THE TATTLE TALE THE CLASS DEDICATION We, the Class of 1954, respectfully and affectionately dedicate this, our yearbook, to COACH HOWARD A. TOZIER. Our four years at Attleboro High School have been nnade fuller and richer through our contacts with him as athletic coach, teacher, and friend. His inherent qualities of sincerity, integrity, and fair play have been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to all of us. His athletic teams have learned to play the game fairly, but to play hard, to carry out their assignments manfully, and to play together as a team. These concepts have extended beyond the athletic field and will guide us as we go out to play the larger game of life. o F iss - CO-EDITORS and TATTLETALE ADVISOR CO-EDITORS Carol Schupbach Marilyn Smith ACTIVITIES Dianne Paille Shirley Wood ART EDITORS Martin Bernheimer Robert Lepper Staff— Carroll Collins Ralph Spinney Donald Quimby SUPERLATIVES Nancy Newman Maureen Bellavance CLASS V ILL Virginia Cooper Dolores Germain Jackie Ellsbree Dorothy Stevenson PHOTOGRAPHY Charles Longenecker Stewart Money TYPISTS Rose Hebert Eleanor Marcoccio Norma Higgins Carol Wallenthin Jean Proulx PROPHECY AND QUESTIONNAIRE Janice Bears Sylvia Dauplaise HISTORY Marcia Flemming Beverly Peach Joanne Ewen BUSINESS STAFF Manager— Dorris Paille Sandra Seyboth Beverly Olson Joan Benson Marjorie Almeida Roy Schlenker Phyllis Shoales David Longenecker Junior Assistant— Grace McCormick Carol Nygren James Hoddie Joan Braga BUSINESS ADVISOR Miss Molly Shapiro TATTLETALE ADVISOR Mrs. Evelyn MacDonald THEME MUSIC Glad songs, sad songs, silly songs— and love songs— hearken to the music that we have shared in our four years at Attleboro High School. Music has surrounded us, from the crashing brasses of the band— to the drov sy overtones of a mild June day in study hall, from the dreamy tempo of a dance orchestra to the excit- ing cadence of a football rally. Together we have sung the popular songs of the day. We have joined our voices in our school songs— and finally we stand shoulder to shoulder to sing our class song. For this our yearbook we take music as our theme, and we invite you to join with us in a pilgrimage of song and rhythm as we travel through our four years together. In later years when school days are over and we are far apart, may this book be a song of memories, ever more mellow as time goes on. SENIORS CLASS WILL FRESHMAN YEAR In the year 1945 the Atomic Bomb was discovered, but that was nothing compared to what Mr. Chandler discovered when the class of 1954 entered the hallowed halls of Attleboro High School. It was evident to everyone that we had that certain something that is necessary for a great class— a something called oomph. Beyond a shadow of a doubt we were THE class. After much heavy carrvpaigning, we finally ernerged with the following class officers: Joanne Ewen, as President; Peter McCormich, as Vice President; Patricia Smith, as Sec- retary; and Stuart Money, as our Treasurer. With such capable officers to guide us we were set for the exciting and prosperous year to come. Our UNDEFEATED Freshman Football Team was an achievement that could never have come about without the able assistance of Bob Anderson, Dick Barrett, Doug Davidson, Dave Doucet te, Nick Haselton, Bruce Johnson, Bob LaCasse, Ron LaCasse, Bob Lepper, Earl Morrisey, Dave Payette, Art Plante, Phil Proulx, Jimmy Rich, Gerry Ryder, Harvey Sargent, and Jackie Tannock. Playing that fascinating game of basketball were Doug Davidson, Dick Griswold, Nick Haselton, Al Henderson, Bob LaCasse, Ron LaCasse, Dick Lake, Bob Lepper, Dave Payette, and Norm Terrian. Our glorious name was upheld on the baseball diamond by Bob Anderson, Dick Gris- wold, Nick Haselton, Bob LaCasse, and Ron LaCasse. Certainly to be remembered are Cherry Cole and Pat Snhith who were chosen to play for the Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team. Maureen Bellavance, Doug Davidson, Joanne Ewen, Doreen Hartwell, Rosalind Kenny, Dianne Paille, and Phyllis Shoales saw that we were well represented on the Student Council. Another event which added honors to the Freshman Class was the selection of our two majorettes. Joanne Ewen and Beverly Peach. Our first class dance, the Attleboro High School Showboat was a tremendous success, both socially and financially. This was brought about by the whole-hearted efforts of the class officers, the dance committee, and the art staff. Our Freshman days were over and we looked forward to our next year as perky little Sophomores, full of big ideas and plans for making our class even better than it already was. SOPHOMORE YEAR With the frustrating and bewildering events of our initial year at Attleboro High School behind us, we really had our feet on the ground and were off to smooth sailing. We had reached the exalted position where we could pass on advice, helpful and otherwise, to those who now walked in our footsteps of a year ago. First on our agenda for the year was the election of officers. Coming out on top at the end of the enthusiastic campaign were Martin Bernheimer, President; Doreen Hartwell, Vice President; Pat Smith, Secretary; and Phyllis Shoales, Treasurer, who were chosen to shoulder the responsibilities of the class. Elected to represent us on Student Council during this year were Maureen Bellavance, Doreen Hartwell, Rosalind Kenny, Dianne Paille, and Shirley Wood. We were mighty proud of the number of our classmates who appeared on our Bom- bardier squad— Dick Barrett, Dan Chestnut, Bruce Johnson, Bob LaCasse, Ronnie LaCasse, Bob Lepper, Dave Payette, Gus Roca, Gerry Ryder, and Dave Young. Adding vim, vigor, and vitality to the cheering squad was Pat Smith. Our class was also represented among the majorettes. Joanne Ewen and Bev Peach added spark here. It was thrilling to see all the basketball heroes at the armory, but how proud we were when we saw our own Car! Carlson and Nick Haselton increase the score. Our Sophs contributed much to making the girls ' basketball team undefeated throughout the season. Members from our class were Cherry Cole, Shirley Murray, Dianne Paille, and Dorris Paille. Roy Anderson, Dick Barrett, and Bob Lepper carried our athletic enthusiasm to the baseball diamond. Quite aoropos of the season was our social, Shillelagh Shindig on March twenty-first Our capable and diligent committee made this an event long to be remembered. With our second full year brought to a close, we anxiously awaited the day when we should become full-fledged upperclassmen. JUNIOR YEAR We entered our Junior year with much enthusiasm and with great expectations, joy- fully anticipating its many events. When the smoke had rolled back from the scene of the battle of our class election, we discovered the girls had again triumphed with Dorris Paille, President; Doreen Hart- well, Vice President; Pat Smith, Secretary; and Phyllis Shoales, Treasurer. Due to the untiring efforts of these officers and of the Dance Committee, our social the Mardi Gras was a financial and social success. In sports the class of 54 played an admirable part. The football team was glorified by Dick Barrett, Dan Chestnut, Carroll Collins, Bruce Johnson, Robert LaCasse, Ronald LaCasse, Bob Lepper, Dave Longenecker, Dave Payette, Gus Rocca, Gerry Ryder, and Dave Young. Our class starred in basketball with Carl Carlson, Nick Haselton, Bob Hatfield, Fred Naedele, and Jim Rich. On the baseball diamond we shone with Bob Crook, Olive De- Beck, Bob Lepper, Fred Nadele and Ken Witherell. The girls were not missing from the parade of sports. Pat Smith was still wonderfully representing the class of 54 in cheerleading. The band played and the batons flew with Joanne Ewen, Doreen Hartwell, Carol Schupbach and Marilyn Smith representing our class on the Majorette Squad. Our own Bev Peach was elected Head Majorette and led the band to some tricky high stepping. The girls ' basketball team had another undefeated season. This success was accomplished with the aid of Cherry Cole, Joanne Ewen, Shirley Murray, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille and Carol Carey. Strange things are happening is what everyone was saying the day the Tri-Y girls were initiated. These weird-looking characters were in reality Virginia Cooper, Jackie Ellsbree, Joanne Ewen, Marcia Flemming, Norma Guillet, Doreen Hartwell, Lorraine Lortie, Shirley Murray, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille, Pat Smith, Mary Jane Pedro and Phyllis Shoales. Toward the middle of our Junior year, our new principal, Mr. Gibbs, came to Attleboro High School. The Student Council carried us through a prosperous year, with its members including Martin Bernheimer, Virginia Cooper, Rosalind Kenny, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille, and Phyllis Shoales. The Ring Committee consisted of the class officers, Joan Braga, Norma Guillet, Charles Longenecker, Stuart Money, and Dale Worrall, who chose an attractive ring which was acceptable to the taste of the entire class. Martin Bernheimer, Rosalind Kenny, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille, Pat Smith, and Shirley Wood were welcomed into the National Honor Society. Our representatives to Girls ' State were Dianne and Dorris Paille, alternates; Shirley Wood attended and was elected Lieutenant Governor. She went on to Girls ' Nation to become Treasurer of the United States. Boys ' State was well represented with Carl Carlson, Martin Bernheimer, James Hoddie, Stuart Money, Ronald Quimby, and Roy Schlenker. With much regret we came to the end of our Junior year, yet eagerly we anticipated our Senior year. SENIOR YEAR We ' re Seniors! Those words seemed incredible to our ears! Yet in reality we had actually reached the acme of our high school career. It was with mixed feelings— some sad, some excited, some happy— that we started our last year in A.H.S. This year our class officers were not only to be the leaders of our class, but of the school, also. Great responsibility must be placed in them. Elected to those positions were Dick Barrett, President; Ron LaCasse, Vice President; Pat Smith, Secretary; and Dave Long- enecker, Treasurer. The class of ' 54 was represented on Student Council during our final year by Dianne Paille, President; Doreen Hartwell, Vice President; Maureen Bellavance, Gail Conlon, Dick Griswoid, Sue Henriques, Bob LaCasse, Dave Payette, Phyllis Shoales, and Ray Souza. Our gridiron boys received many a cheer as they led our team through a most successful season. Dick Barrett more than once added six points to our score. Other mighty important ' 54 ' ers on the squad were Bob LaCasse, Ron LaCasse, Bob Lepper, Dave Young, Ron Caruso, Dan Chestnut, Carroll Collins, Dave Longenecker, Dave Payette, James Rich, and Gus Rocca. Adding t o the prestige of our class out on the field was Pat Smith, our head cheerleader. Assisting her in cheering our teams on to victory were two other outstanding Seniors: Dinky Cooper and Phyllis Shoales. Leading the band down the field were also representatives from the Senior Class— Bev Peach, head majorette, Jackie Ellsbree, Joanne Ewen, Doreen Hartwell, Carol Schupbach, and Marilyn Smith— who did an excellent job. The first social of the year was presented by our class. Autumn Holiday held in October, was a tremendous success, due to the diligence and untiring efforts of the committee, which was made up of the class officers, art students. Cherry Cole, Marcia Flemming, Albert Kiefer, and Shirley Wood. Elected to Tri-Y were Joan Benson, Carol Carey, Sue Henriques, Nancy Newman, Bev Peach, Barbara Pike, Marilyn Smith, Dot Stevenson, Ruth Sumner, and Shirley Wood. There were no weird creatures this year, as those initiations have been discontinued. Our Victory Dance held Thanksgiving night was a great success, and Ellen Liscomb of the Junior class was elected Victory Queen. After many hours of long and constant rehearsing, the Senior Class presented The Eager Miss Beaver. Our outstanding class actors did a terrific job in making this such a hit. They were Alice Arenburg, Martin Bernheimer, Dan Chestnut, Dinky Cooper, James Hoddie, Charlie Longenecker, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille, Dave Payette, Gus Rocca, Carol Schupbach, and Shirley Wood, directed by Miss Dilts, Mr. O ' Connell, Mr. McKniff, and Carol Lindstrom, student director. Our Good Government Day representative was Robert (Nick) Haselton, while Dorris Paille was elected D.A.R. Good Citizen. Carrying the pride of our class to the armory were Nick Haselton, Fred Naedele, and Jim Rich. In girls ' basketball we were represented by Carol Carey, Cherry Cole, Joan Cute, Joanne Ewen, Dianne Paille, Dorris Paille, and Ruth Sumner. Our Senior Prom Sweetheart Cotillion was the most successful dance of the year and was arranged for us by the class officers, art students. Cherry Cole, Virginia Cooper, Marcia Flemming, Joanne Ewen, Albert Keifer, Nancy Newman, Shirley Wood, Kay Slattery, and Roy Anderson. Now we are at the end of our high school days. As we face the future, we will always keep in mind our motto, For they can conquer who believe they can.
