GERMAINE 40 Harvey Road Attleboro 93 Freshman Year Soon after our freshmen year began, we elected our class officers. They were: Dan Sullivan — Vice- President, Renee Duquette — Secretary, and Ann Murphy — Treasurer. Although our float didn ' t make it to the Turkey game, our Homecoming Queen Lisa Burns did. Our team that year returned home with Hilda. Later that year we held a freshmen dance which proved profitable. We also participated in Deck the Halls. Our freshmen year brought many new friends and experiences which have carried through our last three years at Attleboro High School. My best of luck to all members of the Class of ' 81. iikmM i ' Robin Pascal i«B H Freshmen Class President Upon entering our Sophomore year, the class had a very optimistic outlook, and was determined to make it a successful year. With Jay Rixon as President, Dan Sullivan as Vice-President, Ann Murphy as Treasurer, and Renee Duquette as Secretary, our enthusiasm seemed to provoke a lot more spirit towards making our class recognized. I stress recognized because that was our main goal. We wanted our class to be heard. We found that our Sophomore year took a lot more planning for our activities than our Freshman year had. There was the Sophomore dance, fund raising, deck the halls and one of the biggest events, the Sophomore Gathering. With our class ' s effort, our gathering went very well. The class rings were another major part of our Sophomore year. It took much preparation and organiza- tion, but by March, when they were delivered, our effort was decidedly worthwhile. During the spring, our treasurer, Ann Murphy, transferred to another school and Terri Burden was elected to replace her. She was very determined and was a definite asset to our class. Stressing again that our main goal was to be recognized, with the unity and enthusiasm of our class, we reached our goal. It was then that we looked towards Junior year to establish our class as the best. Renee Duquette Class Secretary Junior Year Ben Franklin once said, Work begun is half done. At the start of our Junior year, the class of 81 believed indeed that work half done was work that had just begun. We had our first two years behind us, but the hardest work was yet to conne. Jay, Joel, Renee and I worked in the spirit of teamwork to make the class of ' 81 ' s Junior year a success. The class was represented by Claire Varrieur, Stacey Kabat, Neil Finn, George Pedro, Peter Pierce, and Pete Gaudreau in Student Coun- cil, and Mag Wadick did an excellent job as Public Relations Director. Our class began the year with a very profitable fundraiser; a candy sale which made over $3,000.00. But even before the candy sale was over, our girls began their football practices in preparation for the annual Powder Puff game. The practice certainly paid off. The fans got what they paid for as they watched two evenly-matched teams of determined girls play an exciting game that ended in a 6-6 tie. The Juniors spent the month of November working on the Thanksgiving Game Float under the direction of Mag Wadick. Although we didn ' t win the contest, we had a lot of fun putting the float together. The Junior Prom, held at the Sheraton-Mansfield on May 9, was a great success. And as the end of the year drew near, we held class elections that will go down in history. The class voted twice to determine who would hold the office of Senior class president. The second vote was a tie between Dennis Medieros and Jay Rixon. Being too late in the year to make a decision, our Junior year ended and vacation began with us not knowing who would be our Senior class president when we returned in September. Sue Goretti Junior Treasurer Senior Year By the end of our Junior year, all of us were ready to trade in the title of Junior for that of Senior. Signaling the transition from Junior to Senior were the class elections. We left school in June unaware of the results of the presidential race. It was during the last day that Dennis and I decided to accept the office of Co-President and began to make plans for 1980 — 81. At a summer meeting, it was our consensus that with such a fine group; Dennis Medeiros and I (Co-Presidents), Jerry Bourgeois (Vice-President), Sue Goretti (Treasurer), and Renee Duquette (Secretary), we would do our best to make our Senior year the best. More importantly, we decided that anything and everything we did would be in the best interest of the class. With all our arguments aside, we came back in September willing to work together for the class. It was during the last week in September that the class actually became involved. For the next four weeks, we worked hard selling candy bars in an effort to boost the class treasury. In the end we, the officers, were grateful for the large amount of participation which resulted in over a $4,000.00 profit. Now that our bank account was replenished, the activities began. In late October, preparations for the Powder Puff game, float contest, and the Senior Prom were under way. After long, hard practices, the Senior girls were ready to beat the Juniors on the gridiron. Much to our surprise the class of ' 82 pulled a quick one and managed to defeat us. Despite the loss, our girls played an excellent game and also a fair one. Good Job! To get us back into the Senior Spirit, we completed plans for the big party. On November 21, we enjoyed a fine dinner and dancing at the Senior Prom, held at the Blue Hills Country Club in Canton, Ma., featuring the band Full Tilt with Turn the Page , the theme of the prom. Of course we won ' t forget the goings on during the wee hours of the morning. Rooked again , was the general consensus in November. After many meetings and lots of hard work, we were again surprised when the judges chose the Juniors float over ours, but we conceded graciously. As we waited out our rest period, the end drew near. Soon after Christmas break we were completing plans for the last stretch. On March 2, 1981, the students took up a battle against the faculty in the annual Donkey Basketball game. After March was over we had V2 months left, and only fun left to look forward to. Obviously there would be many parties, the reception, and the Breakfast, but on May 28, 1981, we would be seen mocking our peers, our favorite groups, the teachers, and the administration in saying good-bye to Attleboro High during Senior Class Night. On June 3, 1981, we will no longer be the Class of 1981, but probably the Class of 1985. Certainly it was a busy year and without the help of P.T. Sollitto, Bob Thayer, and Jeff Samson, we would not have seen the end. We extend to these three our many thanks and great appreciation. It is now that we look back on the history of the class that we realize that we have attained one of our major goals: the class of 1981 is one that will not soon be forgotten. Granted, there were some hard times when we thought we would never see the end, however, hand in hand with the bad comes the good, and it is the good times at A.H.S. that we shall keep forever. At a glace we have found that the past four years have managed to fly by without a second thought, but they were four of the most interesting years of our lives and they will continue to be memories in our scrapbooks. ) ... And so begins another segment of life; the time has come for each of us to move on and to become a growing in-1 dividual. With memories of good and important moments behind us, we, too, must look forward to what awaits in our future. As the month of June, 1981, closed in, the thought of success should have entered all of our minds, for we have suc- -ceded in conquering a major challenge in the paths of our lives. — isulis My hat is tipped to you. Class of 1981, 1 wish all of you the best of luck and CO NGRATULATIONS c . - J:In is the 52 L A A ALIVE, Jay Rixon Senior Co-President IE Jan 2v My name is Birgit Golde and I ann an exchange student from Weisbaden, West Germany. My father is an English and Latin teacher at a high school, and my mother works as a secretary in a big hospital. I have one sister, Ulrike, who is nine years old. My school in Germany is a very old and small one; it was built in 1902 and has only eight hundred students. Can you imagine how scared I was when I heard that I was supposed to go to Attleboro High which is such a large school and where about 2500 students attend it? But once I came to the school, it was just great. Everybody tried to help me and did not treat me as a foreigner, but rather, treated me like everybody else. It was a wonderful experience and I found a lot of good friends during those first days, (especially when I got lost and could not find my classroom). I have to thank all of you for welcoming me into your life, but I want to give a special thank-you to the Drama class which I joined. I had a lot of fun with all the members. Of course it was fun, but because Attleboro High offers so many courses, I could choose the right subjects for me with great teachers, and I had a terrific time in my classes. When I think back to why I wanted to come to America, I find the following reason: I wanted to get to know a different people with its various traditions, and its own culture. Also, another im- portant reason was that I wanted to learn the language ( and I am still learning) because I want to become either an interpreter or an English teacher later on. I feel that I am on my way to realizing these goals and I want to thank my parents in Germany who made this stay in Attleboro possible and my family here who helped me a lot in finding my way through American life and who showed me different parts of the country. Whoever has the opportunity to go to another country should take it because it can give you so much. Just seeing problems, things, traditions, etc. from another point of view helps you become more open minded. Finally, I just want to say: Thanks, to all of you! Nobody can ever take the memory of this great year from me because I had a terrific time. Birgit Golde Hi. My name is Pernilla Lennstrom, or as most people call me, Pilla. I ' m a Swedish exchange student here at Attleboro High. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to come to America, because I love to travel. In Sweden I live on a big farm with my parents and three brothers. My home is in the south-west part of Sweden; a one and half hour drive south from Goteborg (Gothenburg). The school system in Sweden is different from the one in America. The school I attend is a secondary school called Marks gymnasie skola . Here in America you choose the courses you want to take, but in Sweden they put different courses together like a package and then you choose a package; each package is called a line. The line I ' m taking is call- ed a social-science line. The school has an open campus and you don ' t need passes. The schedule is different each day and the periods are from forty to eighty minutes. This year in America has been a wonderful experience. I ' ve learned a lot and have met a lot of ' eally nice people. I want to thank all these people that made this year possible for mel! Pernilla (Pilla) Lennstrom Hello! My name is Britta Otzen and I am an exchange student from West Germany, Norderstedt, near Hamburg. I came to the United States on the twelfth of August. Our plane landed in New York after a nine hour flight. When I came. I wasn ' t so sure whether or not I could really stay here for one year as I always used to get homesick. But now, five months later, I don ' t feel very homesick as I am quite busy all the time — mostly doing homework for school. I took courses like Biology II A. P. and Calculus as I ' d like to become a genetics or a medical engineer. Except the busy-work , I like school, especially the teachers. They are quite different from my teachers in Germany. My teachers there are more strict and are standing on a high level. They are not like friends to the students like the teachers here. Considering that the Attleboro High School teachers are so nice and good, I am very sad that the school committee plans to cut so many. I like the sports that are offered here. My favorites are gymnastics and tennis. To compare the students here to the students in school in Germany, I have to say that the students here are more obliging in the beginning, but they don ' t seem to know what real friend- ship means. The latter is, in my opinion, the product of the course system. In Germany there exist classes until the tenth school year which means that the same twenty to forty people are together for four years in the elementary school before they go to different schools where another twenty to forty people are put together for the following six years. So the pupils get really close to each other. In talking about students, I ' d like to mention Lisa Quaglia who took me around when I came to this school, Kim Rozak who helped me in doing homework. Pete LaPorte who was always friendly to me, and Barbra McGrath who has become my best friend here. Last but not least, I ' d like to say a big thank-you to Mr. and Mrs. Gard, my host-parents, and to my mother back in Germany who made this trip reality for me. I hope to have the opportunity sometime to come back to the U.S.A. and especially to Attleboro. The 1980-1981 Cheerleaders represented Attleboro High School and supported their teanns with great pride and dignity. This squad developed a genuine spirit throughout the school and the city. Some of the awards presented to the squad at Cheerleading Camp were: 1st place for spirit, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place for team competition. The AHS squad received a 3rd place plaque for overall competition in the Regionals. They also qualified to compete nationally in Michigan. To the students of Attleboro High School, Coach Steven Newman is all of these. As Head Track Coach, he has built a program that has become a model of ex- cellence for schools throughout the state to emulate. True, former Head Coach Tom Crowe may have been the architect, but Newman has been the mortar and bricks, the blood and sweat, the heart and soul of Attleboro Track over the last 15 years. His teams have won almost 95% of their dual meets, numerous Conference Championships, and a State Championship in Cross Country. Yet, for the Coach this success is not a destination but a journey; not the finish line but a hand-off in the relay race of life. His athletes have gained fame and recognition as performers but his influence on them as individuals has had the greatest impact. If greatness is measured in tangible terms then Coach Newman ' s record speaks for itself. However, It is the greatest of sensitivity, perseverance, and spirit that endures in Steve Newman and makes him the Coach of EVERY Year. 127 Winter Track M. Wilbur, P. Gaudreau, G. Bienvenue, S. Existing records were shattered and new were established in most team and individual categories. Attleboro was crowned undefeated champion in SEMass Division I West at 14-0, and achieved a spark- ling 17-1 record overall, capturing a berth in the Mass. State Tournament. Ironically the catalyst for this superlative season was a strong dose of adversity: a stunning loss to North Attleboro in the finals of the prestigious Attleboro Area Girls ' Christmas Tourna- ment. However, the lessons learned on that game, only the second of 4he season, were obviously not forgotten, for the Bombardiers then streaked to a school record of 16 consecutive victories. The team listed only three seniors, Co-Captains Maureen Hanlon and Missy Ogg, and Sharon Hoyt, but these three proved the essential qualities of leadership, maturity, and emotional stability both on and off the court. Junior Sue Governo had an outstanding season, setting a new school record in points scored during a single season. Hockey Season was a frustrating one for Coach DiCristofaro. All season long the hockey team out played and out shot their opponents but ended up with a not-so-impressive overall record. The players worked very hard and never quit all season long. The Coach commended the following players: David Mercier, Mike Mulry, Neil Brousseau, Gary Warren, Chuck Soufy, Bruce White, Dan Chase, Kevin Porter, Jay Calista, Tom Bell, Steve Morris, Dan Jette, Guy Morris, and Brian Angevine. The new year held many new activities and respon- sibilities. O ne of the most successful months for the class of 1982 was November. We were victorious over the seniors in the powder puff game. On Thanksgiving, we were the win- ners of the float competition. Our major fund-raising project was the traditional junior candy sale. In May, the Junior Prom will be held at the Sheraton Mansfield. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the juniors for their support during the past four years and to extend well-deserved congratulations to all those who par- ticipated in the powder puff and float activities. — Pam Miles Class President OFFICERS: Jenny Shea, Vice-President; Julie Smith, Secretary; Pam Miles, President; Kevin Cronin, Treasurer. 183 184 The Sophomore Class With a year of experience behind us, we the C lass of 1983 entered our sophomore year with the determina- tion to make our class number one . An early start on our float proved that the spirit in our class was tremendous. Although our float did not win the contest, there was an overwhelming amount of participa- tion from our class. In October, we held our first fund-raiser in which we sold magazines. By the end of the se- cond term we had ordered our class rings. We then began to organize for an event which we were looking for- ward to and seemed to be rapidly ap- proaching the Sophomore Gathering. Our sophomore year has been a year of discovery and development for all. We will now enter our junior year retaining our number one image. — Cindy Welch Class President OFFICERS: Beth Burden, Treasurer; Debbie Miller, Secretary; Joe Solmonese, Vice-President; Cin- dy Welch, President. I 185 The Freshman Class Getting dances or having some kind of fun activity are just two of the freshnnan class goals. We would also like to have as many fundraising events as possible to raise money for our class. Another goal is to participate in a lot of school events in order to help our class on the way to being the most spirited class ever. — Tammy Ducharme Class President Wendy Kenniston, Secretary; Tammy Ducharme, President; Susan Murphy, Vice-President; Chris Ann Lind, Treasurer. Foreign Exchange Students My name is Maria Loima. I ' m an exchange student from Finland, spending my junior year at Attleboro High School. Since I came here, I ' ve learned a great deal about the U.S.A. thanks to the friendly student s and teachers at this school. I am a member of the A cappella Choir and I ' m hoping to be in the chorus of Oklahoma!. I hope that others have learned to understand different cultures and a little something about Finland by my being here. I ' m glad I was able to spend my year here with you. I will always remember it. My name is Daniel Pfeiffer and I ' m an exchange student from El Salvador, where I lived for seven years. I used to live in Germany. I came to Attleboro the 19th of August, 1980 and I ' m staying untilJuly, 1981. My father is a physics and mathematics teacher in Weisbaden, Germany, where my family, which includes two sisters and three brothers, has lived since last December. Here in the U.S.A., I ' m staying with the Turgeon family. I ' m a sophomore at Attleboro High School. I study Chemistry, English, Government, Mathematics, Orchestra (I play the violin), and Music Theory. In December I joined the swim team and I really enjoy it. I ' m also a member of the Ski Club with which I went to New Hampshire this February. I like the people from the United States and I ' m going to miss them when I have to leave. E.G. A. for selling ads, Taylor Publishing Company and our representative Will Novak for publishing the book, our photographer Gary Melino of T. D. Brown Studio for the superior photographic work, all of our section editors, photographers, and general staff for their hard work, and especially our advisor Mrs. Diaz, who advice, determination and belief in us made the production of this book possible. Our thoughts will be with her and her family, wherever they may go. As quickly as they began, our four years here at Attleboro High school have ended. Thus we have traveled a little further about the circle we stepped into eighteen short years ago. We will continue traveling, growing, and changing with each step we take. We will come upon times that we would just as soon forget as well as those we will cherish always. Metaphorically, the sun has set on the class of 1981, as there will never be another, yet with the subsequent rising of the sun, we will awaken renewed and set forth to conquer that which awaits us all. As you recall the year 1981, remember always and act upon our goal: To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
