ATTICA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME 64 ATTICA, NEW YORK Coeditors: Debra Schlick, lla DiPasquale Production: Angela Pacella, Debra Schlick, lla DiPasquale Contributing Staff: Rich Rasmussen, Alex Rodak, Julie Maples, Shelly Embt, Suzanne Beck, Billie Lindsey, Tracy Lentsch, Owen McFarland, Bill Lepsch, Vickie Rykert, Lisa Bollin, Brian Fugle, Christine George, Anita Blocher, Kyle Bates Advisors: Mr. Kotula, Mrs. Schrader Cover Design: lla DiPasquale Photographer: Kyle Bates Honorary member Computer Expert: Travis Thompson The senior class of 1988 dedicates this year's Torch to an extremely devoted teacher and advisor. He has the ability to conduct his classes with organization and skill, while remaining amiable and easygoing. His curriculum and personality keep the classroom atmosphere interesting. As an advisor he has committed eleven years to a generally unappreciated organization. Countless hours of those years were spent helping his staff produce the Torch. He his often heard addressing his staff with the questions, So ... are we working tonight?”, or Who's staying tonight? Without the guidance and support of Mr. James Kotula, our yearbook would not have been possible. 3 5 Cindy Gephart — Purchasing Agent Edward Stores — Superintendent Joan Puccio — Secretary Edward Kirby — Business Manager lilfct'LiilrV Wl Mi BOARD OF EDUCATION: 1st Row: Denise Fugle, Shirley Ellsworth, President Florence Williman, Beatrice Pfaff; 2nd Row: Dr. Bruce Lamb, Vice President Anthony Cus-mano, Albert Audsley 6 NEIL 8ART0N, VICE PRINCIPAL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ALFRED FEENEY, HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL JUDY TRAUSCHT SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR THELMA WOOD SECRETARY lilllll m CONNIE DONNELLY GUIDANCE SECRETARY TAMMY AMEDICK COPY ROOM SUPERVISOR 7 1 q.lrliLtt BARBARA ALVUT, COMMERCIAL JAMES ARNOLD, SOCIAL STUDIES KYLE BAKER, SPECIAL EDUCATOIN TIM DUGAN, GUIDANCE ROBERT BUREY, ART CONNI CONWAY, ENGLISH JEFF BUSH, IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION WILLIAM COLVENBACH, SOCIAL STUDIES. 8 JOHN FREEMAN, SCIENCE FRANK FAVASULI, SOCIAL STUDIES JODI FISHER, SPECIAL EDUCATION TOM HAVENS, SOCIAL STUDIES LOIS FLAHIVE, SCHOOL-NURSE TEACHER MARGARET GEITNER, MATH CHERYL GOODRIDGE, COMMERCIAL OWEN GOULD, MATH 9 JANIS HEMPEL, ENGLISH SANDRA JURSTED, MEDIA SPECIALIST JAMES KELLY, MATH JAMES KOTULA, ENGLISH WINANNE KOTULA, HOME ECONOMICS DEBORAH HUGHES, FRENCH RICHARD LANDWEHRLE, SCIENCE DENNIS LEYDEN, PHYSICAL EDUCATION FRED MANGEFRIDA, SOCIAL STUDIES KATHY MCDONALD, ENGLISH JOHN McCARTY, TECHNOLOGY MARY JANE MIKOLAJCZYK, SPANISH STEVE OVERTON, HEALTH LEEANN PUGLIESE, MUSIC BILL ROHRING, MATH DENNIS SCHRADER, COMMERCIAL DALE ROBINSON, SCIENCE JULIA SCHRADER, GUIDANCE DON ROGERS, MUSIC JAMES ROLLER, SCIENCE PAT SANTORO, MEDIA CENTER AIDE MARC SEEGER, TECHNOLOGY KATHY SADLON, SCIENCE 12 STANLEY SLIVINSKI, SOCIAL STUDIES JOE STEPHENS,TECHNOLOGY LINDA SMITH, ENGLISH MARIE STROH, ENGLISH SUE TRETTER, SPECIAL EDUCATION 13 15 L’lUitlLLtlili Kenneth Abendschein Meka Aiken Eric Almeter Julie Anderson Monica Bartz Suzanne Becker Christine Benson Laura Bielecki Ellen Boshart Ray Boucher Bob Bove Chris Breton Tammy Bristow Jody Brunner Stephanie Calmes Shannon Carr Craig Chenaille Crystal Chmura Bill Clark Paul Clark Tom Cockman Pres.: Amy Perry. For lla the work began with getting elected. With the help of friends, posters were designed, slogans were developed, and speaches written. Her campaign theme of “You be illin' without lla proved effective and she was elected President. Since then lla says the job isn’t easy. “Government meetings often conflict with my school schedule”, she said. “Different attitudes made raising school spirit a challenge.” We would like to thank lla and the other officers: Jeff, Jamie and Tonya for giving their time and effort to improve ACS for everyone. Lauvain is located approximately twenty minutes from Brussels, the capital of Belgium. I stayed with the LaPorte family. I had a sister. Kristine(16). and my mother Josee. I had a great time. While I was there I visited all of Belgium. Holland, and England. Most young adults in Belgium are no different from us. They all have the same interests, feelings, and goals. The only problem I experienced was homesickness. It was very difficult for me to be away from home, for the first time, and for so long. Some day. however, I have fond hopes of returning. I learned a great deal from my experience and I found it rewarding and challenging. Julie Clark Lauvain. Belgium I am very glad that I came to the United States. I had a wonderful year in Attica. Before I came here, my opinion about the U.S. was that Americans were not nice people. Now. however. I realize that they are. Everybody that I know is very nice, my friends, my teachers, and most of all my host family. Everyone taught me all that I wanted to know about the United States. Thank you for all the great memories! Nawarat (Yong) Raynanon Bangkok, Thailand My experience in the United States has been really nice. There are a lot of things I did enjoy that I'm going to miss. First.the most important thing you need is a great family. I was very lucky and I'm very thoughtful to the Bates for all they did for me and for helping me so much. Then, it is also important to get involved in school activities, and make new friends. I really enjoyed all the teachers and friends in Attica, and I think it was great to get to know them. I also loved the extra-curncular activities, and all the sports in the American schools. I had fun with so many activities and with all that school spirit . I'm going to miss this and all the good friends I now have in America. Thanks a lot to my host family, and to all my friends for such a nice year! Paulo A. V. Crespo Portugal It has been a real pleasure to have the opportunity to be a part of the Attica High School Community. I have been enjoying many things here. I’m so happy with the school, friends, teachers, family, and town that I have found here. The United States is a little bit different from my home country, but the love” that I found here made the differences seem little. Many of you are part of some unforgetable. wonderful, and terrific memories in my life. I will miss you all when I leave, but I hope that someday we can meet again. Maybe in one class reunion, summer vacation in Brazil, or in some other way. I just want to thank you very much for everything, and may God bless you. Torch members are in charge of every phase of the book's creation. They plan the theme, design the cover, create each page layout, write all the copy, collect all the pictures. edit and proofread all the work. The work is often slow, and the staff, only a highly dedicated few. but those few can take a great deal of pride in knowing that this yearbook is really their creation. Mock Trial is a competition, sponsored by the Bar Association, which invovles a reinactment by students of a modern court case. Teams prepare both sides of the case (plantiff and defense) and compete with teams from other schools, with points being awarded on the basis of how well a case is presented. Six area schools competed in the Genesee County Mock Trial competiton on March 19, 1988. Attica had the highest point total in the first round, but lost to Elba in the elimination round. The team's very dedicated advisors were Mr. Colvenbach and Mr. Schrader. Attorney Michael Mohun served as the legal advisor. Mr. Feeney, Mr. Favasuli, Mr. Schrader, Mr. Colvenbach, and Mr. Mohun make presentations during the Alf Awards program. In June of 1987, a new Attica tradition was started with the presentation of the Alf Awards. These were presented for achievement in activities that were not academic, including yearbook and newspaper staffs, student government, National Honor Society, Office and Media Center assistants, Mock Trial, and class activities. Certificates were awarded to all nominees, and students selected most valuable in each group were given pins. The evening was well attended by students and parents, and it is hoped that the Alf Awards will become an annual event. GJ L L1 OJ w 01 Ui L fc 49 Row 1: R.Gauthier Row 2: M.Spinks, S.Lebaron. J J Ann Kirby, the captain of this year's squad, has cheered every year of her high school career. Her first year, as a freshman, she liked it a lot, and wanted to keep it up and try to improve. She finds it an enjoyable way to show her school spirit. One of the drawbacks of cheerleading is that it is very time consuming. Away games leave you with little time for other activities. Sometimes the pressures of being captain are a little difficult. She has had a lot of fun for the last four years with the other cheerleaders and players. 'aptains: Ann Kirby. The I girls put in many hard practices and improved 100%. The girls encouraged the wrestlers and supported them — matter what the score was. There were a lot of good times, and crying, but we were always making memories. William Shields November 1, 1969 100 September 28, 1984 Amanda Zielinski To the Class of 1988: Dreams What are dreams? They are what life is made of. If you have never been told to, I will tell you now, everybody can dream. Dreaming is a very important part of life. It will take you wherever you want to go, and you will do whatever you want to do. If you are told that you can never do something, you must say that you can. All things are possible, so you must think positive. Keila Guimaraes You have all come so far in your lives. You can have dreams and fulfill them. There will be a better tomorrow. You are all young. You are all beautiful. Dream, and you will be able to help the children of today have dreams of their own. All of you are human. You all have great wisdom. For I have just begun my dreams, and one of my dreams is coming true right now, for I am dreaming for you. You know what’s cool? It's when you're through with school! And when it’s finally done — You know you'll have more fun! Well it’s finally 88” And for the seniors it's over! Though the rest have gotta wait They'll be sure to stay sober! Down Duger, down, down, down. Duger, Duger. Down Duger, down, down, down. Yeah, sure we'll miss each other, But it won't be no bother, 'Cause we re growin' up fast And we’ll have a real blast! Now we wanna keep in touch As we drift apart, Starting life anew, Only now we're smart! By lla DiPasquale 120 1 1 1 1 1
