Our hope is that, in the years to come, you may turn its pages and refresh your memories of high school days-the classes, activities, your friends and teachers. May it help to keep ever bright the thoughts of work, of fun, of your ideals, and of your ambitions and all your hopes, and dreams for the future. O,CONNOR Superintendent of Schools Superintendenifs Message Graduates of 1949 - may you leave Atlantic High School imbued with enthusiasm, initiative, and the courage necessary to succeed in your chosen path in life. If you can take with you only one gift, let it be enthusiasm. The worst bankrupt in the world is the man who has lost his enthusiasm. Let him lose everything else but enthusiasm, and he will come through again to success. No field is too crowded, no obstacles too great, for the man with the determination to succeed. The difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way you use them. Remember that nothing is done, finally and right - nothing is known, positively and completely. Here we are, getting ready for graduation. Graduation from twelve of the most wonderful years of our lives. lf we could only relive them all for a few min- utes. At least it's worth a try. Let's do! First came kindergarten. The only grade in which you were requested to take naps. Could you ever imagine that Freddie Brown just wouldn't sleep and kept snapping Donna Shrauger with a rubber band? And Pete Hopley was just beginning to work for his present reputation. The most thrilling part of grade school was when all the little boys became resentful of the little girl's wearing blue-jeans and came to school one bright Monday morning clad in their crisp little dresses. Who could forget how stunning Eddy Estensen looked? Every class has to have a ro- mance. Ours was that of Pat Thompson and Rod Schupp. Seems theyive changed now, though. Remember how tiny Pat Shea was? Another memorable event was when Janice Smith and Bill Baxter would climb in an old cherry tree and little Bill would be afraid to come down. Look at Bill now, flying an airplane. About this time, Mary Dee Rains joined us. Then, she had her dad bring the car to take her home. Bev Trent has beautiful hair now, but you should have seen her long curls. Anyway, we got to Junior High, to the big school on the hill. Then came the little old parties, on Friday nights, of course. No one can throw an egg salad sandwich like Jim Weitzel and duck it like Dale Rowley. And how about the two clubs the girls used to have, each trying to steal the other's members. Marianne Gunderman, Mary Moore, Carol Destler, and Judy Jones really put up a struggle. It was about now that Bonnie Beekman, Joan Barringer, and JoEllen Arn had to give up baseball and settle down to skirts. Then came High School. We were freshmen! This meant migration from the farm, and Fletcher Chapel. This brought forth some of our best pals, Audrey Nelson, Marilyn Meyers, Rowena Shorty Steffens, Donnis Helbourg, Betty Ann Rock, and Orlin and Bob Sothman, cousins. Carolyn Rothe prefers to say that she came from Lyman, Iowa that is. Who could overlook the time Marilu Brown first saw the boy in the green reindeer sweater? His name? Ken Warne. Bernie Waters came in from a different section of the country, but sheis a city girl now. Curt Masteller was the only one who had enough nerve to talk to the teachers, and Arnold Stone finally admitted he came from Lincoln, Janice F ulks was crown bearer at Homecoming in a pretty red dress. . The sophomore year? It meant another year clipped off of these four beautiful years. An- other successful year in football and Jim Dahlberg, and basketball. We put Darrel Henningsen as our president. Too, we found that Peggy Doolittle, Jody Highley and JoAnn Williams were three to be watched, eh boys? And, we can't forget that LeAnn Coats and Alice Hansen really learned how to dance and had a wonderful time of it. Gene Glynn, Everett Breach, and Dick Smith were starting to drive cars, to school! Our junior year! Ah, yes! Then some of the boys got a chance to study what they'd known all their lives, farming! Who? Leon Nelson, Lamar Esbeck and Silver Opbroak, Don Alff, Morris Blake, and Ralph Chamberlin. lt seems that somewhere, about now, Joanne Rattenbourg, Janice Darrow, Romona Cordes fher twin brother is Richardj, Marjorie Johnson, Wanda Blohn, Doris Peterson, and Shirley Hansen came to find that there were boys other than those in class. Not to mention Jo Hoffman and Betty Muzzy. We found that the geniuses among us were Dale Steifens and Phil Chinitz, just to mention a few, and Chuck Goff started studying forestry, while Jim and Bob Schwartz started studying! fgirls?J Some of our newcomers along the way, were Anna Mae Christensen, Frances Karstensen, Betty Logue, Don Jensen, Francine Clay, Pat Wilken, and Gilbert Pederson. Gayle Marquette and Jim Jorden found their places on the stage. Which reminds us, that George McNary made a swell crew man. How could we forget Professor Burnham. Flash! Vernie Philips found something besides football! Dick Bailey was to become editor of the Javelin with Betty Aldrich as assistant. Here, kids, came ourxsenior year. The big year, when we were supposed to feel so much older and mature, but when most of' us felt small and a little resentful of the fact that we were soon to be out of high school-but happy that we could start new jobs, new experiences. We felt, this way up until the night of commencement, anyway. Then? Then I think we thought over how we had spent the past years of our lives, of the beautiful, beautiful times we'd had. So again I say, here's to four wonderful years and to the best class ever!! LEARNING To Do-Douvc To LEARN-EARNING To LIVE-LIVING To SERVE Through their vocational agriculture courses in high school, Future Farmers learn advanced methods of agriculture which will enable them to become successful farmers. Each boy has a project at home under the supervision of his vocational agriculture instructor. This encourages his own initiative toward his farm practice. The Future Farmers project is designed to give him an opportunity to earn some money with which he can expand his farm enterprises to such an extent that he will become a well established, well informed rural citizen. Leadership is just as essential in rural living as in other forms of society. It is encouraged in vocational agriculture classes to make the leaders of tomorrow better citizens. , T Editor Richard Bailey Assistant Editor Betty Aldrich Business Manager Bill Baxter Ass't Business Manager James Dahlherg l THE JAVELIN Girls' Sports: Le Ann Coates. In each H700 clubv concert, the band received a large ovation from its audience and was also given commendable recognition as a participant in the music contest. A variety of numbers were worked on, favorites being Sousa's marches and semi- clasSical music. Before advancing into this laudable organization, each new member must have completed his work in the junior band. Of the nine seniors five of them were on the starting lineup. VERNIE PHILLIPS, Fullback--Vernie has played four years as an outstanding ground gainer on offense and a hard hitting line backer on de- fense. Vernie rated several berths on outstanding teams this year. He will be missed greatly by next year's team. LAMAR ESBECK, Lejz Half-Although this was his first year out for Iootball, Lamar established himself as a hard driving and hard tackling back. He was always in there punching when the going was rough. BOB SCHWARTZ, Right End-Bob, who played three years of football, played his senior year as a fast charging right end. In any game, the backs would somewhere find open field as a re- sult of this lad's downfield blocking. KENDAL WARNE, Left Guard - Ken has been an alert player this season, as he was last. He will be missed by the squad next year. DON JENSEN, Right Guard-Although he has been in Atlantic lor only two years, Don has established himself on the squad as a rough, tough, guard. Don always gave his opponents a good idea of rough football. He also landed several berths on outstanding teams. JIM DAHLBERG, Left Tackle-Jim has been playing his first season after a severe leg injury received two years ago. He has been a rugged lineman on defense as well as offense. He was honored by several berths on outstanding teams. CHUCK Gorr, Right Tackle-Charlie has been a reliable reserve this year. He was always in there fighting when he was needed. His drive and spark will be missed greatly next year. CURT MASTI-:LLAn, Left End-Curt is one of our four year players. He has been a great help as a peppy reserve end. Curt had a lot to do with our past football record. DICK BAILEY, Right End-Dick has played three years of football for A. H. S. For the past two years he has been a peppy reserve end. Op- ponents found a rough time getting around this senior Trojan end. .-..,...,..,.,,,wM..-.-r, ..,... rw.. v .TT Bob Schwartz Don Jensen ,ae f V - jg? .1 Q vf J Q ,fs f 5+ s Q' Q v. f Q s 1 5. 9 wr M 9 Q52 ff' af ...IFR ...a .. Although the team was almost entirely made up of juniors and sophomores, they had a lot of spirit and fight and made the opponents really work to survive. The team started off with a big bang when they pushed out our host Green- field. The same week the Yates-men were taken out by Villisca, but the Trojans were not going to quit. The following week on December 10th the Trojans squeezed past a highly favored Diagonal team. The Atlantic quintet must have had a jinx on them because in the next game the Shenandoah Mustangs breezed past them by a big margin. The Trojans again came back into the race by dunking Red Oak. Aftet Christmas the air was dampened by a Trojan loss to the Manning Bull- dogs. lt was even damper after the team was crushed by Creston. On January Sth the Shenandoah Mustangs again squeezed out the Yatesmen. On February 4th the men from Troy started a four game winning streak: Red Oak, Creston, Corning, and Harlan were all dunked by the team. The spirits of the team really brightened, but only to be darkened by a double loss. The Yates-men lost to Clarinda and to Oakland in the district tournament. All totaled up this makes nine wins and nine losses. We don't want to forget ,lim Corken's Reserves who also had a very successful season. They came through with a total of eleven wins and seven losses. The pros- pects look very good for the coming years as the team loses only one player by graduation. This is Vernon Phillips who will really be missed next season. A. H. s. The Junior High came through their basketball season on top. As for football they did,n't do quite so well, but deserve credit for a fine season. ln football they won one, tied one, and lost one. They show a lot of promise in the coming years. The Junior High did a lot better in basketball. The seventh grade played only five games, winning three and losing two. The eighth grade played 13 games, winning twelve and losing one. lt sums up to fifteen wins and three losses for our Junior High cagers. Mr. Templeton and the team are to be congratulated on such a Hne season.
