TATTLETALE Attleboro High School Attleboro, Massachusetts Dedication A fine athlete himself, Coach Cassidy has succeeded in instiilin ; in the boys on his teams the strong desire to win, tempered by a sense of fair play and good sportsmanship. By his own exemplary character and loyalty to his teams and the school, Coach Cassidy serves as an excellent model for the boys under his guidance. All of us, whether players or spectators, would like to express our appreciation for the many outstanding teams he has led to victories and championships — for the surge of pride and unity of spirit we always feel when an AHS team takes the field. In sincere gratitude for his devoted service, inspiring leadership — and for simply being the man he is, we dedicate the 1970 Tatlletale to Mr. James F. Cassidy. MR. JAMES F. CASSIDY Director of Physical Education Head Coach of Basketball and Football Melissa Phillips, co-editor; Mrs. Edith Turner, advisor; Cathleen Joyce, co-editor. Foreword When you read this foreword, you will realize that another school year is drawing to a close. For seniors, it will be our last year at Attleboro High. During the past three years, we have shared many experiences, some happy, some sad. Soon, all we will have left will be the memories of these occasions. We, as the co-editors of the 1970 Tattletale, have chosen IMAGES AND EX- PRESSIONS as the theme of this yearbook. Images, like memories, are hazy pic- tures of school days past, which we all hold in our minds. Expressions are the thoughts put into words which supplement the story told by the pictures. Our ex- periences of learning in the classroom, cheering our teams to victory, participating in extracurricular activities, dancing at the prom, listening to the A Cappella Choir, and receiving our diplomas, have all been compiled, and the thoughts we have con- cerning these occasions have been recorded. All we ask of you now is to make your memories complete by reading this book with your friends, and reliving the years at A.H.S. through IMAGES AND EXPRESSIONS. Cathy and Melissa 3 Su|).Tillt. Roger Spriggs was a man of many interests who did much for the youth of Altleboro, both as a teacher and Faculty Athletic Manager. He was also instrumental in initiating the Kiwanis Trade School Award for the outsfandinfr vocational student. Mr. Spriggs was a remarkable man whose word was seldom questioned because of his vast knowledge and dedication to the teaching of others. He learned as much as possible about everything and passed this knowledge on to us. We, the students of Attleboro Vocational Technical High School, consider ourselves most fortunate to have been enrolled in his classes. Man.., .N.llrl DAR GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD 142 Mb 1 II 1 Class History The bell that called us from vacation To a higher education Rang the fall of sixty-seven, Rang as it rings every year, And a new class entered here. Our class would he number one-hundred (Sony Class of sixty-nine). We would work, as you can guess. To make it closer to the best. With pep and go and zip we came; Old A.H.S. was not the same. We clamored loud at upperclassmen; We denied we were the lesser men For being sophs, for after all. Good things can come in sizes small. Juniors then, superior by far To little sophs we thought we were. We elected Diane Brennan Steve Ferreira and Mo Scullin To represent our sophomore class. More competent they were to pass The test and do the task. To give our sophomore class a word On the student council board. Steve Ferreira was our prez; And who did treas — All our class funds, though small and thin, V ho but Wendy Wallenthin? With secretary Lawrence and vice-president Snyder, With all these officers to guide her. Our valiant class did try To look the future in the eye. Our football heroes we did cheer Throughout the whole successful year. On Thanksgiving we proved our worth When we easily defeated North In that ' Mud Bowl ' in the next town Too bad North, we put you down. 148 In basketball, the same sweet story Of our team ' s increasing glory; We put Durfee up a tree an ' Then we went and clobbered Feehan. In dramatics we weren ' t slow; We had our own terrific show. The theme was ' Now, ' if you remember. It was presented in November. No matter how they tossed the dice, With Mr. Genest and Mrs. Price To guide our way and direct us. It would be impossible to best us. We worked hard and tried our best And it was a great success. When the season became estival We had and held our drama festival. Though sophs, we shared the prize again ' Best Actress ' went to Julie Kane. A good year had to end at last And we ' d become the junior class And after summer ' s grateful rest again We returned to try our best again. Now we were the junior class We were to find we weren ' t the last, In (juality or in numbers. In our student council members. Many runners tried to win. But we stayed with Diane Brennan, Steve Ferreira and Mo Scullin. Of new members, we had four: Casserly, Lawrence, and two more: To Judy Baumgartel and Barb Blais, As to them all, we grateful were For their time and for their effort; We only hope that we were worth it. With Ferreira still our president. And two officers from last year resident, Only one new face did appear That was to fill the vice-president ' s chair. Mel Phillips was this one new person We could have picked a more worse one. On Turkey Day our ' boys in blue ' Beat the stuffin ' outta you-know-who. We once again did North defeat; We made them beat a glum retreat. With victory that made us tall, And turkeys there awaiting all, Returning home, we were not slow; North was, though, ' cause they ate crow! In basketball we far from wrecked Our chances to go on to Tech. Our team gave their best and more; Our season score was twelve to four. A record good, you must agree, an ' Though we lost one game to Feehan, ' ON TO TECH ' our motto was, And we got there ( in a bus. ) Dramatics we did well-in; The variety show was ' Tele-In. ' With Mr. Genest and Miss Kelsh, you see, (and with hosts Messrs. Rocha and Landry) Our show would of the l)est be. In spring the senior play was ' Our Town. ' The actors all had their roles down Pat, and from where we sat The applause, it seem ' d was ten thousand that Of Laugh-In ' s lonely little clap. The actors, after the show. Gave thanks to Mr. Thibodeau, Director of the senior play. Representatives were soon after on their way To Boys ' and Girls ' State, there to see What processes make our state and cities free. Brian Casserly, Paul Currie, and Pat Ferrara were To go, but to be completely sure That someone could go if they could not, Three more were ready on the spot. Alan Currie, Bill Brouillard, and Judy Woll were To fill their several places. And there were other cases Or interest in our government. Gary Gagne did represent Our school on Good Government Day; He tried his best in every way. Soon after that came that happy day When we left, school ended. And our separate ways we wended Until all paths met and ended In the last route we all would tread Together, for as someone must have said, All good things must end at last. Even the years we shared must pass. Here it was, here at last! Our year to be the senior class! That noble creature. Brahmin, ruler. The ancient-righted, last-year high-school-er! That we were, both one and all. Though next year to fall To the lowly rank of freshmen. We ' d still try our best, men. To make our alma mater proud That she had teached all our crowd. First on our schedule was to elect, Choose and sanction (and select) Our student council members nine To represent us the too-short time That we would be the senior class — (At last! At last!! At last!!!) Steve Ferreira, Judv Woll, Barbara Blais (and that ' s not all) Neil Spellman and LaLiberte. And still three more, you see. Bill Brouillard, and Lawrence (Bette) Brian Casserly and Judv Baumgartel — (And if you try to rhyme ' Baumgartel ' You will find there ' s only ' Warmgartel ' So do not tax the poet ' s brain To try to rhyme that name again! ) — 149 Tlu ' st ' (lid lead our senior class year ith oiii officers (the same as last year). The setiior prom came in Novemher. Instead of May, if you remember. Dee Wendell was the prom (jueen; And happy were the seniors seen At the ' Veims de Milo to celehrate On certaiidy the most formal date In all the senior year. This year the variety show was Simplv called ' Hoyotoho. Our directors Miss Zahler and Miss Kelsch were, And our efforts they did spur, And our efforts successful were. Dee Wendell led our school cheers; She, Joyce and Bette since their junior year Had practiced hard and helped To spur our cheers, our joyful yelp; Arid with the help In our senior year, of Bar!) Hindley They made the weather rather windly With cries to cheer our foothall heroes To keep our opponents down to zeros In their scores, while we triumphed With our scores both big and high-umph. On Thanksgiving Day we cheered with reason At the end of our football season; For at the end of the game, you see. It was an A.H. victory. Our victory (jueen was Diane Brillon. After our victory, though not willin ' North captains came to visit Hilda. Football co-captains Snyder and Silvia Chaperoned North ' s visit to our Hilda And say hello; of course, ( you know). That ' s all they ' ll ever say, (ho-ho). Three years, dear Hilda, you ' ve been ours, We ' ve kept you from the April showers. The summer ' s heat, and autumn ' s frost, And from the win ' try blasts of December We shielded you. so please remember Next year to come back home again; Come back and ne ' er do roam again, For we ' ll be in the stands to cheer And see you home again next year. (Sigh, please.) For the football centennial we fought Feehan; Wendy Wallcnthin was our (jueen. The Bristol County Chamj)ionship was a tie Among Coyle, Feehan and our guys. Meantime, in December, Marcia Nittel became a member Of a very small group ( of one person every year) Who is chosen good citizen for the D.A.R. In basketball our score did dive By one game only. Eleven to five Our season score was, not bad, we think. Intellectually in the rink Our math team fought, and in the pink They were; Taunton. P ' oxboro, King Philip they i)eat with The Curries, Fremault, Spooner, and Smith And Lorice Al-Amir, the lone senior girl, it would seem. Of all the seniors on our team. What the spring holds in store Is our play, and much more, The Matchmaker our play ' s to be. With Mr. Genest here to see That things go right and to direct us A hit ' twill be and we foresee That success will greet our play. There still awaits Class Day and the Reception And our very, very last day When the future ' s op ' ning gate Will finally our whole class break Into people who once did share The years that we remember here.
