic letters -- football, basketball, and track, Bruce Kellogg, Fred Whobrey, and Bob Beery received two--football and basketball, Dennis Behrend won two--football and track. Chosen for the National Honor Society were Janice Burcham, Judy Blain, Donna Brown, Rosalind Cordts, and Bruce Kellogg. They lost Bill Beatty, who moved to Tuscola, and Judy Tharp, Donald Chenoweth, and Bill Upright, who dropped out.
