THE STUDENTS of ATTICA HIGH SCHOGL AHica, New York N V: Preseni' The I947 TCR We, the Senior Class and the members of the Torch Staff of 1947, take pride in presenting to our fello'w students and friends the thirteenth issue of The Torch. During our four years in high school we have been undergoing a training period in preparation of our entrance into the turbulent world. Through our intellectual endeavors, our participation in athletics, music, dramatics, student government and other extra- curricular activities we have developed responsibility, sportsman- ship, respect for the rights of others, self-confidence, and a sense of values which have fortified us for our advance into the democratic way of life. Reminiscence of our four years is pleasant. We are thankful to our principal, our teachers and our fellow students for the part they played in our career. The study, the fun, and the heartaches taught us facts and ideals which will be 'with us always. The ideals and standards which we have formulated will aid us to share in our in- alienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is with heavy but appreciative hearts that we bid a fond farewell to the scene of our joys and our sorrows, Attica High School. It is our ardent wish that our lives will be exemplary of the prin- ciples we have learned here. 2 WE HONOR E CATHERINE MCCARTHY To Catherine D. McCarthy, who in her sincere and faithful service at the Attica High School, has established a record for pa- tience, we most gratefully and respectfully dedicate The Torch. In her three years at our school, Miss McCarthy has shown us the value of a competent instructor and true friend. Her virtues have not gone unnoticed, for such qualities can not easily be for- gotten. We, the students of A. H. S. most sincerely hope that many more students in this, and other schools may continue to enjoy the pleasure of such a valuable acquaintance. 3 OUR ALMA MATER Near fhe banks of Tonawanda Slands our High School frue, To lhe shouis of sons and daughlers F-loals fhe orange and blue. Attendance Oficer Every member of Attica High School is deeply grateful for the time and energy endowed upon them by the Board of Education. We have indeed benefited from the unselfish accomplishments of the tireless members. Without them, this high school could not be run in unison and order. These people receive no salary, doing everything for the good of the school. The hours they spend at meetings discussing the many school activities are given without thought of reward. If it were not for them, our fine public speaking system, of which we are so proud, would not be here. Many of their projects are for comfort as well as scholastic value. The interviewing and appointment of teachers is another of their many jobs. lt was a hard task for them during the war scarcity. Our fine teaching staff is an example of their good judgment. Every high school in this country is run under the supervision of Educational Boards. Attica can really be satisfied with theirs. Its services have been many. Indeed, when we sum up all the things that the Board of Education has done for us, we all feel very proud to think of them as an important part in our schooling. We really appreciate their achieve- ments and works. The whole student body of Attica High School joins together to express their thanks to these men and women who have greatly influenced their important high school years. i 5 it WE APPRECIATE OUR PRINCIPAL EDGAR A. KING During the school year 1946-47, schools throughout the nation have received an abundance of publicity. Some of the most ardent proponents of education have led the public to believe that schools are a cure-all for all of the economic and social ills of our day. Schools can help in these matters but they must be sustained by such good forces as home and church. Further, and most important, education can only succeed when students have the will and determination to develop their God-given talents to their utmost efhciency. The citizens of Attica, the Board of Education, and the faculty of Attica High School find their greatest satisfactions in helping students grow in mind, body and spirit. You reflect honor on them when you grow in strength and wisdom and in favor with God and man. Edgar A. King 6 . . . . . . . . . . .,1s5l. l,l'illl'if3l1l.' fllathematicx FACULTY lllr. Edgar A. For when we entered this high school in the fall of 1943, we dreaded the four long years ahead. To maneuver us through the first perilous year we elected Margaret Beaver as President, Clive Davis as Vice Presidentg Jean Zink as Secretary, Mary Reding as Treasurer, Betty DeVito and Dick Godfrey as Girl and Boy Representatives. That year we held two very successful parties, under the direction of Miss Van DeWark and Mr. Carl. Our Sophomore year again was successful, due to the able leadership of our ad- visors, Miss Kennedy and Mrs. Pierce, and our oflicers, William Bush-President: Clive Davis-Vice Presidentg Elaine Thomas-Secretaryg Joan Reding-Treasurer: Betty DeVito and Jack Spencer as Representatives. This year was enlightened by two very successful dances and a class assembly in which the members showed their talents. Though our first two years were happy and successful ones, our last two were the finest and best days in our high school course. Under the guiding hand of Mrs. Sands, we doubled our treasury, had a swell time and became widely known as a progressive and inspired class. The officers for this year were Dick Godfrey-President, Harlan McElwain-Vice President, Leola Snyder-Secretary, William Bush-Treasurer, Doris Cuddeback and Tom Wilson as Representatives. Our Junior Prom was one of the few in the past that yielded a profit. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was also a splendid affair. The play, The Groom Said No, under the direction of Miss lVIcCarthy was a great success. 'At the end of the year we had a full treasury and hearts full of hope. At our first class meeting in the fall of 194-6, we elected Dick,Godfrey-Presi- dent, George LaWall-Vice President, Fran Bryan-Secretary, VVilliam Bush- Treasurerg Marge Searle and Eugene Carnevale as Representatives. Our Senior Ball and our play, So Help ble, were our main events and our sale of magazines was our biggest money-maker. At this time We would like to thank our Senior Advisor, lVIrs. Ranger, who has so skillfully guided us through our senior year. To our under classmen, we wish the best of luck in their future years, and thank them for helping to make our years in high school the best of our lives. 16 '---- -,Q 6.-:sv one.:-.seas EEST 1-0JK'NS I-Mix EST FLIRTS Q u U ,SN M057 mdunraso . VVe elected a fine staff of officers and set out immedi- ately to make our first year in the higher grades one to be remembered by all. Our biggest event that year was our Freshman party which went over as a great success and climaxed an eventful year, en- joyed by all. VVe began our Sophomore year with an added zest inspired by our accomplishments in our Fresh- man year. VVe held two dances during the year and our pains were rewarded with success in both cases. lVIusic for these dances was furnished by the Wyoming VVoodchoppers and Don Youngs orchestras and a good time was had by all on both occasions. Many of the boys as well as the girls took part inthe extra-curricular activities around school dur- ing the year. One the whole, a representative of the Sophomore class upheld our reputation as an active class in almost every event that took place this term. With Louis Smith leading the way for our Sophomore year and under the capable supervision of Miss Kennedy and Miss McCarthy, we began and completed an eventful year. With two successful years behind us and a good reputation to uphold. we began our third and most important year in high school so far. VVe elected Eugene Searle to head our officers and lllr. Crandall was selected to supervise our actions during the year. VVe held two dances, both of which were great successes, and had another scheduled, but this had to be postponed on account of bad weather. Our junior Play went over very well also. Under the able direction of Bliss llIcCarthy and with several of our class members participating, it was a great success. lVe've also had two bake sales and sold school pins, both of which netted us substantial products. We are now looking ahead to our Junior Prom and our Junior-Senior Banquet and we hope to leave them behind us, as successful as our former activities have been. This year as -luniors has proved to be our most successful one. VVe sincerely extend our thanks and appreciation to our advisor Mr. Crandall for his help in making this year an eventful and enjoy- able one for all. 24 I948 Carolann Bey Barbara Biehl Betty Calkins Catherine Carpenter Mona Causer Jean Comstock Joanne Conway James Cook John Cook Dorothy Craig Thomas Curry Carl Dominisee Ann lxlarie Dunham Gerald Egan Ann Marie Flynn Beverly Gephart Ruby Gill Elwin Glor VVilliam Harloll Larraine Hedger Bernard Heebner Howard Herman Kenneth Hoertz Gloria Kaleta Patricia King George Knob Dean Lawrence VVilliam Leonard John Leyden Carl lllapes Fred lylapes Dorothy lVIartin Theresa Meyer lylaxine Nimisker Sue Nordin lllargaret Pasknewski VValter Roemer Esther Royce Ann Schallert Allan Schreiner Ellen Schreiber Norma Schuessler Larraine Schulte Marioii Schulte Joanne Schreder Eugene Searle Fred Sikes Lewis Smith Paul Smith Arnold Sprague Graham Stangrover Jane Steele Sharon Stockweather Beverly Stringham Robert Tozier Lois Vander Heyden Donald Van Son Josephine Vitagliano Jean VVelker Verla Welker Donald VVellman Edith VVilson Betty VVise Sally YVlador Charles Zehler Denis Zehler Rita Zymowski Fin! rofzc: King, Carpenter, Stringham, Smith, Paski, Calkins, Searle, Biehl, Shreder, Vitagliano, Myers, Hedger, Mr. Crandall. Sally Buchanan Girl Representative .... .. .Jean Rifenberg Boy Representative. . . . . Norman Ripstein Last year as our class of 1949 entered its first year in high school, we started things off right by electing the following as our leaders: Howard Novak, Edward Schmidt, Catherine Glor, Carol Cal- kins, Norman Ripstein, and Mary Lou Suess. Under their leadership and that of Miss French, Miss Sadler and Mr. Barons, we held our get together party, an assembly and a party later in the spring. All members of the class agree that it was a happy and successful year. With our eyes wide open, as spirited sophomores we entered our second year, which proved our class as one of the most actively engaged in the school program. After an exciting, close and colorful campaign, capable officers were elected. This started the year off with a bang, and we got right into the swing of things by staging a party in the high school, which was enjoyed by everyone attending. One of our glowing achievements of the year was our successful Sophomore Dance, which swelled not only our heads, but also our treasury. At the dance everyone enjoyed the music of the Wyom- ing Woodchoppers. At present we are looking forward to our dance which is to be held late in the spring. We had planned our sophomore assembly but it was postponed by the closing of school due to bad weather. Each and every one of us wish to thank our class advisors, Miss Kennedy, Miss Mc- Carthy and Mrs. McKinstry, who, with their help and advice, made the year more pleasant and en- joyable for us. Now as the school year is drawing to a close we can say we have had a good and prosperous year, but as we strive for our ever-nearing goal of becoming seniors and graduating, we hope for an even more successful year as juniors. 26 I 9 4 9 Theodore Acquard Robert Aldrich Ruth Anderson Thelma Beglinger Irving Beitz Bernard Bishop Sally Buchanan Carol Calkins Evelyn Carpenter Charles Colton Shirley Conway Kenneth Craig .lean Daniel Mona Dohse lllary Lee Donnelly Marguerite Eley Norman Fisher Frank Flynn Lorraine Geitner Dominic George SOPHOMORE CLASS Catherine Glor lklarlene Glor Bernard Graf Clara Hackett Thomas Hare jean Hawes Patricia Hayes Lorraine Held Nancy Hubbard Douglas Huber Fred Inglis Jo Ann Keeney Frances Kehl ,lean Kilian Joyce King .loyce King Margaret .lanish Lawrence Law Gerald La VVall Paul Leitner Anne Lowery Noel lklattison Constance llflartle Richard lllengs Patricia lklurtha Howard Novak Sally Dstertag John Petrie Russell Piere Richard Pope George Purdy Gerald Reding Norman Ripstein Delores Sawyer Edward Schmidt Kathleen Sennot Robert Shadbolt Verna Shad Barbara Slocum Audrey Smith Charlotte Spaulding Hayden Spink Bradley Stangrover Alma Steele Lorraine Suess lylary Lou Suess Ella Tilton Lenarda Trzecieski Frances VVagner Thomas VValsh Shirley West Allen Whitcomb Geraldine VVillard Barbara NVilson Barry VVilson Charles Wind Paul VViniecke VVilliam Youngs Elizabeth Zehler Rita Zielonka Fira! rofw: Zehler, Sennot, Shiller, Rifenburh, Ripstein, Conway, Carpenter, Hubbard. Carol Cooper . . . . .Jean Geise . . . George Rice officers : Our first get-together was a masquerade party. Dancing and games were enjoyed by all and re- freshments topped off the evening's fun. A second evening of fun was held in January when many of the class went on a hay ride. We held our Freshman Assembly on March 2-1-5 a radio program packed with laughs and talent. Many of the members of our class have been very active in sports, school clubs, plays, and the orchestra. As this is being written we are looking forward to a spring party, which will be our last as Freshmen. This concludes a brief outline of our first year in high school, which included both fun and hard work. We wish to thank our Advisors, Mrs. Crandall, Mr. Fox and Mr. Barons for all the help they have given us throughout the year. BOYS' GLEE CLUB This year Attica High School is proud of its line Boys' Glee Club. The Glee Club is composed of 32 of the picked male singers in school. This four-part harmony of blended voices is an organiza- tion that Attica should certainly appreciate. Bliss Pollock, our director, has worked marvels with this ensemble. lklany members are veterans of last year's Glee Club, but there are many new members who have had to learn from the beginning. The Glee Club has to meet during the noon-hours on lVIondays and VVednesdays. ln this little time, lyliss Pollock has built one of the outstanding and finest singing groups that Attica High has yet known. lklany of our school assemblies have been graced by the singing of these boys, and they have cer- tainly given top-notch performances each time they have been called upon. A small ensemble composed of 16 of these boys was chosen to represent Attica in the State lWusic Competition at Williamsville. The large group also competed and won high honors. A quartet was also formed by four veterans of last year's ensemble. These four won top honors at VVilliamsville. The boys who have sung in the Glee Club have gained immeasurable enjoyment and invaluable experience from singing and working with this group. Once again Bliss Pollock has given Attica High pride, and she should certainly be highly praised for her splendid work in achieving this goal. 40 fN Q46 MWLEHES Front rofw: Managers Kosseff, Leonard, Inglis, Harloff. King, our Chefls Club was most successful. During Deerin- ber, we entertained the town's People with a spaghetti dinner. Rumors flew, but no one died, that is, no one made public announcement of their aches. On the whole, it went over very well. NVe made over fifty dollars, enough to prove to the boys that they really could cook. Our dinner was the high light of the year, but we did many other things which proved to be suc- cessful. The beginning of the year saw the boys divided up into groups and at every meeting each group baked what they wanted. Among smells. smoke and dust, we ate royally. Pies, cakes, cookiesg most everything boys like. VVith all joking aside, the high school Chef's Club had a good year. XVe made some money, learned quite a lot and really had fun. VVith the money we earned we had a beach 'party at Silver Lake where we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Presizlenl .... Vive Presirlffnl SI'1'fl'fl1I'y .. TfFl15llfl'7' . . . CHEERLEADERS This year's cheerleading group consists of eight girls, two Seniors: Elaine Thomas and Betty De Vito, three juniors: Joanne Conway, Joanne Shreder and Lorraine Suess, and three Sophomores: Cath- erine Glor, Barbara Wilson and Sally Ostertag. Carol Calkins, a sophomore was elected to replace Lor- raine Suess, who was injured during this season and was unable to participate. NVe tried out many new cheers and motions for some of our old cheers and spent much time and energy on these cheers for the games and at the games. VVe cheerleaders have planned to spend a victorious day out of town in the near future. As two of our cheerleaders, Elaine Thomas and Betty De Vito are leaving us this year, we wish to express our sincere thanks to them for the work they have done. YVe also wish to express our thanks to the faculty and to the student body for the good support they gave us during this basketball season. 46 A just plain lazy D The cuddlers G Senior play B The -If Sharps E Snowbound, no school-too bad H just skating ziroum C Innocence F Ain't we cute? l Swc-ct bribes 47 A VValking??
