ATTLEBOnO HIGH SCHOOL 3 1654 300041206 1987 TATTLETALE Attleboro High School Rathbun-Willard Drive Attleboro, Massachusetts 02703 Yck DEDICATIOn Mrs. Carol Martin The class of 1987 is pleased to dedicate Its yearbook to Mrs. Carol Martin. It was during our sophomore year that she became one of our advisors. For the next three years she proved herself invaluable in helping with various activities such as proms, fundraisers and the powderpuff game. She has always been there, a committed advisor as well as a dear and caring friend. She has been willing to stay after school for however long she was needed, and was always coming up with new ideas and suggestions for the class officers. A great part of the success of the class of 1987 is directly attributable to the efforts of Mrs. Martin. Our class was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her and share our memories with her. I ADVISORS Mrs. Carol Martin Mr. John Amaral Mrs. Joanne Haggerty When we entered Attleboro High School four years ago, it was as very scared, very inexperienced freshmen. Through the years, we have grown as a very successful, spirited class. We are very grateful to our three class advisors for all the help and support they have given us along the way. First there was Mr. Amaral, who was later joined by Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Haggerty. Together they have made an invaluable team. The Class of 1987 would like to thank each of you for your many long hours of service and dedication. The good times that you have made possible will never be forgotten. Thank you! Watch out Rambo. here comes Psycho. 5 r ■ , ymr ' t, •••• The class of 87 is made up of many individuals who have shared four of the best years In life. We met each other as freshmen in Western Civ., Earth Science, and Explor- atory. From that start, each of us chose our path; some chose academics, others chose business. Whatever choice was made, it seems we would all come together for gym classes every other day. And this year as seniors we surely will have fun in senior lounge and Contemporary Affairs. Over the years there were many favorites and whether it be Accounting, Biology, or Vocational classes, everyone seemed to get along and have a good time. I ' m sure we would all like to thank our teachers and our fellow class- mates for helping us make it through the good times and the bad times. Now we, once again individuals, will part to the most important class of all, the classroom of life. -Senior Crystal Rainville Jim Lountalasouk receives help from Mrs. Pigeon with his homework. Faculty and students m Wendi Desmarais and Leanne Burden living it up in Senior Lounge. Mr. LaCivita and Jason Amaral work on their programming in Computer Science. Hands-on training and experience The vocational department, which has provided a nnost inn- portant service to the students of Attleboro High School, con- tinues to be a nnajor element of the curriculum of the school. Vocational studies provide hands-on training and experi- ence in any of the occupation- al courses offered. The main goal of the occupational de- partment is to prepare stu- dents for gainful employment and to produce responsible members of the community. From past results, it is evident that the occupational depart- ment has successfully attained its goals and will continue to do so in the future. Proper wiring. Tina Kelly and Kathy Laverty, Jay Gagne, Master of Machi. Shop. Fads and fashions Remember Freshmen year? It was after the summer that we all saw the movie Flash Dance . So, it was only natu- ral for ripped sweatshirts and tank tops to become in , putting the preppy look to an end once and for all. Hairstyles stayed to basically the same. Feathering was still in, after all, who would be brave enough to change, certainly not a freshmen. Sophomore year, we became a little bit trendier with the ap- pearance of the Madonna style Lace stockings, lace tank tops, and lace hair bows be- came the new things to wear. Madonna had started a trend that was even apparent at our Sophomore Gathering. Mini prom dresses trimmed with lace were worn by all the girls making the gathering more of a formal affair. An idea whose time had come and which was to be carried on by the under- classmen to follow. What was to come Junior and Senior year? Well, let ' s just say that we did our own thing. Chances were taken and hair was shaved, spiked and jelled. Pants went tight, shirts and sweaters went big, and just Guess what happened to jeans? Hawaiian surf shorts and shirts became every day wear, so that when spirit week came around Hawaiian Dress Up Day was no more. Last but not least, were our precious Reeboks. Where would we be without a them? White, black, red, and pink, they came in practically any color magina- ble. What will we think of them in twenty years? Throughout our years at the high school, our sense of style has changed drastically. Styles have come in as fast as they ' ve gone out, but it is cer- tain that there ' s one thing that will never go out of style at A.H.S., and that is anything that is blue and white. - Senior Andrea Nunes Anita, attempting to master the American look! Look mom. we ' re seniors now!! Do you like this shirt, or what ' 12 B2 B2 cafeteria to the students at AHS, has many qualities that set it apart from the others. For the seniors, it ' s their sec- ond home; a place to do the last minute studying, catch up on the latest gossip, socialize, perhaps get a date for the up- coming weekend, and last but not least get that bite to eat that carries us through the day. When senior year rolls around the respective class takes over THE WALL ; the structure that separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and the seniors from the underclassmen. Who would ever think that a stack of cin- derblocks coated with paint would be the reward for se- niority. For those freshmen meeting in B3, sophomores gathering in the Resource Center, and juniors assem- bling at the back of B2, a little patience and a lot of hard work will grant them not only the title Senior, but rights to The Wall as well. Every year 82 leaves memo- ries of good times and special happenings and will hopefully continue to be the place that keeps the student body to- gether for many years to come here at A.H.S. - Senior Mark Praia Rena Pike and Michele Morgan What ' s up dude? show us their pearly whites! 13 The end- relief, or disappointment? I think that we all have a simi- liar feeling towards being a se- nior. It ' s a feeling of relief, yet it ' s also a disappointnnent. Being in the last year of high school is a relief in the way that it ' s a considerable ac- complishnnent. There has been a lot of hard work put into school by students and teachers, especially in high school. It has paid off and now we begin to make effective choices and gain indepen- dence. I know that eventually people get to an age, which is now for most, where there is a need for independence and the need for the ability to live as you want. The end of high school is also a disappointment for certain reasons. Everybody has to make the frightening decision of what they are going to do next. Whether it be continuing education, working or even starting a family, it is a major decision. Twelve years of learning and growing with these familiar people is sud- denly coming to an end. 1 hope that everyone can look back on these years with a smile. All of the students of the class of 1987 may seem apart at times, but I hope that we are all friends. I wish every- body happiness in the years ahead. -Senior Wendi Desmarais Fix those glasses Jen! Four years ago we opened the doors of Attleboro High School not knowing what was beyond. Now, as we get ready to close these sanne doors behind us, we have found knowledge, friendship, happiness, and special memories are what we leave. As freshmen, we organized quickly under the leadership of Mr. Amaral and had a great fundraiser and Social. Sophomore year, when Ivtrs. Haggerty and Mrs. Martin joined us, we continued our success with fundraising, ordering class rings, and the Sopho- more Gathering. Last year, as juniors, we organized a great pow- derpuff team, only to be disappointed by having it forfeited to us instead of winning on the field. The fact that we won the title of AHS Most Spirited Class kept us going strong, and we went on to have a great fundraiser and awesome prom. During our senior year, we have again banded together, retaining the title of Most Spirited Class. Although we bowed to the juniors in a close powder- puff game, our spirit remained, and for the first time we won the Thanksgiving Day Float contest. The boys on the field worked hard, tying North Attleboro 6-6 The Senior Prom, held November 21, 1986, at the Sheraton Mansfield Inn, was attended by over 200 couples, showing what a unified class we are. Though there were a few trying moments, a great time was had by all. Looking to the spring, we have Senior Cl ass Night, our Reception, and Breakfast before Gradua- tion, which will be on June 3, 1987. I would like to thank our three advisors, Mrs. Mar- tin, Mrs. Haggerty, and Mr Amaral for all the help and support you have provided us with these past years. To those who have been officers and representa- tives of the class, especially Crystal, thanks for all your organization and dedication— our success can be attributed to you. To the Class of 1987, thank you for four great years. When we close the doors to Attleboro High School for the last time, we will look back, smile, and be proud of our accomplishments. At the same time, we will look ahead at new doors— the doors to our future. May each of us find them open, and find individually the success we have found together. With love. Colleen Wade Senior Class President To the Class of 1987, thank you for four great years. When we close the doors to Attleboro SENIORS! Missing: Melissa Gonsalves Socia On May 18, 1984. we had our first class function, the Freshman Social. Because we were in our first year together and just getting acquainted, the theme, Hello was very fitting. Held in Bl Cafeteria, the Social was a fun night where everyone could dance on the lower level to music and a great light show provided by the DJ. When not dancing, most were sitting on the upper level enjoying pastries and punch provided by Culinary Arts. The night flew by, and everyone had a great time. Our Freshman Social was a great beginning to our high school fun as a class. Paul Berube dances the night away. 4 Above: Jason Amaral has the GO look. Sophomore Gathering Alter hours ol decorating, the Elks Golden Antler Room seemed a perfect setlmg lor our sophomore gathering. All the plans had been made and that Friday, May 3rd, the class gathered together for a great time. Everyone was seated around 7:30 and a chicken dinner was served. D.I. begMi playing music i inciug started. Morns Day and the Time ' s chicken dance was very popular and about hall way through th night couples joined (or our theme song. Madonna ' s Crazy For You. The rest ol the night was spent dancing and socializing. At the end ol the night a small group remained to clean up the broken balloons and fallen streamers. The room was bare, once again, and yet our heads were tilled with everlasting memories. MaryAnne Southwick and her date take a break to enjoy time with their friends. Sue always has a Iriendly smile. As April 12th neared, our class was ailed with excitement over the upcoming event. Tickets had been bought, gowns fitted, and tuxes rented for otir first formal event. At 6:30 on Saturday night couples started arriving at Demetri ' s Convention Center and were greeted by video cameras, classmates, and class advisors. After signing the guestbook, most couples joined the long line for pictures. Dinner, with a main course of roast beef, was served at 7:30 and was followed by hours of dancing to the music of X-Dreams . The band played our theme song, Thank You by Led Zeppelin; the queen and her court were announced; and the cake was cut. Everything was more exciting than anticipated. At 12:00 the favors were passed out and everyone departed. All in all. when the sun rose on Sunday morning, all that attended had many fond memories of the magical night that had past. The week of the prom flew by and around 6:00 on Friday, November 21, 1996 over 200 couples excitedly departed lor the Sheraton Matislield. Once there, everyone waited for the doors of the ballroom to open and their evenings to unfold. Around 7:30 p.m. the buffet was arranged and people were sent, by table, to serve themselves. Unfortunately, the last few tables were shorted. Any empty stomachs were soon forgotten when the Greg Greenaway Band began to play favorite music and the dancing began. Although the theme song. Loverboy ' s Heaven In Your Eyes , was not played, a little piece of heaven could be seen in the eyes of everyone there. It was a bit saddening to see this event come and pass so quickly, yet. just the same November 21. 1986 is one evening that will never be forgotten by those who attended. This sets us apart from many other art programs. Rather than feeding the students answers, the art teachers encourage them to work towards the answers. This skill of problem solving is critical to those pursuing an art career and also to those who find a different direction. Through working with an array of materials, both 3 dimensional and 2 dimensional, the art student experiences a large scope of what art is. and can be Teachers encourage experimenting and love new ideas. Hand made paper is just one example of a successful experiment. Many students have won adwards at the Annual Boston Scholastic Art Awards because of their paper making past. Art ' s Night, each April, gives the students and teachers a chance to show parents and the community what they ' ve accomplished. Students learn what it is like to display their work as a professional artist would, and also take pride in Art ' s Night. Art ' s Night could never be if it wasn ' t for the enthusiasm which happens in the Art class Andrea Nunes Class of 1987 Susan Boardnnan James Hall Joseph Mitnik (L to R): Paul Verdoia, Ronnie Cameron, Kory Rooks, Glen Landry, Brad Howard, Mr. Peter Nolin, Chhaya Muy, Todd Mignone, Chris Rounds, Kevin Quinlan. There is a great deal to learn in this field, but if you put your mind to it, it can be very profitable. Theory is an important part of auto shop. Staying updated with the most recent developments in the automotive industry will help in production repair. The hands-on experience you get helps to insure a good foundation for a job as an automotive technician. Bill Fontaine - Class of 1987 Doyle Peter Nolin 101 BUSINESS The most interesting course I have is accounting. Mr. Walinski just livens up the class with his humor The class is just as interesting in the sense that it consists of all types of students. All things given, it makes a class that I don ' t want to miss. The humor which is produced in the classroom affects all. Each understands the routine of Mr. Walinski. and interprets it in their own way. He turns the slightest mistake of one of his prey into humor that reaches everyone. Learning also appeals to me in this class. It is so exciting to learn how to record, apply laws, and make money. The anecdotes that Mr. Walinski tells us, apply to the lesson and furthers your understanding beyond the textbook. All these characteristics make him a very good teacher, and he ' s a great guy. The class is great and one I don ' t want to miss. I wish I ' d had him earlier in my school career because he would have influenced some of my career and course choices. The class is motivating, stimulating, and an overall great learning experience. Chris Brathas Class of 1987 Deb Pagano. The Child Care and Guidance Vocational Course prepares one for future studies in Child Care and Guidance, motherhood and parenting, early childhood education, child psychology, and other childhood studies. From the reactions of the other students, including myself, the most enjoyable part of the course was the Nursery School. From February to t ay we ran a nursery school for twelve children from the Attleboro area ranging in ages from three to four. They would come in three days a week for an hour and a half and we prepared daily lessons for the children. Organization and preparation skills were enforced and used each day. A complete schedule was prepared, and ready for their arrival. Such planned activities were circle team, freefime, snack time and activity time. All events and activities were connected with developing their fine and gross motor skills. Things such as manners, sharing, teaching colors, counting, textures, and the five senses were only a small number of the things being taught. Another advantage of the course is you are there for two and a half hours, forming a close relationship with the other students and the teachers Throughout the rest of the year we did studies on children from birth until the beginning of their teens. We visited other nursery and elementary schools, volunteering our services, and receiving a great deal of experience. The studies were difficult, but the knowledge and experience received was very interesting and enjoyable. Koren Sword Class of 1987 104 Donna and Denise enjoy a light moment during class. These field trips are very interesting and better our understanding of how electricity is used. In electricity, we prepare for college, technical school, or for an immediate job in the electrical field. At the end of every school year in electricity, each student donates some money and we have a shop party or cookout. While taking any of the above languages, students are taught about the cultural and geographical aspects of the country. During class, students learn vocabulary, grammar, create sentences and questions, all of which increase in difficulty with each additional year. Participation in class is very important. The more the language is spoken, read or written, the more enjoyable and easier it becomes to understand. Most students find that taking a foreign language is a pleasant and interesting experience. All the players had a lot of fun and pride. The coaches gave us all the confidence we needed. We would like to think that one thing the team never did was give up during a game, especially during the win over Feehan and the tie against North. We would like to thank all the fans and student body for all the support that they gave us through out the season. It really helped to pick us up when we were losing. As for next year, the team should be able to hold their own. There are many talented underclassmen who should be good, because of the amount of determination and the heart they have. Good Luck next year. ' !! Captains 1986 87 146 Row 1(1 to r): Jim Reynolds, Kevin Candelet. Each girl was given goals to achieve, and towards the end of the season, each accomplished their goal, gained experience competing, and made new friendships. Although the majority of the team was young this year, we contained enough depth to lead us to success. The team ' s great potential will lead them to success in the future. Co-Captains Sheryl St. George and Stacie Dumont Boys Gymnastics None of us on the gymnastics team this year knew how well we would do. There were only four seniors on the team, but a lot of talented underclassmen and even some freshmen gave us high hopes for another successful season. And sure enough, with the talented and dedicated coaching by Mr. Martin and Don Gauvin, we grew to be a strong force in the league. Tim Fonseca and I have enjoyed our four years on the team and especially this past year, serving as captains. I ' m sure that all the underclassmen will continue to grow stronger and more skilled, and we wish you all the continued success, under Mr. Martin, that you deserve. Our underclassmen carried the team through our 9 and 2 season. We really enjoyed our season, but not only because it was a winning one. We have great team spirit and unity. Every girl on the team is allowed to compete in almost every meet, giving them a sense of loyalty to the team. We work together, and we win. Next year should be a terrific season. The team is losing only two Seniors and the underclassmen are already carrying the team. With our winning spirit and ability we should continue strongly. A Special Athlete Tom has been training and competing for the Special Olympics since he was 8 years old. And his hard work has paid off. For two consecutive years, Tom has been victorious, competing in the Massachusetts Special Olympics pentathalon in Boston. Tom is now training for the International Special Olympics Summer Games which will take place next July and August at Notre Dame University and St. Mary ' s College in South Bend, Indiana. This will be a very special event for Tom because be is the only one in the Attleboro Area entering the Summer Games and he is 1 out of 10 entering from the state. All of us here at Attleboro High School know that Tom will come back from the Summer Games victorious. And with that victory, he will carry with him a special meaning to the word athlete. Hello, my name is Virginia Jeanin. I come from the south of France. I came to the United States to study and learn the American Education, Since I ' ve been here I ' ve enjoyed my stay. Attleboro is a friendly, happy place, I ' ve met a lot of nice people and have made some excellent long lasting friendships, Ivly host family the Blackwells are super people. They are very kind and helpful and helped make me feel right at home I thank them for that! My year here at Attleboro, with all my new experiences, from every walk of life - has been fun!! I thank everyone who has made It that way! And also wish the class of 1987 good luck in the future, Sincerly, Virginie, The first thing I would like to say is that I really enjoyed studying and living in America The American High School is very different for me. And it has been somewhat difficult. Learning english has been very hard, I will make the effort to learn it, Attleboro High School is a very good school. We have good teachers and good friends. I appreciate the politeness of my American class-mates Even though I will return to Brazil, I will always remember this experience. Frederico Costa Filho It ' s been lots of fun to go to A.H S, I ' m so glad I came here. There are many kinds of people that there ' s no certain way to live. You have more choices on everything. We ' re expected to study all the time over in Japan I found little difference between Japan and the U S, since it is very Americanized I guess it doesn ' t matter where you are as long as you have good friends, I ' d like to thank all of my friends, helpful teachers and my lost family who is the best one in the whole world Special thanks to my friends in the band, chorus, and A Cappella who have made my American life a great one I ' ll miss you so much when I go back in March to go back to school In Japan, the school year starts in April, I ' m sure I ' ll come back here again. See you then, June Kitanaka I am very happy that I have been able to come here and spend a year in your high school. The people and the school are so different here compared to Sweden, It has been an experience I will never forget. The thing that meant most to me is that you can participate in so many different activities in school, I would like to thank my friends, the teacher, and the guidance counselors who have made this year such a great year for me, SWEDEN RULES!!! Thank You, Johan Noren This article is a description of a foreign exchange student (that ' s me), his life in home country, West-Germany, and his life In America Born on April 2, 1970 (Birthday cards are always welcome), I grew up in a very unusual town: West-Berlin, democratic island in the middle of communistic East Germany, two million people surrounded by the wall. But a town with a lot of life, spirit, and fun. Without that it would probably break down. In all the years. I enjoyed my life in Berlin. But sometime somehow I decided to do something different and so I got involved in international student exchange and applied for being a foreign exchange student to America, But why Attleboro? Well, if I would have had a decision, I would probably spend this year somewhere in Florida, southern California, or Hawaii, A family that wanted to have a foreign exchange student would apply at the same organization, gets some information about several students and then picks one of them. So I ended up in Attleboro with the LaFerrieres And I think I was lucky to get in this family. In the first weeks I had to find out how to spend all my time that I had available suddenly. So I joined the Attleboro High Soccer Team, That made things for me a lot easier. I met kids and made some friends even before school started and most important, I had something to do and no time to get homesick Then finally, with some days delay, the first day in school was there I felt almost like a six year old kid. that waited all his short life for that first day of school, but after a while I realized that school means the same everywhere In those first days, I had trouble remembering all those names of all those new people, I think you can understand that But now that there are no big problems anymore, I am having a good time In and out of school. So, I will stay here the remaining eight months having a lot of fun with all of you until the sad moment comes to say good-bye But hopefully I will see some of you again!! Clemens Heilmann m The fast thing that I was worried about when I come to America was how different It would be from there. Also how hard it would be for me to adapt myself to this complelety new culture and thai of the U.S.A. is what really makes this year such a fantastic experience for me. 1 can promise everyone that I will never forget the people nor all the ' good things that I have learned about American cutture. I will treasure sfiaring the year with my host family. ■ ■ mwK Thanks everybody, Juan V. Regolt i My name is Anita Jensen, and I came from Bergen, Norway. I ' m staying here in Attleboro for 10 months as an exchange student. Attleboro High is different from my high school in Norway in many ways. We can ' t pick the subjects we want in Norway, and we don ' t have school sports. Besides that, I just love all the activities you have here like pep rallies, spirit week, powderpuff etc. I ' ve never seen anything like the school spirit at Attleboro High in Norway. The first day of school I was really nervous. It seemed so huge, and I was afraid I ' d get lost! But the kids here have been great!!! I ' ve made lots of good friends, I ' ll really miss when I go back. I can ' t believe I ' ve already been here for 3 1 2 months! Being an exchange student has been a neat experience so far. I haven ' t only learned a lot about the U S A, and the people here, I ' ve also learned a lot about myself too. Of course I get homesick sometimes, but usually I ' m too busy with school, sports, and friends to even think about it Last, I want to thank the people that have made this one of the best years of my life: my host family, my friends, my teachers and everybody else. We have now completed our Senior year at A.H.S., and we are about to enter the difficult world in which we live. We all share the common experience of being a part of the Class of 1987. This book holds the memories of our past four years at A.H.S. and it is designed to make us remember the fun and excitement of our Senior year. Our yearbook would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of our advisor, Mr. Frederick. Mr. Frederick always had the solutions to our many difficulties. He has not only been an advisor, but a dear and caring friend. In addition, we would like to thank our Josten ' s representative, Mr. Dan Smith. His knowledge and creativity proved to be a great asset to our book. Also, this year ' s staff would like to thank our T.D. Brown photographer, Gary Melino. Due to his flexibility and imagination, we were able to present our class at its best, along with our staff photographer, Richard Field, who solved difficult situations when Gary was unavailable and to Brian Goudreau, who designed the creative cover of this volume of Tattletale. It helps us to carry out our theme with imagination. To the faculty, thank you for your understanding and cooperation. You were always patient with the inconveniences of our productive schedule. Thank you to all those seniors who helped us out: essayists, typists, proofreaders, and everyone else who gave a helping hand. Your contributions make the book more personal to the class by reflecting the individuals who helped make up the Most Spirited Class , the Class of 1987. Tattletale Editors 1987- Erin and Beth
