Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1957 volume:

We are pleased to dedicate the 1957 Tattletale to a man who, in just one short year, has gained the respect and admiration of the entire school. Be- cause of his fairness, understanding, helpfulness, and respect for others, we are proud and honored to dedicate this yearbook to our principal. Dr. Thomas H. Richardson. Theme — Time 1 We have chosen Time as the theme of our 1957 yearbook. Time is of great importance to us all — a time to laugh, a time to mourn, a time to rend, and a time to sew. As Time goes on and you re-read this, your year- book, may you recall all the happy times we enjoyed here at Attleboro High. T is for the thousand jobs which we ' ve been doing here, I is for improvements, made from year to year. M is for the memories that enlighten us today, E is for eternal friends from whom we ' ll never stray. 1957 J. KNOWLES M. LYONS Co-Editors MRS. MacDONALD— c w5or 141 i LITERARY STAFF— C. Superintendent During the last three years, I am sure that the class of ' 57 has contributed a great deal to the life of A.H.S. by uphold- ing the standard and worthy traditions which have been part of its honored past. It is my hope that you will continue to follow these high ideals in your years beyond high school. May I extend to you my very best wishes for success in your future endeavors. Principal You are graduating from high school and passing into aduhhood at a most challenging period in the development of mankind. The world of man is changing faster than man himself. During your lifetime you will see whether this beauti- ful Frankenstein-monster which man has created will turn and destroy its creator. You will not only live to see this crisis — you will help to determine its outcome. Good Luck Our Timely Interests ' ' Leisure is the time for doing something useful. ' ' N. Citizen-M ARY LYONS 1954 Z sf i History 1957 SOPHOMORE YEAR On September 8, 1954, the class of 1957 stood be- fore the cnrious and forboding doors of the Attleboro High School wi h great expectations and hopes for the future. We gave four people the honor and privilege of being officers of our class: President, Jim Cassidy; Vice President, Jack Logan; Secretary, Lee Keane; Treasurer, Mary Lyons. Things began to roll merrily along. Bernie Proia. Dianne Hill, Berthe Mason, Lee Keane, Pat Ward, Roger Swanson, Betty Dowgiala, Wesley Lee, Colleen McGee, Maureen Devine, Joyce Pitas, Wayne Sim- mons, Don Weatherbee, Joan Bryson, Bob Paradis, and Philip Michalik served on the Student Council. On Thanksgiving Day at Hayward Field, our class was well represented by Ray Galvin, Jim Cassidy, Pete De Lutis, Jim Smith, Tom Gaboury, Joe Bolton, Charles Cartier, Brad Pitman, Doug Bennett, and Matt Hiney. Berthe Mason was elected sophomore queen at the Victory Dance. School spirit and athletic ability was displayed by Pete DeLutis. Ray Galvin, Bob Greene, Bernie Proia, Roger Swanson. John Henriques, Jim Cassidy, Tom Gaboury, Dale Fuller, Jack Lovely, Ed McKinnon, Paul Schultheiss, Joe Bolton, Ron Gaudreau, Jim Smith, and Warren Davignon at the Armory and at the field. A multitude of girls — Nancy Reynolds, Gail Benoit, Judy Frost, Nancy Robertson, Josie Benson, Evelyn Audette, Carol Johnson, Betty Dowgiala, Marilyn Bandilli, Joan Bryson, Jackie Kerkhoff, Sylvia Gif- ford, Barbara King, Bernice LaFontaine, Betty Ann Burek, Merry Mawbey, Carolyn Mayers. Nancy Lar- son, Janice Ladabauche, Joanne Costa, Muriel Cour- chesne, Shirley Kiefer, Virginia Shang. Mary Tomlin- son, Carol Brennan, Pat Mclntyre, Betty Lindberg, Janet Irving, Marcia Briggs, Maureen Devine, and Nancy Merrill — participated in basketball, softball, bowling, and modern dance. Our class dance, Springtime in Paris, was a complete financial success. The hard-working com- mittee under the direction of our class advisor. Miss Daley, and Mrs. Gerlack, the art director, did an excellent job. Carol Smith, Maureen Device, Nancy Reynolds, Jackie Kerkhoff, Ed Hayslip, Sara Anne Morris, Joyce Pitas, Nancy O ' Connell, Sandra John- son, Janet Irving, Dianne Hill, Pat Ward, Jim Cassidy, Jim Smith, Joan Martin, Jack Logan, Mary Lyons, and Lee Keane. June came and our sophomore year ended as all good things do; however, we looked forward to one day in September when we would be upperclassmen. JUNIOR YEAR The calendar said September, 1955, and we were back for our second year in Attleboro High School. To lead our class through the trials and tribulations of the junior year, we chose Jim Smith as president, Ray Heald as Vice President, Berthe Mason as secre- tary, and Mary Lyons as treasurer. We were repre- sented on the Student Council by Jim Cassidy, who served as treasurer, Joan Bryson, Maureen Devine, Barbara Doyle, Jackie Kerkhoff, Ray Heald, Sara Anne Morris, Bob Paradis, Betty Stevens, and Pat Ward. When the team went to North for the Turkey Day game, Joan Knowles, Lee Keane, Berthe Mason, and Bev Weiss cheered them on. Junior majorettes were Betty Dowgiala, Maureen Johnson, and Bernice La- Fontaine. At the Victory Dance that night, our junior queen was Lee Keane. Representing the class of ' 57 at Hayward Field and the Armory were Pete DeLutis, Jim Smith, Brad Pit- man, Jim Cassidy, Tom Gaboury, Matt Hiney, Bill Haley, Bob Greene, Dick Wild, Ray Galvin. Roger Swanson, Bernie Proia, John Henriques, Joe Rossi, Bob Roy, Paul Schultheiss, Ed MacKinnon, Joe Bol- ton, Ronnie Gaudreau, and Warren Davignon. In girls ' basketball and track, we had Betty Dow- giala, Jackie Kerkhoff, Marilyn Bandilli, Barbara King, Sue Gagner, Judy Frost, Marcia Briggs, Innes Rose, Carol Brennan, Carol Johnson, and Donna Small making known the fame of ' 57. Our ring committee got busy and picked out the design from which our rings were chosen. Remember the Squares vs. the Rounds? The ring committee included Jim Smith, Jim Cassidy, Ray Heald, Pete DeLutis, Matt Hiney, Bob Paradis, Berthe Mason, Bev Weiss, Mary Lyons, and Lyn Evans. Ten junior girls were initiated into Tri-Y, and we were both proud of them and sorry for them when we saw their weird initiation outfits. They included Betty Dowgiala, Bev Weiss, Maureen Johnson, Lee Keane, Berthe Mason, Joan Knowles, Sara Ann Mor- ris, Mary Lyons, Jackie Kerkhoff, and Maureen De- vine. January quickly rolled around, and to prove that the class of ' 57 was looking into the future, we chose a modernistic theme for our dance. It was the Mobile Whirl, and was one of the most memorable events of the year. The hard working, and fore-sighted com- mittee consisted of Ray Heald, Ken Brough, Mary Lyons, Dan Nolin, Jim Smith, Donna Small. Berthe Mason, Brad Pitman. Sandra Johnson, Marcia Briggs, Barbara Doyld, Sara Anne Morris, Wayne Simmons, and Diane Greany. Our junior advisors. Miss Andrews and Mrs. Dean, deserve much credit for making it and our other junior activities successful. As the warm weather made the trees outside Mr. Willey ' s room burst into bloom, as well as romances and other spring highlights, we found the class of ' 57 making headlines. Sara Anne Morris served, as our delegate to Girls ' State, and Cynthia Pickering was the alternate. Roger Ashley, Dave MacDonald, and Jim Smith went to Boys ' State, with Jim Cassidy and Lenny Fitzpatrick as alternates. Sixteen sample yearbooks were passed in for the competitive editorship of the Tattletale. Mary Lyons ' and Joan Knowles ' dummy was judged the best, and they became our co-editors. In a very impressive ceremony, we saw twelve of our classmates honored by being tapped for National Honor Society. Sue Gagner, Pat Mclntyre, Cynthia Pickering, Barbara Doyle, Maureen Devine, Diane Greany, Sara Anne Morris, Joan Knowles, Pat Ward, Jim Smith, Jim Cassidy, Roger Ashley — we were very proud of them. June drew to a close with all its festivities, and we realized that the next time yearbooks were signed, pictures exchanged, and reception plans being made, it would be for us. SENIOR YEAR With September of our Senior year, we began to realize that time was running out on our careers in A.H.S. To make our last year a memorable one, we elected Jim Smith, President; Betty Dowgiala, Vice President; Berthe Mason, Secretary; and Mary Lyons, Treasurer. ' 57 ' s representatives on the cheering squad were: Lee Keane, Berthe Mason, Heads; Bev Weiss, Joan Knowles, and Barbara Doyle. Strutting down the field were six senior majorettes: Betty Dowgiala, Head; Bernice Lafontaine, Maureen Johnson, Marcia Briggs, Carol Brenna, and Pat Ward. With flying feet the men of ' 57 ran on to the grid- iron, diamond, and gravel at Hayward Field, and pounded on the court of the Armory. Pete DeLutis, Ray Galvin, Dick Wild, Bernie Proia. Ronnie Gaud- reau, Jim Smith, Jack Lovely, Matt Hiney, Jim Cas- sidy, Brad Pitman, Charles Cartier, Doug Bennett, Tom Gaboury, and Brad Redding made A.H.S. athletics memorable this year!! The girls were active, too; Carol Brennan, Jackie Kerkhoff, Innes Rose, Marilyn Bandilli, Sylvia Gif- ford, Judy Frost, Betty Dowgiala, and Evelyn Audette made the J.V. and varsity basketball teams hum. Pat Ward pounded the gavel as student council president; Sara Anne Morris was vice president, and we had Jim Cassidy, Card Corbett, Roger Ashley, Diane Greany, Charles Coding, Judy Frost, Jackie Kerkhoff, Betty Lindberg, John Mclsaac, Paul Schul- theiss. Bob Paradis, Bernie Proia, Jim Smith, Roger Swanson, Don Weatherbee, and Don Johnson repre- senting us. Autumn winds blew chill, and people hurried to the Witches Walk, the Senior Social. The Committee, Roger Ashley, Maureen Devine, Ed Hayslip, Jean O ' Neil, Jackie Lovely, Jim Smith, Sheila Malloy, Beth Steven, Donna Small, Berthe Mason, Mary Lyons, and Betty Dowgiala worked hard to make it a memorable event. Much credit for their hard work all year long also goes to Miss Haggerty, Miss Connelly, and Mr. Lacivita, our Senior Class Advisors. The Saints Came Marching In for the traditional jam session at the Victory Dance; Jean Brochu. a senior, reigned as queen of the festivities. The last day of November, and everyone was in a flurry. The Senior Play, Kind Lady. was pre- sented successfully to an enthusiastic audience. The cast included, Diane Greany, Innes Rose. Carol Bren- nan, Marlene Gates, Sara Anne Morris, Berthe Mason, Pat Ward. Don Weatherbee. Dick Vose, Roger Swan- son. Jeff Gunn. Brad Pitman, and Bob Paradis. and the backstage crew also worked hard. Billy Haley was stage manager, and Sylvia Gifford student direc- tor. Thanks go to Mr. Willey, our Senior English teacher, who directed it. We saw ten more of our girls initiated into Tri-Y: Marcia Briggs, Carol Brennan, Bernice LaFontaine. Pat Ward. Barbara Doyle. Judy Frost, Pat Mclntyre. Mary McCarte, Cynthia Pickering, and Joan Bryson were the ones who made it. In recognition of service and character, we chose Mary Lyons, D.A.R. Good Citizen, and James Smith, our Good Government Day representative. February came, and who will ever forget our Senior Prom. Fan- tasy of the Sea? As the spring passed, we saw more of our class- mates initiated into the National Honor Society. We also saw the underclassmen eagerlv trving out for various activities, planning for next year, and we realized with a pang that we were leaving. The gvn balcony, Bobby ' s, front row seats in the auditorium. — all these things we passed on to the incoming seniors. A.H.S. was ours no longer, but part of it travels with us as ' 57 steps into the future. 3 V£ The time has come, so let us share, £ iJ Z ( Z Our will, prophecy, and questionnaire, f t Name Will Prophecy Most Memorable Moments AGUIAR, S— Crewcuts to longhaired Sophs.— Join Dave in Marines — Dinners at Hewie ' s ANDERSON.
