Principal ATTLEBORO HIQH SCHOOL I I ATTLEBORO HIGH Rathbun Willard Drive Attleboro, Massachusetts SECTIONS Staff Arts Sports Underclassmen Activities Occupational Social Seniors Ads 6 14 15 The class of 1 979 proudly dedicates this yearbook to our class advisor, Linda Anderson-Gorst, in recognition of her much appreciated service to us. Throughout our four years together, Mrs. Gorst has been a main factor in the organization of our Ring Day, Sophomore Gathering, Junior Prom, Blood Drive, and many other class projects. A very sweet, kind, and understanding lady, she has always made herself available whenever we needed her. The greatest part of our success as a class is due to Mrs. Gorst. As one student said, The class wouldn ' t be the same without her. We thank you, Mrs. Gorst, from the Glass of 1979. SCHOOL ADMINISTRA- TION ROGER ROUSSELLE. It doesn ' t just hurt me. The whole At- tleboro football team feels the pain. You see. Doc Steams was the trainer at Attleboro High the past five years. When I heard of the death of Mr. Steams, I cried like there was no tomorrow. I could have the rest of my life to tell you about Doc Steams but that wouldn ' t be enough. Doc Steams was cool, man, when the guys on the team needed someone to talk to about problems in the family or in school. Doc was always there to listen. If we lost a game. Doc was there to cheer us up. He always had a smile on his face. Not just speaking for myself, we loved Doc alot and there is nothing I can say or anyone else for that matter to express the team ' s and my deepest feeling for Doc. I wish I had told Doc how much I loved him; it may be too late but I ' m going to pray to God. I ' m gomg to tell God how much I love him and God will tell him for me. Doc, I miss you already. Please God, tell him that the Attleboro High football team loves him with all their hearts. Doc Stearns may be gone but his memories will live on in all our hearts. Every night before I go to bed, I pray he receives my loving thoughts. I love you, Doc, and will miss you. JoeHudsoD, Jr. Attleboro High Student WILLIAM P. DOC STEARNS 1925-1978 WILLIAM P. Bethesda, Md. β’ 4 A Tribute to: Mr. Thomas Crowe After five years as head coach for football at AHS, Tom Crowe is retiring. His 27-1 9-3 win- loss record only tells part of the story of the type of coach Attleboro is losing. Coach Crowe was a teacher, a coach, and a friend to his students. Through his guidance, hundreds of athletes have gone to success in later life, either on the college football field or in business. His athletes thank him and wish him the best of luck. 39 FOOTBALL Front row: J Hudson, R Chase, T Hanewich, C. Conley, B. Fuller, G. Gouveia, S. Dubuc, T. Smietana, S. Wilkinson, M. Dede Vaughan; Secretary, Linda Flanagan; Treasurer, JUNIORS CLASS OF 1980 Our Junior year promises to go down as one of tlie most memorable β not only in our minds, but in the minds of everyone we encounter. We are undoubtedly the most spirited class in the school, and plan to prove this fact once again by winning the spirit contest, and producing another victo- rious float. The dance that we sponsored reaped success. On the Sunday afternoon following the dance, the Junior and Senior girls took to Tozier-Cassidy field for an afternoon on the gridiron. We regret to say that the Sen- iors took the trophy for the second year in a row, by beating our girls 12-8. From all of us, congratulations for a well-executed and hard-fought victory. On the weekend follow- ing the game, we Juniors started what promises to be a lasting tradition; Informal Get-Togethers; the first being a picnic. It was held on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Slater Park. Such activities are just further examples of our tremendous class spirit and unity. Our fund-raising was in January of 1979 and went towards the reduction in price of prom tickets. Our Junior Prom was held on May 1 1 , 1 978 at the Blue Hills Country Club in Canton, Massachusetts. At this time, we would like to wish each and every member of the Class of 1 979 the best of luck, and may you always carry with you the fond memories of the times you had at Attleboro High School. β Junior Class President, Rick Shea 1 128 SOPHOMORES SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Jay Rixon β president, Ren6e Duquette β secretary, Ann Murphy β treasurer, missing, Danny Sullivan β vice-president. CLASS OF 1981 Participation is the key word for the Class of 1981. Upon entering our Sophonnore year, we realized that it was time to get our act together, and work with each other to make our class Number One. An early start on our float was proof enough that we have spirit. We will be a part of every spirit contest there is throughout the year, showing that we have what it takes to make a great class. In November, we sponsored a dance, to start off our fund raising activities. Within a few weeks, we sold and renewed magazine subscriptions. Before the second semester we had to have ordered our class rings. Our next major event was the one we were all looking forward to; The Sophomore Gathering, held o n May 19. In order that we might start next year off on the right foot, one of our last activities of the year was a car wash and bake sale. Besides engaging in projects that directly benefited the class, we set a time aside in the spring when we pro- vided a service for a community organization. With the full year that we have had, the Sophomore Class will not go unre- cognized. The Sophomore Class President Jay Rixon. 1 29 President, Pam Miles, Vice-President, Mike Antosca: Secretary, Jane Medeiros; Treasurer, Julie Smithi. FRESHMEN Class of 1982 As September of 1978 approached we looked upon school as a new insight to fear We did not feel like full fledged members of the student body, as we had yet to elect class officers. Most of the Freshman stu- dents were new to the curriculum and many of the extracurricular activities had begun without us. Soon October was upon us. Class officers were elected. We had begun to adjust to our new surroundings. The Freshman class became recognized as part of Attleboro High School. Plans for the year ahead were on the drawing board. The Freshman class held its first fundraising activity on Saturday, the 28th of October. We had a bake sale at Fer- nandes Market to finance our Thanksgiving Day float. During our first year at Attleboro High School our spirit will grow. The class of 1 982 will look back on its Freshman year as the beginning of an experience not soon to be forgotten. β President Pam Miles 131 LEARNING FOR LIVING 134 136 Drafting Commercial Design 139 141 142 U3 144 147 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Tammie Payette, Secretary; Elaine Brathas, President; Karen Leddy, Vice-President; David Rullo, Trea- surer. 150 WENDIE ADAMS PEDRO ALICEA WILLIAM ALLARD BRADFORD ALLEN WENDIE ADAMS β Wen 36 Holcoti Drive. JAMES DOYLE March 21, 1960 β October 17, 1975 To Jim (Boopie): For us it was the beginning of high school For Jim it was the end. It was the end of a life that was filled with joy A joy which was found by hunting outdoors A joy which was found in a new motorcycle A joy which was found as a Pop Warner Football All-Star . . . But his joy was not all for himself. He made it present in all of us who were not near him. It is sad to think this joy is not here today For his joy made for all of us a better day. β from a close friend Thomas Moore 222 The Class of 1 979 is extremely lucky to have so many terrific advisors through these four years at AHS. In our freshman year, we started off with Mr. Orzechowicz and Mrs. Anderson-Gorst, and after Mr. Orzechowicz left, Miss Dale Frey, Miss Paula Sol- litto and Mr. Marc Koller took his place. These people gave their time and energy to guide and supervise our class officers and students. But they were more than teachers to us; they are wonderful human beings who have devoted themselves to us. We can ' t thank them enough, for when we graduate, the Class of 1 979 will miss Ms. Frey, Ms Sollitto, and Mrs. Gorst because they became our friends and supporters during these high school years. We wish all of them luck and happiness in the future, and hope you keep fond memories of us as we will of you. Thank you. 223 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR was so scarf Deifi iTrtie freshm ' en entering a huge high school. We had never even known two- hirds of the kids in our own class. Unaccustomed to this type of environment, our minds were recep- tive to new ideas. We wi r timid but qi| ly l pcame acquainted with the large school and each other. After settling down, oui firstjstudent leaders were elected. They were Michelle Gosselin (Vice Presi- dent), Diane Cota (Secretary), Maureen Fox (Treasurer), and I. With the election came many activities and fund-raising events. Ah, yes! Who could forget the great freshman float? A lot of time, effort, and fun were put into building this float in Aprile Goodwin ' s garage. In the aj)- we yvere also introducing ourselves to the lighter part of high school life. Periodic school dances ' wfere a first for us. These dances supplied us with a way of meeting new friends and comances: During the rallies we displayed our great freshman spirit by trying in vain to out-sell and out-class the upperclassmen. As the year progressed, the high school was not a new frontier for us to tackle, but a way of life to which we were getting accustomed. The freshman year was one of importance because it helped mold us and guide us to our individual goals. We had three more years to look forward to with wonder and enthusiasm. 1 MB Tony Savastano Freshman Class President SOPHOMORE YEAR I remember so clearly our sophomore year. That was the year the class of 79 really became a part of this school. It seemed impossible at first because our treasury was in debt and we had all finished a rough freshman year. Then, Karen Leddy (Vice President), Helen Livingston (Treasurer), Lois Morri- seau (Secretary), and I tried our best to make our sophomore year a memorable one, and we suc- ceeded. The class of 79 will go down in A.H.S. history as being the first sophomore class to have a sophomore social gathering and to get our high school rings. We ended the year having a great deal of money from various fundraising activities. What our class did in that one year was just the begin- ning of all the accomplishments yet to come. Elaine Brathas Sophomore Class President 224 Ih W V junior year BII With two years behind us, the class of 79 entered school for what pronnised to be both a memora- ble and exciting junior year. The new class officers Hector Moore (Vice President), Lois Morriseau (Secretary), James Friedman (Treasurer), and I were just as ready as the rest of the class in making our Junior year a success. Besides the officers, the class was equally well represented by the Student Council Members: juniors Diane Cota, Will Nakshian, Grace lida, Richard Cardinale, David Rullo, and Elaine Brathas. The year began with a list of activities that would hopefully benefit the treasury as well as the spirit of the entire school. The first fundraising event of the year was a bake sale and car wash. Unfortunately, it rained that day so the car wash was cancelled but the bake sale brought in some money. From that, we purchased a number of kazoos which were sold at the Bombardier ' s football and basketball games. In October, we sponsored one of the most controversial dances in the history of A.H.S. The dance featured an area band Pegasus which sparked a flame of rowdiness that Attleboro was not accus- tomed to. It was very profitable for us because of the large group attending, but stricter rules had to be implemented as a result. It had been a super dance in the students ' viewpoint but the administration felt control of the numbers had been lost. Therefore, dances were cancelled for a few months. After the issue of the dance, the annual Powder Puff football game was held, which pitted the junior girls against the senior girls. The event attracted a crowd that is non-existent at other games. The fans got what they paid for as they watched the juniors beat the seniors, 8-0. Before we realized it, Christmas was upon us and the Juniors grouped together and put their best efforts forth in the annual Deck-the-Halls Contest. We did our best job and thought we deserved to win, but we were beaten by the sophomores in what we considered a weighted decision. But it was fun anyway and we had a happy holiday season. After the New Year ' s came a proposed junior-senior Valentine Mixer which was schegy d for February 1 1 . Because of the Great Blizzard of ' 78, however, the mixer was cancelled and nJver ' escheduled. After what seemed to be yelrs, the snow disappeared and spring was finally upon us. The junior year was almost history . Our next task was the P.S.A.T. ' s, which marked that it was time for the Junior Prom, held on April 28th atlne King Phillip Ballroom in Wrentham. Because of previous candy bar and donut sales, the cost of the tickets was lowered a few dollars. The prom, featuring Clock- work was a great success. Before the night was over, Jill Simkins was chosen as prom queen and in the court were: Hilary Hall, Valerie Ha gerty, Joanna DeRiso, Anne Gilson, and Roberta Bevelaqua. They danced to the theme song If . ! , After the Junior Prom was ended, thb remaining days were spent looking forward to summer vaca- tion.-lhe beaches, and of courge ur Senior year. Our Junior year proved that the class of 1979 was extremely spirited. It was a super year and hopefully the spirit and enthusiasm of a class as great as this will be continued into our Senior year and throughout our lives. Greg Gulino Junior Class President 225 β 1 e nad at 1 979 had finally come. With seTOryear ' It was so hard fo believe that weTiaQ already become seniors and the coming of the 1 978-1 979 school year Karen Leddy (Vice President), Tammie Payette (secretary), Dave Rullo (treasurer), and I knew we had to start working at the end of our junior year to plan a mem- orable senior year. Heading our Student Council were four seniors, Richard Cardinale, Grace lida, Diane Cota, and Will Nakshian. We had Filomena Botelho, Neil Gagnon, Connie Pohoiek, Jolene Cro- nin, Greg Gulino, and James Bell as our representatives, with Kathy Wadick as our publicity chairper- son. Three women have always stood by our class and are always there when we need them, our class advisors: Mrs. Linda Anderson-Gorst, Ms. Dale Prey, and Ms. Paula Sollitto. At our kick-off assembly, along with informing the class of all the fall events, we also distributed candy for everyone to sell. I was so pleased with the amount of people who volunteered to sell candy. Our sales went very well thanks to people like our top sellers, Mike Lattari, Celeste Pereira, and Dee Duffy. The week of October 16 will certainly bring back a lot of laughs. It was the senior-sponsored Spirit Week. We had a Mix ' n ' Match Day, a Hero Day, a Hobo Day, an unbelievable Toga Day (without the food fight), and a Blue and White Day. Duhng the whole month of October, senior girls were shaping up, going to countless football prac- tices in preparation for the Senior-Junior Powder Puff Football Game, and it certainly paid off. With Helen Livingston scoring both touchdowns, we beat the juniors 1 2-8. The next thing we knew, November came, as did our prom, which over 570 people attended. With Freebird being our theme, anyone can see that our class was ohginal. I don ' t believe I ' ve ever seen β so many people enjoy the music at a Senior Prom as I did at ours; and that ' s what made it so special. Prior to the Turkey game, which followed a week after, the four classes got together for a Parade of Floats through the center of Attleboro. The best-made float was ahead of the others leading the way to the Tozier-Cassidy Field. As December came, post graduation plans were on most of the seniors ' minds, but that didn ' t stop anyone from getting involved with his class. There was a great amount of help for the Senior Blood Drive held on December 1 5. It was on that day that I was really proud of the other seniors in my class. We hoped the Drive in April would be just as successful. After the holidays, we knew at the next five months would be the most important and that we wer- en ' t coming back next year. Jm With the February snow, ffe was our Senior Winter Festival, which brought sliding, skiing, and bonfires. March brought us our Greaser Day and the Greaser Dance, sponsored by the Seniors and F.S.A. The Donkey Basketball Game will bring back so many memories. (I think some of us are still sore!) Class night. Senior Breakfast, and the Reception soon came to all of us and faded out as memories. Then graduation soon entered upon us. It ended one of the best years of our lives, but most important it was the last time the class of ' 79 would be together as a whole. never really cared how much money we made or how much spirit we showed, even though we Inded up with a lot of both. What ' s always mattered to me is the unity and closeness of the class. I think we can all leave Attleboro High School knowing that we were a good, friendly and very down-to- earth class and I can ' t tell you how proud I am to be a part of it. AIR!! AIRiii 269 AS FAR AS YOU CAN SEE Four short years ago we all came to this school, each a total stranger to even himself. Since then we have grown, we all have many more friends, our minds are now aware of who we really are. When this year is gone, we won ' t be coming back to a place we have known so long and so very well. I close my eyes and look back to times I thought would never end. 270 As my eyes open again, m y future is plain to see and I won ' t have any more doubts of wfiat the future brings. I open my eyes and look straight ahead to a lifetime full of success. Now I realize just what lies ahead. The future is very bright as far as I can see! You can go as far as you can see. β Mark C.
