I found the school here to be really different, ond I wont to thonk the teachers who hod me in their closses for helping me ond having so much patience. A difference in my school in the Netherlands, for instonce. is that we don't hove the some class of the some time every doy First period Monday might be moth, but Tuesday first period might be English. From one week to the next.. Monday's schedule is olwoys similar to the next Monday, ond the some for the other days. You don't necessarily hove each subject every doy — for example, we hove moth only four rimes o week There ore olso some differences in the lows of our countries. One difference is thor we don’t hove o drinking oge Thor means I con visit o bor in my country whenever I wont ond I con drink whor I wont! Of course, if you're really too young, the bar owners won t let you in. Now. before I take oil the spoce in the whole yearbook, I wont to thonk everybody for giving me such o wonderful yeor. o super experience. ond terrific memories. We ll meet again Love to oil. ond especially my friends. I attended the Koningin Wilhelmino College in Culemburg (o 13.5 kilometer bike ride owoy) with 2100 Dutch students. My host brother Jasper, ond host sister Gillian were both helpful in making my yeor memorable. The Netherlands is o very beautiful country. The people ore very friendly. Yes, there ore windmills ond tulips ond some of the Dutch people do wear wooden shoes. I learned o great deal in the Netherlands. I will never 'orget oil that I've seen ond done there. I miss that beoutiful country ond oil its people. I hove fond hopes of someday returning. If you ore interested in meeting people, living in o different culture, ond seeing another corner of the world; you should go on on AFS exchange. It's both o challenging ond o rewording experience. Under the direction of Drama Club advisor, Mr. Nucci, the cost began rehearsal shortly after Christmas. The cost was to have their lines memorized by January 31 and were to continue a hectic schedule of four to five rehearsal sessions a week until the production was ready for the public. With a talented cast, musical assistance from Miss Pugliese, and the encouragement of assistant director Jennifer Merlau this production was guaranteed to be a resounding success. Eight reoms from Western New York schools moke up the competitive divisions. The competitions ore held four rimes during the school yeor, In October. December. Februory. ond April. A teom consists of eight members. The competition is quite o complicoted event. It is divided Into four seporore tests, eoch with its own structure ond rules. Port one consists of twenty multiple choice questions covering six moth cotegories which ore selected from o lorger pool of twenty-four possible cotegories. The six cotegories from the December morch, for exomple. were Geometry Pyrhogoreon Relorions, Lineor Equorions, Froctions. Ine-quollrles ond Absolute Volues. ond Arithmetic. In this rest eoch teom member works individuolly. The second rest is o reloy event in which the eight teom members ore subdivided into two four person reoms. Eoch person hos o different problem to solve. It becomes o reloy because the first person must solve a problem ond then pass his answer to the second member who will use this information to solve another problem. He will pass his answer on to the next teom member ond so on until the final member finishes his problem. This Is o rimed event with maximum credit for o final onswer in less than two minutes! If the flnoi onswer is not completed within eight minutes, no points ore earned. Port three is o forty minute Individual competition In which eoch member must calculate the answers to ten problems. Port four, the finol phase of competition, requires the ream to collectively solve ten problems. So you see the Moth Team competition is not for the weak. It is a demanding event, requiring both individual ond teom effort. Hots off to Mr. Gould, the ream advisor, ond our ocodemic competitors. M A T H T E A M 53 First Row: C. Kurke, S.Routenstrouch, J. She says the switch has been great for her and that it has many advantages. For Kathy, the day seems shorter now. She also has noticed an obvious increase in the number of students and teachers. Kathy also feels that her new curriculum is more difficult. Kathy claims one especially nice change is that she no longer must wear a school uniform. She has met many new friends here in the high school and has enjoyed all of the activities that she has been involved in. Football cheerleading has been one of those activities.
