ATTL EBORO. MAS SACHUSETTS MR. WILLIAM WESTON We. the class of 1965. take pride and pleasure in dedicating our yearbook to a teacher who. in his two years at A.H.S.. has won the respect and admiration of all who have come in contact with him. Throuph his senior Enfrlish and his remedial reading courses, we have learned the power of writing, the joys of reading, and the importance of empathy and understand- ing in our relations with others. His classroom doors have always been open for any student seeking knowledge, friendship, or advice. We thank him for having helped make us more mature, more responsible young adults. As a token of our apjjrecialion for all you have done for us. we dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. William Weston, whom we shall always remember as a truly great educator. TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY ' ' H j ACTIVITIES Z ' - . SPORTS MUSIC SOCIAL L IFE ADVERTrSEME FOREWORD A yearbook is a memory book. It enables us to look back over our years at Attleboro High, and })rings to mind fond memories of the friendships, challenges, and experiences of those times. In the future, when we think of the class of ' 65, another familiar memory will come to mind— the New York World ' s Fair of 1964-1965. For this reason, we have chosen the World ' s Fair as the theme of this yearbook. But, beyond this, the years spent in high school bear a certain resemblance to a fair. The people, activities, sports, music, and fun that make high school what it is are equally necessary to the making of a good fair. We, the editors of the 1965 yearbook, invite you to join us in reviewing our three years at Attleboro High throughout the following pages— COME TO THE FAIR! 1 In keeping with the theme of this yearbook, the class of ' 65 has adopted the slogan of the World ' s Fair as its motto: PEACE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING Tattletale Staff Business Staff: Business Managers — Nancy Small, Beverly Swanson; Nancy Babbitt, Gail Baumgartel, Linda Blais, Deborah Bliss, Terry Cantor, Linda Carlson, Linda Charlesworth, Mary Coppola,. Charlie Linda Senior Class Officers lanii !■lohnvon — Sc( rct irs Dennis O ' Kccfp — Treasurer 126 Class History SOPHOMORE YEAR Our entrance into Attleboro High School was especially significant because we were the first class to begin and to graduate at the new Attleboro High School on Rathburn Willard Drive. We were fortunate in another respect, too; the upper- classmen were just as lost around the eight-building school as we sophomores. Along with the new high school came a new assistant principal, Mr. Paul F. Kelley, who came to A.H.S. from Marshfield High School. Our class, after patiently waiting for the juniors and seniors to elect their of- ficers, campaigned and voted to bring the following people into office: Pres., Gayne Nerney; Vice-Pres., Suzanne Suits; Secretary, Jan Johnson; Treasurer, Donna Ferrara. Starting off the year ' s events were elections for the Student Council, which was cut down in membership and the constitution changed. The new members from our class were: Carolyn Clinton, Gayne Nerney, Suzanne Suits, and, alternate Cynthia Hales. The Durfee rally was a special note, for, because the auditorium hadn ' t been finished by then, it was held in the concert shell at Capron Park. Following a successful football season, during which Nick Barney and Tom McKenna captained the A.H.S. team, we were to celebrate a tie with North Attle- boro (6-6) in the annual Turkey Day game. Al Zito received the L. G. Balfour Award for the outstanding player in the game. At the ensuing Victory Dance, Diane Bussiere reigned as sophomore queen. John Shockro, an outstanding ball-player in his own right, was the only sopho- more player on the Varsity team of the 1962-1963 basketball season and was the high scorer of the season with an average of 10.1 per game. Even though we acquired so much with our new high school, we had to give up an outstanding teacher, Mr. David K. Israel, who returned to his Alma Mater, Harvard University, to continue various phases of his education. He was head of Attleboro High ' s English Department. The Senior Class play in 1963 was another first for A.H.S. It was the first musical to be put on by the school. Representing our sophomore class in the pro- duction was Carolyn Clinton, Marilyn Gilson, Gayne Nerney, George Leonard, Tom Audette, Carolyn Smith, and Roy Lyon. On May 8, a Scholastic Achievement Night, cor. isting of a banquet and awards ceremony, was held at the Highland Country Club. The highlight of the evening was guest speaker Sam Levenson, humorist and educator. Cheerleaders for the following year were chosen in May: Carolyn Smith, and Karen Sylvia and Diane MacKinnon as subs. Majorettes chosen for the next year were Judith Wilbur, Elaine Brasier, Chris Andrews, and Lynn Desrosiers. The Sophomore dance, Sweet Shoppe Hop , held in May, was a great success because of the efforts of the sophomore class. To mark the closing of our sophomore year at A.H.S. was the purchase of our class rings, when we realized that we were almost upperclassmen now. JUNIOR YKAR When the fall of September, 1963, began, we returned to A.H.S. as full-fledged juniors — upperclassmen at last! Of course we had more responsibilities than last year, but with added responsibility comes extra privileges; such as a seat in the middle of the auditorium instead of way in the back! Within the first two weeks Student Council elections took place. Janice Johnson. Sherry Snyder. Drew Ward. Dennis O ' Keefe. Carolyn Clinton and alternates Terry Cantor and Gayne Nerney were elected to represent our class. To lead our class as officers in our junior year, we elected Al Zito as president: Sherry Snyder, vice-president; Donna Bajnoci secretary; and Cindy Halesm. Treasurer. On October 31st ten girls were awarded their Tri-Y bows. They were Dale Johnson. Donna Bajnoci. Janice Johnson. Marilyn Gilson, Kris Swenson, Dede Mac- Kinnon. Terry Cantor. Carolyn Clinton. Cindy Hales and Sherry Snyder. On November 22nd while listening to a concert by the Air Force band, we heard the shocking news of President John F. Kennedy ' s assassination in Dallas, Texas. Attleboro High School joined the country in mourning the loss of the young president. A.H.S. ' s football season ended successfully with a 14-6 victory over our arch- rival. North Attleboro. Dale Johnson was crowned head of the victory dance. The annual National Honor Society sponsored Variety Show. Around the World in X) Minutes was held January 11. 1061. and was declared a great success. With the onset of the basketball season, we saw our boys turn in some very fine performances on .the court aided by the junior members of the team. As a result of our team ' s hard work and fair playing, we ended up in a two-way tie for the Bristol County League Championship with Coyle High School of Taunton. We were proud of our boys at Tech Tourney even though we lost our first game on March 3, 1964. to Somerville w ith a score of 66-61! At the annual science fair held in March, Carol Gigliotti was the grand prize winner. The senior class play. The Night of January 16th . was held on April 21th and 25th. It was a great success with the help of many junior students. Leslie Cameron gave a fine performance as the accused murderess. Lynd Murphy. Brad Johnson. Gavle Pierce. George Leonard. Marilyn Gilson. Sandra Dusseault and Granville Richmond added to the cast of characters. Representing our class at Girl ' s State were Elaine Killough and Carolyn Clinton as alternate. We were also represented at Boy ' s State by Al Zito. Neil Cassidy, Robert Gross and Felix Barlik. Excitement filled the air in May as everyone wondered who would be chosen for National Honor Society, election to which is based on outstanding scholastic ability and qualities of leadership. Congratulations went to Felix Barlik. Adelaide Brown. Neil Cassidy, Leslie Cameron. Carolyn Clinton. Francis Frietas, Thomas Gariepv. Marilyn Gilson, Robert Gross. Cynthia Hales, Elaine Killough. Ann La- berge. Karen Moksu. Carolyn Smith, and Sheryl Snyder. Once again it was time for the co-editors of the Tattletale to be chosen. Carolyn Clinton and Sheryl Snyder became our co-editors of the 1965 Tattletale. On Mav 7th new cheerleaders were chosen to replace those graduating. The junior girls elected were Karen Moksu. Sherry Snyder, and alternate. Mary Coppola. It was announced that Judy Wilbur was chosen as head majorette. The annual Scholastic Achievement Banquet was held in the latter part of May. Our second year at A.H.S. finally drew to a close. As we had expected our junior year was full of wonderful experiences, but we knew our last year as seniors at A.H.S. would be even better! SENIOR YEAR Seniors at last! Our happiness waS marred only slightly by the realization that soon we would leave A.H.S-. forever. To lead our Student Council was Al Zito, president; Carolyn Clinton was vice president; Donna Bajanoci, secretary; and Neil Cassidy, treasurer. The senior members on Student Council were: Janice Johnson, Sherry Snyder, Robert Gross, Gayne Nerney, John Shockro, Drew Ward, Sue Suits, Kris Swenson, and Grace Wintringham. The officers elected to lead our senior class were Drew Ward, president; Terry Cantor, vice-president; Janice Johnson, secretary; and Dennis O ' Keefe, treasurer. It was a pleasure to have a foreign exchange student, Kamsiah Mohammad, from Malaya study at Attleboro High. She was an honorary member of the Student Council, and a member of Tri-Y and the Modern Dance Club. George Leonard, an exponent of Beatlemania, was forced to leave A.H.S. when he refused to cut his hair. The school committee voted to suspend and finally to ex- pel the mop-topped youth. Our morale was considerably heightened when the Bombardiers defeated Durfee with a score of 14-13. The Cheerleaders ' Dance followed, which was a great success. John Shockro and Leonard Lallier proved to be capable co-captains throughout the football season. Despite our loss to our rival. North Attleboro, we ended the season sharing second place in the Bristol County League with Durfee High School. Grace Wintringham was chosen Queen of the Victory Dance. Tri-Y elections were held in October. Senior members who were elected were Diane Bussiere, Elaine Brasier, Judy Baker, Karen Moksu, Betsy Washburn, Grace Wintringham, Sue Soucy, Sue Suits, Leslie Snow, Debbie Bliss and Kamsiah i Mohammad. Robert Gross was elected as Good Government Day Representative, with Brad Johnson as alternate. During the spring Bob spend a day in the State House in Boston. Carolyn Clinton was chosen by the student body and faculty members as D.A.R. Good Citizen. The Variety Show, WAHS T.V. , sponsored by the National Honor Society was presented on November 20th. The show was directed by Mr. Francis O ' Connell. The arrival of basketball season saw veteran John Shockro lead seniors Jay Gilmore, Neil Cassidy, Roy Lyon, Ray Pouliot, Bob Gross, Al Zito and Dan Duffy in a strong effort to take A.H.S. to Tech Tourney. In the Bristol County League our standing as we went to press was a three-way tie for first place with Durfee and Coyle, our only defeat being to Durfee High School, with a score of 52-49. Because our deadline is in January, we are forced to omit many of the exciting events that will occur in the last half of our senior year. We are looking forward to Tech Tourney, our Senior Play, Senior Prom, and Reception, ana all the other events which compose the ending of three wonderful years at A.H.S. 129 NAME c;KORGE ADAMS JEANNE ADDY l.YNN ANDERSON CHRISTINE ANDREWS DALE APRIL MARILYN ARRUDA PRISCILLA ASPINALL DAVID AUDETTE DONNA AUDETTE roM AUDETTE robert bailey donna bajnoci judy baker arthur barton (;ail bau.mgartel FELIX BARLICK LINDA BARBER KATHLEEN BEAUPRE CAROLYN BELL SUSAN BIANCHI DONALD BLACKWELL GEORGE BLAIS CINDY BLAIS LINDA BLAIS GEORGE BLASER LINDA BLISS LINDA BOISVERT DAVE BONVOULOIR RICHARD BOYNTON CAROL BRAGG ELAINE BRASIER GEORGE BRILLON STEVEN BROCKWAY APRIL BROUSSEAU ADELAIDE BROWN DA NNY BURKE RICHARD BURR (il.ORIA C DERO LESLIE CAMERON TERRY CANTOR NORMA CARLSON WILLIAM H. Our class is proud to have Carolyn Clin- ton as its D.. .R. Good Citizen for 1965. Congratula- tions, Carolyn! Each high school in Massachusetts elects a senior student who best displays good character and quali- ties of leadership to represent them on Student Gov- ernment Day at the State House in Boston. Our class was proud to have Robert Gross as this yfear ' s representative. Congratulations, Bob! Merit Scholarship Letter of Commendation Winners 1. to r., G. Winslow, G. Nemey, C. Clinton, R. Gross, S. Davis. Each year, high school juniors throughout the United States take the National Merit Scholarship examinations. Although scholarship awards are limited, a few students rank high enough to receive special recognition. This year, Attleboro High is more than fortunate in having five students who re- ceived letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Foundation. 142 Boys ' State Delegates are chosen for Boys ' State on the basis of scholarship, extracurricular activities and in- terests. Participation in this ex- perience affords the boys the op- portunity to learn about the func- tions of g;o rnment and to meet and exchange ideas with the dele- giates from communities through- out the state. Robert Gross, Felix Barlik, Neil Cassidy, Al Zi Girls ' State Each year the Ai can Legion and the Leg- ion Auxiliary sponsor a program for girls, Girls ' State. This model state is governed by the girls themselves. This provides an excellent experience in learning about govern- ment and cooperating with other people. Cafeteria Staff Standing: J. Varone, K.
