SENIOR PLAYS I cou1dn't get a duck. Go ahead, Jah 'im! It's a monkey! I'l1 take on every one of y ez ' HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS In this play, the author probes the illusions and hopes of a group of derelicts spending the night in Central Park. Writing with insight and understanding the author has created a beautiful and moving play out of the attempts of a band of vagabonds to snare a duck for their dinner in a nearby lake, You were reminded that hope burns bright even in the sorriest of men, Charlie ..... ..... . . . . . This is where the man was killedl CLASS HISTORY ln a mad scramble all fifty-two freshmen found seats in the large study hall looking scared and be- wildered. In spite of the difficulties of making new acquaintances they managed to elect Beverly Wilson, presidentg Kenneth Sawyer, vice-presidentg and Ed Belcher, secretary-treasurer, Joan Bryson and Ed Parsons, student council representatives for the fresh- man year. Mrs. Louise Bean and Mrs. Rosanna Rayburn were their advisers. Karen Mayfield and Daplyn Snyder were elected cheerleaders. Beverly Wilson served as attendant to thehome- coming queen. The seniors did a thorough job of initiating them, and they became members of A.H.s. with cheers and laughter ringing in their ears. Butin return they sponsored a party with Hit Parade as the theme. Their class had made its mark. Honors were awarded when Daplyn Snyder was chosen Queen of the G.A.A. Valentine dance and the student body chose Beverly Wilson the rnost typical co-ed. Then quietly the doors shut for a brief intermission. Older and wiser they thought, they entered the doors of A.H.S. as sophomores. Gary Pruitt served as presidentg Bob Long, vice-presidentg Karen Mayfield, secretary-treasurerg Joan Bryson and Ronald Alexander, student council representatives. Mr, Lile and Mrs. Dorothy O'Neil were their ad- visers. Beverly Wilson and Joyce Wilhelm were elected cheerleaders. Karen Mayfield was the sophomore homecoming attendant. Linda Bryson and Daplyn Snyder were chosen G.A.A. delegates to attend East Bay Camp for G.A.A. leadership. Charlene Wilson was awarded an art scholarship to attend camp at Allerton. They chose their class rings and adjourned for the summer. They elected Ed Belcher, presidentg Bob Canull, vice-president, Beverly Wilson, secretary, Daplyn Snyder, treasurerg Joan Bryson and James Crowe, student council representatives for their junior year. Mrs. Irene Davenport and Mr. Les Gadbury were their class advisers. Daplyn Snyder was elected cheerleader. They brought their gtuis and ten gallon hats to present Girl Crazy. Their magazine sales were surprisingly good - S'pl,850,00, with Mike Stratman high salesman. The junior boys helped to win the Rajahs a co-championship with Arcola in the 1955 Okaw Valley Conference Football competition. Gary Pruitt reigned as King at the G.A,A. Sweetheart ball. Gay Paree was the theme of their prom at the Hotel Orlando in Decatur, April 27, in honor of the seniors, June Evans was awarded the art scholarship at Allerton Mansion. The American Legion chose Daplyn Snyder to attend Girls State and Ronald Sims to Boys State. Then off to camps, jobs, and home to pass the time until they were to return as rulers of A,H,S, Proudly they entered school with an evil look in their eyes for the freshmen. Kenneth Sawyer was presidentg Harold McDade, vice-presidentg Charles Brownfield, secretaryg Linda Bryson, treasurerg Mar- jorie Barcus, and James Crowe, student council representativesg Joan Bryson, student council pres- ident. They managed to give the freshmen a rough time during initiation with Daplyn Snyder, day chair- man, and Gary Pruitt, night chairman, for the occasion. The student body chose Daplyn Snyder cheer- leader and Homecoming Queen with Gary Pruitt, crowner. Beverly Wilson and Harold McDade led the Grand March after Harold won a toss of a coin with Bob Canull for the honor. Joan Bryson was elected by the class as senior attendant, ' Marjorie Barcus worked hard as the alitor of the POST. Senior girls presented Twelve Angry Women, a serious drama, with the help of Larry Quick and John Hamilton. Eight boys gave a comedy named Hope is a Thing With Feathers. Both casts worked hard but enjoyed the success of their final performance. Beverly Wilson won the D.A.R. awardg Ed Belcher, the Arion awardg and Ronnie Alexander, the Dekalb award. Ed Belcher, Joan Bryson, Linda Bryson, Ed Parsons, Daplyn Snyder and Beverly Wilson were chosen for the National Honor Society. Many of the class members have served as various officers of the many organizations around school and they are proud of the members as every other class has been, During their years at A.rLS, they lost many of the class members, some married, others moved away or quit school. But in spite of this they also gained a few students: .Tune Evans, Don McLeod, Larry Whobrey, and Dave Hanners. Commencement exercises were planned with Ed Belcher as valedictoriang Ed Parsons, salutator- iang Larry Quick, class historiang and Kenneth Sawyer, class prophet, Most of the senior class took a vacation to the Ozarks and returned in a worst condition but with many happy memories. May 29, 1957, they took the final march through A.PLS. gYrn. Dressed in blue gowns with white tassels they looked back over those four short years with sad hearts but ready to face the new life ahead. They celebrated graduation with a short party after- wards before each took his chosen path. They had learned that Today Decides Tomorrow. 9 vlllllll ffllfllfllfl ll!!! llllllllllll ll!! llllllllllllfllllll I ffl IH ll lllffflllylff ! lil!!! 1171! W!!! On top of that, every other boy in the neighbor- hood is vying with Willie for Lola's attention.
