Forward Our four years at Attleboro High School are but a mere beginning, a prelude to life ' s long journey. The future challenges us to come forth resolved to do all we can, see all we can, be all we can. Before we begin this Journey, we pause to thank our parents, our teachers, and our friends for helping us prepare for tomorrow. We will go forward in many different directions. For us there will be no turning back. Yesterday ' s gone, yesterday ' s gone. Just think what tomorrow will bring. Jill and Sara Co-editors 2 ' I sitr... 1982 Tattletale Attleboro High School teaching faculty — 17 remembering seniors — 33 competing sports — 101 enjoying activities — 131 gathering sociai — 145 creating arts — 159 harmonizing music — 169 growing underclassmen — 177 learning occupational academic — 185 3 Dedication As a token of our appreciation for all he has done for the Class of 1982, we feel it fitting that our yearbook be dedicated to Mr. James Burbank. Whether it was the prom, a float, or a fundrais ing project, he was always cheerfully willing to help and ad vise. His counsel, and willingness to sometimes just listen will al ways be fondly remembered by those of us who had the pleasure of working with him. He has been both a fine teacher and a good friend. f I. I thinking about tomon-ow. Why not think about times to come . . . 10 and about the things that you ' ve done. 12 13 15 Just think what tomorrow will bring. They have been the keys to our four successful years at A.H.S. Some of the outstanding events we have participated in have been the float competitions. As freshmen, we placed third; as sophomores, we placed second; as juniors and seniors, we won! We were also excited about winning the Powerderpuff football game as both juniors and seniors. Our fundroising drives have been successful too, from towel sales to candy sales. All that we ' ve accomplished in our four years in high school has been due to the support and guidance of our advisors. At this time, we would also like to thank three other people who have contributed a great deal of our class: Mr. Lutzy, Mr. Svendsen, and Mr. Underwood. They have always been there when we needed them, and they will remain in our memory. Below-Row 1: S. Patten, T. Smith; L. Blanchette; C, Keane, J Shea. K Cronin Row 2: L Dadogian. K Gauthier. Through your perseverance and per- sonal leadership, we were able to accomplish many things as a class. Now we have to go on our ways, no matter where life takes us. May our dreams and goals all come true and may we seek the future with happiness and success. Class of 82 91 In memoriam to , . . Paul Jacombe Scott Morin He was so young, God. So young and strong and filled with promise. So vital, so radi- ant, giving so much joy whereever he went. He was so brilliant. On this one day you lavished so many talents that could have enriched your world. He had already received so many honors, and there were so many honors to come. Why, then? In our agony we ask. Why him? Why not someone less gifted? Someone less good? Some hop-head, rioter, thief, brute, hood? Yet, we know, even as we demand what seems to us a rational answer, that we are only intensifying our grief. Plung- ing deeper into the blind and witless place where all hope is gone. A dark lost place where our own gifts will be blunted and ruin replace the oodness he brought and wished for us. Instead, let us thank you for the marvel that this boy was. That we can say good-bye to him without shame or regret, rejoic- ing in the blessed years he was given to us. Knowing that his bright young life, his many gifts, have not truly been stilled or wasted, only lifted to a higher level where the rest of us can ' t follow yet. Separation? Yes. Loss? Never. For his spirit will be with us always. And when we meet him again we will be even more proud. Thank you for this answer, God. 92 By: Marjorie Holmes 1978 July 25— The first test tube baby was born in England August 17— Three Americans crossed the Atlantic in a hot air balloon November 19- Mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana under the direction of Reverend Jim Jones, and the killinq of US Representative Leo Ryan and four members of his party 1979 January 1 — The US and China establish formal relations January 19 — Last Watergate prisoner freed (former Attorney General John Mitchell, who served 19 months parole) Febuary 1 — Patricio Hearst left prison March 19— House of Representatives on television for the first time May 23— Burt Lance indicted on charges of conspiracy to obtain bank loans for personal use June— Gas shortage June 11— Skylob debris falls on Australia August 15— Andrew Young resigns as US Ambassador to the United Nations after it was revealed that he had unauthorized meetings with the P.L.O. Chris has been playing volleyball since the first grade. She thinks the team has alot of talent, but that they need to work as a team. Next year the team will be better, she thinks They ' ll all have more experience at working as a team. The best part of high school for Chris was IMike Cat- lowlli She ' s also going to miss the fun times she had with friends in her senior year. After high school she plans to go to college and to own a sports shop with Debt ie. 112 114 Players - score a goal! I think we have alot of potential. She says, Many of us have innproved very much. If we all work together, we ' ll have a promising season, Be- sides having a talented team, they have a talented coach, Coach O ' Connell is doing very well ... He sees what we do wrong and works on that. Betsy knows they have a talented team. Everyone is great. We ' ve got alot of skilled players. After next year, who knows? The team may be even better. There are alot of good underclassmen. About Coach O ' Connell, she says, We ' re proud of him. He ' s doing great, and this is only his first year! Linda has praise mostly for Coach O ' Connell. It is his first year with the field hockey team. He was unfa- miliar with the sport, but within a few days he knew almost everything. She attributes many of the team ' s victories to not only the skill of the players, but to his coaching skill as well. Laura Dadagian is proud of the attitude of the team. ' ' It ' s the people-they ' re all very talented and dedicated . Andy Berdos feels that the most outstanding characteristic of the team is its closeness, We ' ve got good quality kids . . . the team ' s real close- everyone knows each other. Kevin Cro- nin elaborates on this in saying: We have a special closeness. You can see it when we win, but when we lose, it really shows. Kevin feels that the team also owes much of its success to Mr. Newman. He ' s special. He doesn ' t just coach us on the track, but in life. Bob Wilcox couldn ' t agree more. He ' s an excellent guy. He helps the kids alot. He ' s not just con- cerned with athletes; but people. With talent, enthusiasm, and an outstanding coach, it is easy to see why Attleboro High has one of the best cross country teams in the area. 118 119 Swimmers • swim witti sicili! It ' s true- the boy ' s swim team is small, but its members are excellent. John Vaughan, for example, is one of the best swimmers around and the whole team is outstanding. And about Mr. Bonneville? This is his first year as coach, and he ' s really doing well. He ' s got us working harder than we ' ve ever worked. After graduation, Mike will miss the friends he made, and the competition. But he does plan to swim in college. U-Lowell has a good team. It ' s hard to get on, but if I get on, I ' ll stick with it. As captain of a very talented team, he ' s got a pret- ty good chance. However— wheth- er college was going to be part of our future or not- we set forth determined to make this year the best we could. We started early in October with the first of many powder puff practices. On No- vember 8, 1981 we took to the field only to find defeat, Although the Seniors won a well deserved gome (14-0)- we Juniors gave it our all. By now Thanksgiving was quickly approaching and we had to get some serious floating accomplished. The spirit was tre- mendous during that time and al- though we had float meetings every night, it did pay off. During the week of January 25th. we held our fund raiser and the results were tremendous. In late October we held our magazine drive which proved to be successful. On November 17 and 18. the Sophomore class ordered class rings. As the spring ap- proached we all looked for- ward to a memorable Soph- omore Gathering, which was held at Pawtucket Country Club on April 10, 1982, At this time I would like to wish every member of the Closs of 84 good luck in the future and may you hold for- ever the memories of your days at Attleboro High School, Susan Murphy Sophomore Class President Row i- Potty Lambert, Sue Murphy Row 2 — Treasurer- Chris Ann Lind, Secretary- Patty Lam- voltera Sue Dumochel, Tammy Lee, John bert. With the help of teachers, upperclass- men and each other the class overcame these feelings The beginning of the year was disappointing because we were un- able to have our float, but as the year went on, our class spirit in- creased. We benan our class fundraiser with great enthusiasm. We worked hard to make the year better, and the 81-82 year ended with a new hope for the future. The sudden and untimely death of Bob Coelho has shocked the entire community. No words are sad enough to express our sense of loss. No words ore adequate to describe his accomplishments. No words can ex- press our love, respect and admiration for him. Bob Coelho devoted the lost twenty-sev- en years of his life to the Attleboro public schools as a teacher, principal and Super- intendent of Schools. For the past 13 years he was the Superintendent of Schools. He dedicated his many talents and abilities to the development of the best possible educational system for the children of At- tleboro. He believed that the wealth of a nation lies in the extent to which creative powers of its youth are allowed to func- tion and that every young person should have a chance to grow to full capacity, in skill, in self reliance and in leadership. He was a man of warm feeling, a man of tender sympathy and a man who felt as si ncerely for the individual sufferings of a troubled student as he did for the great cause of human progress. He never forgot an act of kindness or an act of good will. Bob Coelho was not only an outstanding professional educator, he was a tremen- dous human being. Fortunate are those who knew him. They will never cease to recall that wonderful union of qualities which gave him such power and made him so great an influence wherever he was known. It was this harmony of truth and love, mainly courage and greatness Once in a lifetime you get to know a man like Bob Coelho. At intimate range, he was very warm and considerate of the needs of others, tough but generous in his judgement of others and genuinely fond of people. He was the true friend of stu- dent, teacher and parent No matter was too insignificant to escape his personal at- tention. He seemed, more than most men, at home in his world. He found or made opportunities of usefulness wherever he went. All those lives he touched, and there were many, were benefited. Bob Coelho was one of a kind. He was our best. He will not be replaced, nor will he be forgotten. But we must believe that there is some higher purpose in his life. We cannot doubt that there is as good work for him to do in the unknown beyond as the work he left behind. We will remember him always with love, respect and admira- tion. We thank God for all we have had from such a presence among us and trust in God ' s perfect Providence in to what we cannot now understand or explain. May God bless him and keep him. Message from Mr. Bray Dear Senior Class: Your four years at Attleboro High School have just about come to a close. It is my sin- cere hope that this school pro- vided an atmosphere and en- vironment where you v ere able to acquire nevj skills, make long lasting friendships, and accomplish feats large or small that stay with you for the remainder of your lives. As a class and as individuals you have maintained your own respect and have brought credit to Attleboro High School. I have been proud to hove been associated with you and wish you the very best in your future endeavors. Most sincerely Robert H. Bray Principal 231 Now that the task of creating our yearbook is completed, we can look back on this as one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of our lives. Not only have we learned a great deal, but also we have had the oportunity to work with a number of people who have been of special help to us. Mr. Donald Frederick, our advisor, was always there to give us guidance and support. His enthusiasm for this project made the production of this yearbook enjoyable. Daniel Smith, the representative from Josten ' s American Yearbook Company, has been our source of encouragement throughout the many months of creating this book. Gary Melino, our photographer, was available in time of need to help us meet our deadlines. Special thanks are due to Mr. Robert Thayer for his assistance in photography, Mr. J.D. Smith for his technical assistance, Down Ditano and Sue Governo for their help in designing the cover of this yearbook, and to all the faculty for their forebearance and cooperation. We would also like to thank each member of our hard working, dedicated Yearbook Staff who made this book possible. Although few in number, they were filled with spirit and enthusiasm. Some went without lunches and others found it necessary to take time from their studies to complete this book. This book holds many memories for us; we hope it will do the same for you. Sara and Jill 232
