Attleboro High School Library Media Center 100 Rathbun Willard Drive Attleboro, MA 02703 ATTLEBORO H IGH SCHOOL ATTLEBORO flASSACHUSETTS ' I 3 Dedication During the past three years at Attleboro High School many of us have come to know a man whom we all honor and respect. Through his biology classes we have gained experience and knowledge. He has constantly devoted his time to the boys on our football team and has helped guide them through seasons of glowing victories. One could always turn to him for advice, patience, and understanding. For the knowledge, devotion, and friendship you have given us, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude by dedicating our yearbook to you, Mr. Robert Bray, whose presence has brightened the lives of everyone here at A.H.S. Zable of Contents foreword ,1 0 Since, by tradition, the Tattletale used to be the last issue of the Blue Owl literary magazine which has recently reappeared at A.H.S., we thought it fitting to bring back tradition by using the blue owl as the cover of our Tattletale, the last to be composed within old A.H.S. Our thanks go to Michaele Welch who was good enough to design our cover. This imaginary state, modeled on our state gov- ernment, is governed by the girls themselves. They hold elections, and certain members are chosen to attend Girls ' Nation. Ursula Pickart Karen Burke Qood Citizen The D.A.R. Good Citizen- ship Award is presented to a girl of outstanding character in the senior class each year. She is chosen by the members of her class and the faculty. The girl must possess these four qualities to an outstanding degree — dependability, service, lead ership, and patriotism. Our class is proud to have Jacqueline DeSantos as its D.A.R. Good Citizen for 1962. 1 12 Horns State Delegates are chosen for Boys ' State first on the basis of scholarship. Then extra curricular activities and interests are brought into consideration. Boys ' State provides an excellent experience in learning about government, but more important, in meet- ing and cooperating with many different people. Qood Qovemmmt Keprcsmtativc Every senior class in Massachusetts selects one of its members to be its Good Government Day Representative. Our Senior class was represented by Joanne Hunt who took part in the Good Govern- ment Day activities at the State House in Boston. Congratulations, Joanne ! Class SOPHOMORI ' YEAR Can anyone forget our first day at A.H.S. in September, 1959? We were both hopeful and a httle frightened about the future, eager to do well and determined to make our class of 1962 one of the best ever to graduate from A.H.S. Our first step in making our class one to be remembered was electing four of our capable, hard-working class- mates as our officers. The results of the election showed that Vin O ' Donnell had been elected president; Tom Carpen- ter, vice-president; Jackie DeSantos, secretary; and Art Nunes, treasurer. How thrilled we were when our football team beat North in our first Thanksgiving game as A.H.S. students! That very same night Mike Welch reigned as sophomore queen of the Victory Dance. Helping to make our class a success at A.H.S. was Chris Thomae, who won first prize in the annual science fair. Our sophomore dance, Parisian Spring , turned the gym into a street lined with cafes, leading to the Eiffel Tower. Thanks to the efforts of chairman, Jackie DeSantos; advisor, Miss Marino; and the other members of the committee, our dance was very successful. As the end of the school year neared, excitement increased over who from our class would be chosen as cheer- leaders and majorettes. How pleased we were to learn that Karen Burke and Evie Weiss had been elected to the cheering squad! Also making us proud were Bonnie Blackburn, Carol Grocki, Cheryl Parker, Pam Pelletier, and Ursula Pickart, who were chosen majorettes! As the last day of school approached, we looked back on our sophomore year with pride. We had lived up to our hopes and expectations. But we looked eagerly to the future, because our junior year promised to be even better. JUNIOR YEAR Summer vacation of I960 came to an end; and we returned to A.H.S., this time with more confidence than we had had the year before. After all, we were upperdassmen now! As the end of September rolled around, we were all so happy to be wearing our class rings. We will always cherish and be proud to wear them. To lead our class as officers in our junior year, we elected Gerry Vachon as president; Don Lange, vice-president; Jerry Balser, treasurer; and Lois Denham, secretary. This year ' s football season was very successful thanks to the combined efforts of our hard-working team and our new coach, Mr. James Cassidy. The highlight of the season was our Thanksgiving Day win over North, 12-0. We were especially proud of Tom Carpenter, who was awarded the first annual Balfour trophy for his outstanding performance in the game. Reigning as junior queen of the Victory Dance was Evie Weiss. The Tri-Y election rolled around, and we tried hard to choose the girls we felt would best serve the club and represent the class. The nine girls honored were: Barbara Bleasdale, Karen Burke, Carolyn Costine, Lois Denham, Jackie DeSantos, Pam Pelletier, Ursula Pickart, Evie Weiss, and Mike Welch. With the onset of the basketball season, we saw our team readying itself for some tough competition, especially in the Tech Tourney. The boys turned in some very fine performances on the court aided by the junior members of the team. As a result of our team ' s hard work and fair playing, we ended up in a three-way tie for the Bristol County League championship with Fairhaven and Durfee High Schools. We were very proud of our boys at Tech Tourney where they succeeded in reaching the semi-finals and were finally defeated by strong New Bedford High School. Carol Grocki headed our junior dance committee, and her hard work and that of the committee helped to turn the dance, Pagan Festival, into a success. Representing our class at Girls ' State were Karen Burke and Ursula Pickart as alternate. We were also well represented at Boys ' State with Eric Savolainen, Vin O ' Donnell, and Bob Higginbotham serving as delegates; and Don Lange and Tom Carpenter as alternates. At the annual science fair this year, Chris Thomae again carried off first honors for his project. I 14 History As the Honor Society induction approached, we were all excited and eager to know which students would be honored for their outstanding scholastic achievement and their qualities of leadership and citizenship. Those inducted were Alice Benschneider, Barbara Bleasdale, Tom Carpenter, Anne Cathcart, Lois Denham, Jackie DeSantos, Larry Gower, Joe Houde, Connie Newkirk, Vin O ' Donnell, Pam Pelletier, Corinne Raposa, Eric Savolainen, and Chris Thomae. Once again it came time to elect new cheerleaders to replace those graduating. The junior girls chosen were Carolyn Costine, Donna Mendes, Debbie Sheehy, Sally Sanders, and Mike Welch. Evie Weiss was chosen as head cheerleader. It was also announced that Bonnie Blackburn was chosen as head majorette. After much hard work on their yearbook dummy, Pat Hannan and Debbie Sheehy were chosen co-editors of the yearbook. We knew they would do their best to make our yearbook the greatest ever. Our second year at A.H.S. drew to a close; and as we had expected, it had been even better than our first. SENIOR YEAR As we entered our third and final year at A.H.S., we realized that now, finally, we were seniors! We were determined to make our last year our best. At the Thanksgiving rally, the election results for our senior class officers were announced. To guide us through our last year at A.H.S. were Gerry Vachon as president, Steve Bianchi as vice-president, Carol LaFontaine as treasurer, and Lois Denham as secretary. Under the guidance of Mr. Coding and the co-chairmen, Pat Hannan and Stan Barac, the senior social dance committee made our dance, Offbeat Autumn a spectacular success. Witches on rocket ships, a huge orange pumpkin, and a scarecrow provided a Halloween-ish atmosphere to keep in harmony with the season. Eleven more girls were chosen to represent our class as members of the Tri-Y service organization. They were: Anne Cathcart, Charlotte Edgecombe, Carol Grocki, Pat Hannan, Diane Isabelle, Stella Mackinlay, Donna Mendes, Sherrill Pierce, Debbie Sheehy, Sue Smith, and Karen White. Congratulations to Jackie DeSantos, who was chosen our DAR Good Citizen, and to Joanne Hunt, who was our Good Government Day representative! Once again we screamed ourselves hoarse in support of our football team which, under the leadership of co- captains Tom Carpenter and Mike Shockro, turned in an excellent record for the season, tying with North for the championship of the Bristol County League. Although North defeated us in the Thanksgiving Day game, they had a difficult time accomplishing this feat, a fact which shows up in the close score, 14-12. Karen White was our senior queen at the Thanksgiving dance which was held a day after the game. The Student Council functioned smoothly under the leadership of its able president Jerry Balser. Other officers were Gerry Vachon, vice-president; Vin O ' Donnell, treasurer; and Jackie DeSantos, secretary. As the yearbook deadline comes into view, our outstanding basketball team, under the able leadership of co-captains Don Lange and Bob Higginbotham, have just finished the season, taking second place in the Bristol County League. Our team is now heading for Tech Tourney. We are certainly proud of them and hope they go all the way. Although we have to close, there are still many important events of the year to come: the science fair. National Honor Society Induction, the Senior Prom, the Senior Reception, and finally our graduation exercises. We, the last class to graduate from old A.H.S., can look back on our high school years with pride in knowing that we have done our part in upholding the A.H.S. spirit, tradition, and high record of achievement.
