In this record of another year of life and achievement at a Christian college, we have the oppor- tunity to take, as it were, another look into the rear-view mirror to see the road we have just taken. As We glance into the activities of the year just past, we might well pause to ask ourselves the ques- tion: Have I established a working program for my life? A great educator once remarked: First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do. In putting this advice into practice you are urged above all things, to strive toward the achievement of goodness of character. The highest ideal is to be the best man, the best' woman, you can be in every Way. There is power in such an ideal, for it makes life high and brings into play all the best qualities of character. Such an ideal also gives enthusiasm to do even disagreeable things. The daily routine of study and Work may sometimes appear to be drudgery. But if our ideals are high We Will not mind, for We Will keep in mind the end we Wish to attain. The purpose of getting on makes everything easy. ' May God help each student to attain the highest ideals while reaching out toward success on the journey of life. E. WILLMORE TARR, M.A. Edith Madgwick Secretary to the Dean

PRE IDE T ,fp I M1..,.s-. . , A well-trained man knows how to answer questions, and an educated man knows what questions are worth answering. The need of our complex corporate society is for such edu- cated men with an understanding of more than a specialized held. This type of understanding is not acquired in a laboratory, nor can it be traced upon a drawing boardg it can come only from living and learning. Q Above and beyond the need to know how to do is the need to know how to live. Many well-trained men never develop this kind of knowledge but are content to remain in the narrow grooves of their specialization. Yet society cannot progress as a whole unless it has leadership that can make wise decisions involving considerations in a multitude of fields. Ruth E. Felton, A.B. There is an understandable concern about developing Secretary to the President scientists' and engineers to ensure the future leadership of the democracies. But no number of such specialists, however im- portant they may be, can guarantee the survival of our demo- cratic way of life. Only understanding as comprehensive as life itself can pro- vide meaningful direction. L. M. STUMP, PHD.
