ME-VT-CT-MA NY REFUND 5c ATTICA SENIOR HIGH ATTICA, NEW YORK 0 VOL. 63 I 13943004 D E D I C A T I O N We, the class of 1987, would like to dedicate this year’s Torch to a teacher who not only puts forth much effort in her classroom but has given us hours of time and thoughtfulness as well. When we needed help with our Prom, she spent never-ending hours making arrangements and giving us the drive to finish on time. We knew that if we needed someone, she would be there to guide us along. She not only was dedicated to us as an advisor but also as a friend. She had a special way of dealing with us that didn’t make us feel inferior to her but led us to respect and love her. This year’s Torch is dedicated to our special friend, Mrs. Kyle Baker. 2 Seniors The Real Thing 3 Kathy ... is usually seen with Dave, Pam, and Lisa ... favorite memories are the times with Dave, juict cruisin, and Fridays over Christmas ... she often says “Well, I think ...” and “I don't know ... plans arc college, success. and fame. The girls team was led by eight seniors, including captain Jackie Stores, who all worked very hard at the skills, leadership, and drive that make a team. The juniors, with captain Penny Phillips, and sophomores provided the endless energy needed to push for the wins. We finished the season with an overall record of 7-9. Our season was a touch one, including all types of opponents. We will never forget the memories our letters hold for us. We will miss our seniors and good luck to the team next year! To be a successful cross-country runner, an individual needs a tremendous amount of self-motivation and pride. This was particularly true this past season, as only seven runners finished the entire season for the Blue Devils. Mike Bailey led the boys team to a 2-10 record, followed by Gary Theal, Alex Rodak, Bob McWhirt, Paul Pile and Chris Judge. Brian Pushnick was part of the squad also, until his family moved to Florida. Priscilla Mooney was Attica’s only female competitor. She won four girls’ races and finished second in the Genesee Region Invitational, thus earning All-Star status. Gary Theal was named Attica’s “Outstanding Runner” for his dedication and surprisingly fast improvement. 60 Seniors Captains: Brian Mike First row: S. McQueen, C. Glor, F. Bridgman, H. Rauth, L. We were very fortunate this season to make it to sectionals but lost to 1 Jefferson. Captain Heidi Rauth made the All-star team and Lisa Clark was awarded honorable mention. The success of the team was lead by first team outfield all-star, Ken Ham-mel and second team all-star pitcher, Dick Puccio. The team captured the Genesee Region Division 1 championship and proceeded to the sectional finals at Silver Stadium. Here they lost a heartbreaking, controversial game to Wayland. The outstanding feature of the 1986 baseball season was defeating Notre Dame for the first time since 1978! The final score was an upsetting 8-2. Softball The Girls’ Varsity Softball Team played a very tough season, although the fun and excitement prevailed over success. The girls, led by captains Denice McAnulty and Jackie Stores, finished with a record of 3-14. One of our highlights included the Oakfield tournament, in which we defeated Oakfield, but lost a close championship game. The girls, along with Coach Wendy Miller are looking forward to a successful 1987. Golf The 1986 edition of the Attica Varsity Golf Team finished the season with an 18-1 record, and went undefeated in the league. Eric Campagna won the county championship and, along with Brian Boucher, went to the sectionals. The team has gone undefeated in the league for 52 consecutive matches and is looking to extend the streak in ’87. If Attica can capture the league again this year it would mean four consecutive championships in as many years. Track The Girls’and Boys’ Track Teams were very well represented this season. The girls posted a 5 and 2 season while the boys had a 3 and 4 record. Each team sent players to sectionals. Heidi Rauth, Ginger Morton, and Dawn Nutty all advanced to the Meet of Champions and each did very well. Heidi competed in the Triple Jump and Discus, Ginger in the Shot Put and Dawn in the High Jump and 400 meter dash. The 1987 team looks very good as almost all of our competitors are returning from last year. Tennis The 1986 Attica Blue Devils tennis team was led by a first-year coach, Mary Asquith, who guided the Blue Devils to a league record of 8-2 and an overall record of 11-3. She was also named Coach of the Year. The team’s league record enabled us to capture a tie for the division title. A few individual players on the team were able to make the Genesee Region League All-Star Team. As a freshman, Jeff Hammel was named First Team All-Star at third singles. Other All-Stars were John Borycki at second singles, and Steve Hammel at first singles. Both Steve and John were named Second Team All-Stars. As a doubles team, they reached their way to the State Qualifiers in sectionals. In the team sectionals, the Devils gave it their best shot, but they couldn’t beat the defending champion, Haverling-Bath, losing by a score of 3 to 2. 74 Activities s T U D E N T G O V E R N M E N T With Mr. Feeney as our advisor, we had a successful year. We started with Homecoming Week. The rookie officers, Michelle Westermeier, Tonya Beitz, Wayne Koch, and the two year veteran, Fred Seiferth, planned the festivities for the year. At Christmas time we delivered sixty six baskets to families in the area. The Valentine’s Dance was successful and all the profits were donated to the Jessica Fund to help with the expenses of her heart and lung transplant operation. To offset the loss of the hockey tournament, we planned the first annual volleyball tournament. It took a great deal of hard work and planning to make this year the great success that it was. As Attica stumps ’em. The Brainstormers team, formerly known as It’s Academic, under the direction of Mr. Gould, had a very successful year. The team competed on Nov. 13 against Marcus Whitman H.S., whom they defeated 285-215. Advancing into the second round against Byron-Bergen, the team again came away victorious with a 150-125 victory. Feb. 12th was then the date for the quarter-finals competition against McQuaid Jesuit H.S. The team was defeated in this competition which aired April 25th on Channel 21. The team could have never been so successful without the long after school and Saturday question-drilling practices. Congratulations to the team on a superb year. 1 + 1=2? The Math Team was coached by Mr. Gould and competed against nine schools every two months. Each competition is divided into four separate tests. The individual tests are a 20-question, multiple-choice and a “compute the answer’’ test. The last two tests are more team oriented. A relay is run as the members use an answer to help answer the next problem. The team then works together solving ten questions. The team finished in fourth place in all the competitions with prizes awarded to the top individuals. The process of becoming a member is actually a difficult one: applications must be filled out which are then reviewed by a committee of teachers. After receiving a notifying letter of acceptance, new inductees are honored in school with a corsage. Then follows the induction ceremony,at night. After the ceremony, there is a party with the parents in the cafeteria. This year for fundraisers the NHS sponsored the Christmas Ball and the Hawaiian dance. Here, I could learn about the American way of life. If you travel in South America you will see the difference. I think if all the American people are like Attica High School's people, the American people are terrific! I feel really lucky being in Attica High, because I have been visiting other schools, meeting other people but it never made me feel comfortable. Here everybody has been nice to me. Together with Duck we will never forget the feeling of joy when we received our trophies. And who will ever forget the plaid motel in Virginia? As Juniors we did something out of the ordinary when Duck took us to the section finals baseball game. We believe we were the first high school band to play at a sectional baseball game. Next came the challenge to prepare for the Canadian Thanksgiving Festival in Kitchener. Although we didn’t place in the final standings, it was rewarding to perform for the Canadians, who gave us a standing ovation, and also to be on Canadian national television. Our trip to Virginia Beach was just as exciting. This Attica spirit wasn’t just felt at all these big events. We felt it at the most important places: in the band room, on the football and soccer fields, in our hometown parades and definitely in our hearts. We cannot thank Duck enough for showing us such a great outlook on life and teaching us that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It is with “pride” that we dedicate this page to him. But on June 21, 1987, the senior class will Say its final goodbyes And we’ll take with us the fondest memories Of Attica Senior High. Lori Boylin p E 0 P L E W E M 1 S S Mr. Lusky was assistant principal in our school for four years. He was a graduate of Kent State University and a social studies teacher at LeRoy Central School before he came to Attica. While at Attica he was Student Government advisor and also active in helping our hockey teams when we had the hockey tournament. Mr. Lusky was a friend to all and believed in us. He has now moved to the Middle School where he replaced Mr. Southard as Principal. We’ve noticed his absence and yes, we must admit, we’ve missed him. He will always be part of our memories of ACS. Mr. Nucci was a French teacher at our school for fourteen years. While he was at Attica he was also an AFS advisor and Drama Club advisor. He did many things with and for his students. He took them on field trips to see plays acted in French and also made trips to French Canada and France possible. He now teaches and resides in Monticello, New York. Mr. Nucci was a fun-loving teacher who will never be forgotten. He will be remembered by those of us who took his classes for saying “questions, comments, gripes, unhappiness, and discussions” and for giving us a relaxed and open classroom. Mr. Nucci will be forever in the hearts of those who knew him. Nous vous manquons.
