So it is in life ---- a year, a day, a day, an hour. Upon these, shapes and forms and sizes of our lives are constructed. It begins the day we are born ---- the learning, the teaching, the urging. From elders, experience, books, slowly the form takes shape. Gradually it is molded into a young adult crossing the threshold into high school. This is the climax ---- the end of the beginning. The Torch - 1963 portrays this final form. Heartaches, headaches, happiness ---- all memories sizable in sentiment, recorded for lasting remembrance. TAB 2 LE 0F Dedication . . . Administration . . Attica Central School started the year by welcoming Mr. Gilbert P. Ball as its new head man. lt is his difficult task to admin- ister a big organization whose primary goal is the education of all its stu- dents for a useful and full life. Add to that major task the responsibility to the people of the school district to see that the affairs of the School are satisfactorily carried on. It re- quires the patience of Job, the wisdom of Solomon, and the love and understand- ing of and for people. Mr. Gilbert Ball, Doug Seig, Mrs. Rita Clark 3 Mr. Robert Shadbolt discusses one of the many day to day business problems with Mr. Joseph Cardinal. Uwhenever you need something done, just ask a busy person.n This might be the motto of the members of a school board. Elected by the peo- ple of the District, these men and women work long and hard to fulfill their responsibilities to the people. Their concern is to keep in operation a school system numbering over 1600 students. Authorizing purchases, building plans, hiring teachers and other school personnel are but a few of their tasks. Always they must an- swer to the public, while earnestly attempting to provide a healthy, attractive, working school atmos- phere. HI TORY From the past we hope to learn for the pres- ent and prepare for the future. Students receive a good foundation in New York State and United States History in Junior High. Here they receive the basic information toward understanding man and his world, In depth studies of Social Problems, World History, American History and Problems of Democracy in Senior High add to the mental growth of the students, In these courses, the student becomes more aware of his place in society and his respon- sibilities to himself, his country, and his world, fs r 3 , 34 So much of our lives are influenced by Mathematics. Here students learn to reason, think specifically and care- fully. This has been proved again this year in Attica with the acceptance of Akin Bener of Ankara, Turkey into A. C. S. Akin is an active member of the Senior Class, on the Student Coun- cil, and is very well liked by the student body. The other half of this program was successfully carried out again when Alan Ham journeyed to Denmark last summer. While there, Alan has many wonderful experiences as shown in the beautiful col- ored slides he took. Early in October, six Juniors applied for the AFS Americans Abroad Summer Pro- gram for 1963. They were narrowed down to Susan Tiffany and Mary Jane Weber who are anxiously awaiting the final decision from New York as to which one will go abroad this summer. Staff members use their study halls, after school time or whenever they can get free to do some of the endless work required to publish a yearbook. The staff is composed of seven members from each class. After ser- ving a year as probationary members, if the service has been acceptable, the freshman staff members are asked to stay on for the next three years. Each succeeding year they gain more knowledge about the production of a yearbook. As seniors they assume full responsibility for getting the yearbook finished. It is their duty to instruct the other staff members about the work to be done. Getting patrons, taking pictures, pasting, layout, typing, all involve decisions. In the Western New York Press Association for 1962, the TORCH re- ceived a red ribbon. The goal is for a blue one next year. The staff works hard to keep abreast of the latest happenings ' around Attica Central. This infor- mation includes school events, sports news, reports on meetings, honor roll, and other features. After much checking and figuring, the pages are then ready for the typists. This year there is something new on hand. The EAGLE presented its first picture page. At a special meeting, the Editor from the BATAVIA DAILY commented on the EAGLE, giving the staff much en- couragement, ggg much to work for. The big thrill occurred with the first printed edition. As a result of all this work, the EAGLE rated a red ribbon from the Western New York Press Association evaluation. The display cases are noteworthy of mention for their excellent designs. Posters advertising school events for the students and the public, deserve most flattering comment. The neat explana- tory signs designating rules and personnel are of great help to the stranger entering the building. Teaching and learning responsibility along with an eye for what looks good or right are important objectives of this organization. M LIBR RY CLUB Books! Books! Books! Signing out books, checking overdue ones, making up bulletin board displays also are a part of their experience. FREHE For the first time, we're an organized class. Freshman elect officers, collect dues, participate in various activities. If this isn't enough, we found ourselves venturing into all different parts of the building, losing our way, ending up in classes where we heard This is a Senior Class. Gradually getting our bearings, we begin to make ourselves heard with class representation on the Student Council. Being in high school is quite a responsibility. Advisors, Mrs. Barbara Purcell, Mrs. Helen Dadd, Miss Susan Green, and Mr. Loren Manchester act as guides to help us adjust to a new life. Eager, friendly, searching, stubborn, willing. A paradox! We started out as freshman realizing everything was new and wonder- ful. Now as sophomores, we know who we are, and what we are supposed to do. At least we try to tell everyone that. The Class Candy Sale certainly stirred things up around school, and it turned out to be a profitable venture. The Valen- tine Dance gave us an opportunity to show our imagination and creativity. In the next two years, watch out for the Class of 1965. If these are the times that try men's souls, then we will be the next class to do it. 63 , ! L. Putnam 4 Reiner S N - ,.
