Underclassmen Gridders Prepare For Future Role The 1970 junior varsity football team consists of: Third Row: Greg Hagen, Jeff Coomes, John McDermott, Rick Anderson, Dennis Chris- tensen, Kent Kunze, Bill Beatty, Jim Van Ginkle Melvin Campbell Ma John Martens, Doug Guttenfelder, and Rick Waters. Second: Dave, rrow, John Magill, Mike Portz, Mike Newberg, Eldon McAfee, The freshmen and junior varsity play- ers sharpened their football skills this year. Although it appeared that some of the players, such as Kevin Ostrander, danced through the games, they took their falls and put in many grueling hours to develop their abilities. The freshmen, with a 1-3-1 record, were slow getting started, but put it all together and came back to tie a tough Harlan team and defeat Creston at the end of the season. Injuries, such as the sprained ankle of Dan Pederson, were also part of this year's experience. The junior varsity football team turned in a 4-2 season, falling only to Creston and Clarinda. Junior halfback Greg Hagen typified the coordinated Atlantic offense which enabled the run- ners and receivers to score the points. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL A.H.S. The 1970 Trojan football squad be- came very unpopular with opposing teams as the season progressed. Their aggravating qualities included a pow- erful running game, a dazzling aerial attack, and a crushing defense. With senior fullback Don Waugh and senior halfback jim Hoffmann supplying the aggressive running neces- sary, Atlantic's power sweep went, for long gains. Effective, hardhitting blockers like senior guards Dale Retal- lic and Mike Riggs opened up the gaping holes for the backfield to tear through. Senior halfback Dan Bret- thauer added his extra speed and agility to balance the Trojan running attack. In the passing department, junior end Al Wernimont provided plenty of excitement and fantastic receptions. With the threat of the long bomb con- stantly booming, few defensive half- backs or cornerbacks slept while play- ing Atlantic. The solid defense was put to many tests throughout the season, but it came driving back withjsure tackles like that of Jim Hoffmann's to squash the op- posing offense. Key defensive games included an 18-14 victory over St. Al- berts and a goal line stand 14-6 win over Carroll Kuemper. 29
