EARL COLLARD oreword THIS BOOK . . . is a reflection of the past year at Atlantic Union College. In a sense it is a reflection of seventy-Jive years at AUC, since the school in 1956-1957 was a culmination of all preceding years-years that prepared students to proclaim the gospel of peace. This is thy kingdom come- with laughter and love fthe back-breaking kind that brings a brick in each hand and chops down treesj these are the patient people the endless procession those long-ago dead who blessed and began: and their followers who took up the trowel the spade and the song . . . this is thy kingdom come- in the hearts of men to go with small thought of the body but much for the soul shod with preparation and proclaiming the gospel of peace. SENSEMAN Administration ef' , S l .kg fi 'X resident Leadership in this hazardous atomic age demands a fine balance between firmness and pliability, 1 stubbornness and compromise. A great life, today as i never before, requires a careful avoidance of that I rigidity of viewpoint that stamps the doctrinaire or the mule. Our minds must remain receptive and plastic but not be allowed to degenerate into pliability. To the life of the Christian will come many battles which cannot be sidestepped nor compromised. Never to iight, always to negotiate, may leave the intellect unim paired, but the moral fiber is sure to degenerate. Pliability must be a matter of judgment and not a habit. Firmness and pliability are to be , found dwelling together in the well-rounded in all successful democratic leaders of today. There is always room for the man of force, but do not mistake stubborn- ness for force. Some are willing for the church to decide their destiny, some the state. i L God intended for man to think for ' himself. , L. M. Stump, Ph.D. so , ,. A RR., -13 Mm W 5 m . X .fe ff as 17 Ruthe E. Tarr Sponsor After a senior departs from his alma mater, memories still linger for many years. The lessons learned, the achievements gained, perhaps a few disappointments encountered, all of which help to mold mankind into a vital force, remain vivid. The class- room studies, extra-curricular activities, social functions and reh- gious life all combine to produce that principle called wisdom! that trait found to a great extent in some, to a lesser extent in others, which in its fullness is never attainable, yet is a supreme goal to strive for, a goal which often finds its awakening in the various aspects of college life. Without wisdom a man is like a ship without a pilot, destined to be lost in the intricate course of life. Wisdom has four parts, viz.: Wisdoni, the principle of doing things arightl Justice, the principle of doing things equally in public and private, Fortitude, the principle of not fleeing hardship, but meeting it, and Temper' ance, the principle of subduing desires and living moderately. Many things are ever changing, and different theories are sought for. Those who find the elements of true wisdom have gained a precious thing-a valuable asset in finding security am1dSf the uncertainties of life. -Robert N. Edwards, President H ,s. If we clip things from other magazines We are too lazy to write them ourselves. If we don't we are stuck with our own stuff. If we stick close to the job all day We ought to be out hunting up news. If we do get out and try to hustle We ought to be on the job in the ofhce. If we don't print contributions lVe don't appreciate genius, And if we do print them, The annual is filled with junk. If we make a change in the other fellow's write-up We are too critical. If we donlt we are asleep. Now, like as not somebody will say We swiped this from some other annual And we did. llur Advertisers Atlantic Union College lmagine yoursell this picture next year 7511, YlzAR For three quarters ot a century, young men and Women have been coming to A.U.C. in order to effectively prepare themselves for a place of responsibility in the World's Work and in the cause of God.
