The 1948 TORCH Presented By THE STUDENTS ATTICA HIGH SCHOOL ATTICA, NEW YORK VOL. XX FOREWORD The Torch Staff of Attica High School takes great pride in presenting to you the 1948 edition of our yearbook. Now that we. the Seniors, are leaving our sheltered life in these glorious halls. we begin to realize that our lot in this upset world will not be an easy one. With war ravaging some parts of the world and threatening our own country, we must be prepared for what ever is to come, to defend our great democracy. The Torch that our Goddess of Liberty holds high must not and will not fall. Our education Jjere in Attica High has not failed us in that respect. Through sports, clubs and class activities we have truly learned the real meaning of cooperation. We have had the value of preparedness instilled in our minds, and feel certain that it will be of most important help in meeting our future problems. W e can look back on our years with smiling eyes and faces. Thoughts of good times come hack to us; of dances, plays, basketball, soccer and baseball games, proms, balls and every other activity we have engaged in. Every heart saddens a little when we think of leaving high school, but in future years, we know we shall point with pride to Attica High School and be able to claim her as our Alma Mater.  'J ALMA MATER â Near the banks of Tonawanda Stands our High School true, To the shouts of sons and daughters Floats the orange and blue. Chorus: School we love and proudly stand for Let your colors fly. Hail! to thee our Alma Mater Hail! all Attica High! From the hills of old Wyoming Down the winding ways, Come as loyal sons and daughters 't Bring her lasting praise. Chorus: School we love and proudly stand for Let your colors fly. Hail! to thee our Alma Mater Hail! all Attica High! ⢠HATS OFF TO To Luella French, who in her eleven years of service in Attica High School has proved to be a loyal friend as well as a competent teacher, we respectfully and gratefully dedicate âThe Torchâ. Miss French has helped, with guidance and teaching, not only students of the school, but also many graduates. We, the students of A. H. S., hope that she will continue for many years as friend and instructor to all. 4 faculty 5 Our Principal Mr. Edgar A. King There seems to be a definite feeling on the part of many people that public education is not paying the dividends that they might logically expect. We can discount the protests made by those who are traditionally against everything, and those who have the proverbial âaxe to grindâ. However there are many sincere people who question the value of education on the basis of the product produced. namely the students who are yearly graduated from our high schools and elementary schools. So if you as students wish to reflect credit on your alma mater, each one of you will exemplify in your daily lives the highest ideals you have learned. Your parents have made sacrifices, tax payers have paid dollars, your teachers have given a part of their lives, to the end that you will be stable individuals. The measure of their return will be the lives you live. 6 BOARD OF EDUCATION Leo A. Squires....... William J. Healy..... Walter F. Cook....... Irvin S. Domes....... Burt Disbrow......... Edward F. This Board is really the back bone of our school system but they get very little credit for their tireless efforts. They meet once a month to discuss all the problems which arise in running a school such as: appointment of teachers, repair of buildings, and equipment. For all the time spent in performing the above duties and many others they receive no salary, but give their time and hard work, with no thought of reward. When we, the students of Attica High School, stop to think of all the things the Board of Education does to help our education it is hard to find words to express our appreciation, other than many thanks for a job well done. 7 First Row: Miss Metherell, Miss Kennedy, Mrs. Cowles, Mrs. Patch, Mrs. Spohn, Mrs. Watson. Under the excellent supervision of Miss French, Miss Sadler and Mr. Gilbert, we elected a competent staff of officers and set out to make our green horn year one long to be remembered. The climax of the year was our freshman party which proved to be a big success. We entered our Sophomore year with renewed enthusiasm and with thoughts of being something in the school. The two big events of the year were our round and square dances which were good for making money and bringing our class into the limelight. Lewis Smith led the class through a very successful year with the advice of Miss McCarthy and Miss Kennedy. On to our Junior Year and a rank of being upper classmen. Although our first two years were both happy and successful, the next two proved to be the best with added responsibilities and much more fun. Eugene Searle showed his abilities as an excellent president and Mr. Crandall proved to be an able advisor. One of the most memorable events of the year was our Junior play âLook Whoâs Here under the direction of Miss McCarthy. Also to be remembered was the Junior Prom which took place in May. Everyone had a wonderful time and all in all the Prom was a huge success. Later in May we Juniors gave our toast to the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We began the last year in our Alma Mater with the election of Class Officers. Again Lewis Smith was chosen to be our leader. Sue Nordin proved to be a good assistant and Vice President. Verla Welker took care of the secretarial department and Ellen Schreiber managed the money. To represent us on the Student Council we chose Jo Conway and Bill Leonard. By many successful projects such as the sale of magazines, the sale of seeds, our Ball and our play, Thereâll Come A Dayâ we ended up our career in Attica High School wealthy both in wisdom and financially. And now as we leave Attica High, we the Class of 1948 wish to extend our thanks to Mrs. Ranger, and all our other friends and advisors for their guidance through the years. 17 WHOâS WHO Girls Most Popular Joanne Conway Best Looking Betty Calkins Best Dresser Joanne Shreder Most Likely to Succeed Carolann Bey Most Dependable Carolann Bey Babies of the Class Janet Chomin Daydreams Most Marge Pasnewski Teacherâs Pet Ann Flynn Most Dignified Betty Wise Most Lovesick Joanne Conway Noisiest Anne Dunham Best Athlete Sue Nordin Most Talkative Anne Dunham Cutest Barbara Myers Bookworm Sally Wlodar Best Dancer Joanne Conway Most Studious Sally Wlodar Peppiest Marge Pasnewski Shyest Janet Chomin Quietest Mona Causer Skips School Most Laurane Hedger Best Physique Theresa Meyers Giggles Most Lorraine Suess Funniest Beverly Gephart Laziest Lorraine Suess Most Argumentative Ellen Schreiber Best Future Wife Best Future Husband Betty Calkins 18 Boys Lewis Smith Elwin Glor Bill Leonard Paul Smith Lewis Smith Earl Dominessey Don Van Son Paul Smith Eugene Searle Elwin Glor Gerald Egan Elwin Glor Donald Wellman Donald Van Son Arnold Sprague Lewis Smith Arnold Sprague Lewis Smith Fred Mapes Arnold Sprague Bernard Heebner Jack Cook Walter Roemer Jack Leyden Jack Leyden Gerald Egan El win Glor PERSONALITIES Name Usually Found Could You Imagine Will Be Carolann Bey Playing piano Being short and fat Pool shark Barbara Biehl Out Settling down Mrs. Moe Betty Calkins In the Chevie Staying home Mrs. Pauley Dorothy Calmes At horn. We elected Edward Schmidt as our president and were given the careful assistance of Miss Sadler, Miss French and Mr. Barons. The biggest event of the year was our Freshman party, which was a huge success. As Sophomores, we elected Mary Lou Suess as President. We held a get-together party in the beginning of the year, followed by two dances, which helped fill our treasurery. During our Sophomore year both the boys and girls participated in extra-curricular activities around school and gained ourselves a fine reputation as an active class. X ith the aid of Mrs. McKinstry, Miss McCarthy and Miss Kennedy, we completed a very pleasant and successful year. Now. as up and coming Juniors, we elected Jeraldine Willard as president, Barbara Wilson as Vice President. Jean Rifenburg as Secretary, Norman Ripstein as Treasurer, Shirley West and Irving Beitz as class Representatives. Mr. Crandall was selected as class advisor. Vie have held two dances, both of which were successes. Music for each was furnished by the Vi yoming VI oodchoppersââ. X e are planning another sometime in the Spring. Also during the Spring we are looking forward to the Junior Play, the Junior Prom and finally the Junior-Senior Banquet. Vi e have held one bake sale which was an overwhelming success and we plan to have another in the near future. This year as Juniors has been a very successful one. Vie gratefully extend our thanks to our advisor, Mr. Crandall for his excellent help in making this year an eventful one and helping us pave the way for our forthcoming year as Seniors. 24 I 949 ⢠⢠⢠THEODORE ACQUARD RUTH AMBERGER THELMA BEGLINGER IRVING BEITZ BERNARD BISHOP SALLY BUCHANAN CAROL CALKINS KENNETH CRAIG IE AN DANIEL MONA DOUSE MARY DONNELLY MARGUERITE ELEY NORMAN FISHER MARVIN GRAUE GLORIA GREENAN CLARA HACKETT THOMAS HARE JEAN HAWES PATRICIA HAYES NANCY HUBBARD FRED INGLIS JOANNE KEENEY FRANCIS KEHL JEAN KILIAN LAWRENCE LAW' CONSTANCE MARTLE RICHARD MENGS PATRICIA MURTHA HOWARD NOVAK SALLY OSTERTAG IU SSEI.L PIERI GEORGE PURDY JEAN RIFENBURG NORMAN RIPSTEIN DOLORES SAWYER EDWARD SCHMIDT KATHLEEN SENNOTT ROBERT SHADBOLT GRAHAM STANGROVER ELLA TILTON LEONARDA TRZECIESKI FRANCIS WAGNER BEVERLY WARD SHIRLEY WEST ALLAN WHITCOMB GERALDINE WILLARD BARBARA WILSON CHARLES WIND PAUL WINIECKI IRENE WNUK ELIZABETH ZEHLER RITA ZIELONKA EILEEN KOHLHOGEN VERNA SCHAD First Row: Hubbard, Carpenter, Conway, Suess, Zehler, Sennott, Bietz. With help from our advisors; Mrs. Crandall, Mr. Fox. and Mr. Parons. our officers organized a party, a hay ride, and an assembly. The assembly was packed with laughs, talent, and good all around entertainment. The party will remain in the minds of all who attended as a very joyful night. As Sophomores, we entered our second year with enthusiasm and zest spurred on by our accomplishments as freshmen. We elected officers at our first class meeting and everyone agrees that our officers are among the best to be had. Our plans include a bake sale, an assembly and a Spring Dance. We hope that activities will swell our treasury, besides providing everyone with a good time. Our Class has been well represented in the extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs, plays, glee club, orchestra and others. We were well represented on the Junior Varsity Basketball team. We all wish to extend our thanks to our class advisors; Miss Kennedy, Mrs. Crandall, and Miss Cooney, who have helped us plan our dance, assembly and bake sale. We all agree that with their help, advice, and instruction we have had a pleasant, enjoyable, and profitable year. We hope that next vear as Juniors, we will be as successful as in the past two ears. It is the high aim of all of us to use the Sophomore Class not only as a stepping stone toward our goal as Seniors but also as a place to set new records for our class. 26 1950 . . . Vie try to follow our excellent constitution which outlines our responsibilities to the student-body and our duties in contributing to the smooth running of the school. This year our meetings have been concerned a great deal with planning the dates for the many extra-curricular activities of the school. We have tried to give every class and club plentv of opportunities to hold dances, parties and benefits. Vie have also planned for the class assemblies and other special holiday and pep-assemblies. At our meetings we have discussed ways and means of keeping up high social standards at our dances, our parties, our inter-school games, and too, in our regular class-rooms, library, halls, gvm and etc. Vi e know that our school has a good reputation for politeness, cheerful cooperation and helpfulness of all its students and we are trying to keep up that reputation. 34 TORCH STAFF Editor-in-Chief ...... They are studying fifth class music, both modern and classical. Last fall, Attica held one-tenth of the chairs at the All-State Conference at Newark. Most of the Orchestra will be entered in the County event at Perry. This is fashioned after the All-State. The Orchestra will suffer a loss of four violins, one bassoon, and one bass viol when the Seniors leave in June. Last year the May Music Night was one of the best held in a long time according to public opinion. Y e hope it will be as much of a success this year. THE MEMBERS OF THE ORCHESTRA ARE: 1st ViolinsâShirley Balzhiser, Ellen Schreiber, Verla Welker, Edith Wilson, Jean Up dyke, Jane Gramm, Pat Dona-luke, Kenneth Craig. 2nd ViolinsâPatricia Shone, Nancy Hubbard, Carolanne Feasted, Ann Marie Becker. The boys have shown more interest this year than they ever have before and as a result have accomplished great things with their music this year. The tone quality of the boys this year excells their work of the past few years and adds much to their rendition of such songs as; âWho Did , âStout-hearted Menâ, â1 Got Shoesâ, and âThe Old Arks A'Moverinâ. The girls glee club has one hundred and twenty three members who lend their voices to blend into one single voice and who show excellent harmony in putting over their songs, some of which are: âThe Green Cathedralâ, âOn Musicâs Wingsâ, Sweet Babeâ, The Swallowsâ. The whole glee club is being sent to competition this ear, and it will be the first time that Miss Pollack has sent such a large group. A group of fifteen girls are being sent to Amherst High School for competition as well. This group of girls are preparing several songs for this program, which are: âSpirit Flowerâ, âIn My Garden and âPeterâ. One member of the boyâs chorus was chosen for the New York State Festival. Louis Smith represented Attica in this event and sang in a mixed choral group at Syracuse. A county music festival is being held in Perry in May and some members of the glee club will be chosen to represent Attica. Mr. Roberts and captain Howard Herman. We were able to beat Arcade three times in a row to annex the County Championship. Each of these games was hotly contested and Arcade gave our Varsity stiff competition. However, we dropped two games to Alexander in non-league encounters but we enjoyed very much these contests with our scrappy athletic neighbors. The soccer team met West High of Rochester, the city champions in a sectional match in which Attica was defeated 4-0. This game was a thriller, and. although defeated, the Attica team played an excellent game. Attica High may be soon saying good-bye to the game of soccer as we are planning to start football in the fall of 1948. 42 BASKETBALL 47-48 Attica High School varsity team started one of its most spectacular years of basketball under the able direction of our new coach. Merton Roberts. Y ith his guidance a great team, headed by Captain Elwin Glor, was established with a developed pattern of plays and technique. Attica soon started on its rapid climb to victory. Except for the clash with our greatest rival but most worthy opponent, Ferry, the Attica Blue Devils were able to defeat all league competitors. Our outstanding encounters with other non-league teams also proved our superiority in playing ability. In these contests as well as in the league encounters, we lost but one game. A return game with Perry resulted in a crushing defeat for them, and once again we found ourselves, as in former years, tied for the county championship. The thrilling play-off, which took place in the neutral court of Arcade, was a breathtaking struggle for supremacy. The rivals scored alternately and were tied several times in the game. The final victorious point was scored by our boys in the last six seconds of the game by a successful foul shot. At the Sectional Contests in the Sports Arena in Rochester. Attica was defeated by East Rochester. Our team played an excellent game with every Varsity player displaying a superlative effort. The team is surely to be congratulated for its wonderful exhibition of sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical ability. Hail to the new Wyoming County Basketball Champions! BASEBALL Last years baseball team, with Bernard Heebner as Captain and under the able direction of Coach Huron Smith captured third place in the Wyoming County Baseball League. One of the most significant games of the season was the game with Letchworth Central. We defeated them by a score of seven to six thus placing Arcade at the head of the league. With Hare. Whitcomb, and Lawrence on the mound as pitchers we completed the season with seven games topped out of ten. Among the heavy hitters were Glor. Herman. Hare and Heebner. Jay Kosseff was manager. After weather postponed early spring practices, last season turned out to be a good one and a lot of talent was displayed on the diamond. This year s team has a hard schedule of eight league games, and in all probability, several nonleague games also. Many veteran players of last year are back this year and under Coach Robertsâ supervision the team seems to shape up very well. e are looking forward to this season and hopes of the County Championship. CHEERLEADERS Praised as Wyoming Countyâs bestâ, our cheerleaders lived up to their name. Always cheering our players on in victory and sticking by them in defeat, was half of the successful code of the team. Their spirit was felt not only within the team but throughout the whole school. The squad was lead by senior cheerleaders; Joanne Conway and Joanne Shreder; who are to be congratulated for their enthusiastic leadership. Their able assistants were: Juniors; Barbara Wilson, Sally Ostertag, Carol Calkins and Catherine Glor; Sophomores were Carol Cooper and Muriel Spencer. During the year a Senior was unable to cheer and her place was filled by Muriel Spencer. We were sorry to see Lorraine Suess leave the ranks of cheerleaders and we are grateful to her for her fine work in the past. The girls spent much time in rehearsals and they displayed a fine spirit of sportmanship and were thus an excellent example to the student body. Many thanks kids for a job well done! 46 48 49 WYLLIE STORES INC. ANNOUNCEMENT Home of the Moth Proofing With All Dry Cleaning The C. L. Carr Co., Inc.
