Ours is the first graduating class to have the experience of total integration through all of high school. Although there have been some rough times and periods of ad¬ justment, they have been far outweighed by the good times we have had and good friends we have made. Many of us have learned that a better understanding of others is achieved simply by increasing our self-understanding, which we feel everyone should strive for. Sharon sets the style. The memories of his antics, happy disposition and wonderful smile will remain with us forever. 32 Class of 1975 The Junior year has been one filled with much activity and touched by sadness. The class joined in the efforts for KOPE, partici¬ pated in club and sports activities and dis¬ played the usual excitement when class rings arrived. In December the class was deeply saddened by the loss of our classmate, Tony Rios, in a tragic accident. Culminating our year was the Junior- Senior Prom which was a long awaited and much enjoyed event. The class has a lot of enthusiasm as shown by their parti¬ cipation in the clubs in school, such as the Y clubs, FHA, FFA, Chess, and the mini courses which were new this year. Last year, we had the largest participation of any class in sports. This year, there were 17 sophomores on the football squad, and the girls are also active, so we think we will again repeat this honor. We hope to have two more productive years at Atlantic, and when it comes times for us to graduate, the Spirit of 76 will truly be among us. Members of the class have joined the Y-Clubs, Football, and J.V. Basketball teams, Cheer¬ leaders, S.C.A., Chorus, Year¬ book and Newspaper staffs, partici¬ pated in mini-courses and assisted the librarian. This year ' s S.C.A. The prospects for next year look very good with most of the play¬ ers returning. One player, Mike Byrd, was elected to the All-Shore team. The 1973 football season was a great test for Coach Ashby ' s team. Composed mostly of sophomores, they tried to put it together, but just didn ' t have the spark they needed. The team was led by Steve Sterling and Bill Krieger, both Seniors. Cards in action. Despite a season not up to our expectations, we continued to try to promote school spirit and interest through pep rallies, posters, and the homecoming cele¬ bration. In this time of apathy, we found it very demanding to be a cheerleader. School spirit and enthusiasm seemed to have gone out of style, but we found excitement, new friendships, and a lot of fun in cheering for the Cardinals. It seemed that for a few minutes on Friday afternoon, we were truly a school united. Thanks . . . OyOJLCjD C ' hjLKX 50 Mr. Walker crowns Faye Drummond and Bill Krieger. V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! (please!) 51 1973-74 Boys’ Basketball Coach Ashby began the 73-74 season with seven new players. The team was the short¬ est in the league and were always the underdogs. After four losses, they bounced back to beat the first and second place teams. During the Christmas vacation, the Cardinals won the first Atlantic Invitational Tournament. They owe their success to their sponsor, Mrs. Linda Parker. The cheerleaders were: Faye Drummond Maxine Milburn Beth Ann Marshall Lisa Marshall Gale Wilson Wendy Hope Mary Helen Atkins 53 Girl’s Basketball The 1973-74 Girls ' Basketball team has had much success this year. Losing their first game by 3 points, they since have played up to their potential. Their seventh game was lost because of a lack of hustle and having to play in an unfamiliar gym. With a new coach, and lacking team experience, they deserve a lot of credit for the way they have proved themselves throughout the season. Hustle, Jackie! A new way to plan team strategy, Mr. Peck? BACK ROW: Richard Watson, Kenneth Anderson, Walter Dickerson, Robert Savage, Wayne Drummond, Kevin Harmon, and Mike Thomas. 55 Track The 1973 track team of Atlantic High School had not only a winning season, but an unde¬ feated one. The team topped everything off with an overwhelming victory at the District meet. This resulted in a large majority of the team going to the Regional and State meet. Two club members were elected to offices at the District Conference, and nine girls, including two officers, anx¬ iously awaited to attend the Model General Assembly in the spring. Whether it was raising money for the Jimmy Matthews Fund, putting on a Charlie Brown play, cleaning up the football field, collecting goods for needy families at Christmas, or selling cakes and candies, all thirteen members, with the help of Mrs. Kanipe, enjoyed being a part of the club and its activities. i Sr. Tri-Hi-Y FRONT: Susan Leonard, Diane Lewis, Secretary; Kathy Mason, Chap¬ lain; Betty Carol McConnell, President; Mary Ellen Shields, Vice President; Nancy Fletcher, Treasurer; Linda Purdy, Donna Abbott. The S.C.A. was confronted with one main problem in its attempts to encourage school spirit and promote better relationships: apathy. Apathy seems to pervade our school life. However, a few things were done, such as reinstalling the juke box, playing basketball with the faculty (they won), putting out trash cans, and writing to the Accomack County School Board concerning school regulations which appeared discriminatory. Following action by the School Board, the regulations pertaining to married and pregnant students were removed. We hope that this year ' s S.C.A. has learned from its mistakes and accomplishments and will do an even better job next year. 60 Spectator Staff FRONT: Bonnie McConnell, Assistant Editor; Val Howard, Editor; Kathy Mason, Mary Helen Atkins. Unavoidably, some members have done much more work than others, but all have contributed something, and the Yearbook is in the end a product of all. The Staff wishes to thank Mrs. Barnes, Mr. Peck, Miss Siglin, Mr. Walker, Mr. Richard Smith, Mr. Keith Brown, Mr. DeFaleo, those-who worked with us at the seminars in Richmond and Charlottesville, and all others who have helped us this year. We also owe a special thanks to our sponsor, Mrs. Taylor, for pushing us to meet deadlines, for listening to our occasionally bizarre ideas and helping us put them to use, and for putting up with all the other things a sponsor has to put up with. For an hour, every other week, students could choose between the many courses or clubs offered, or could simply have the period free in a study hall. Some of the courses were: Gardening, Hunter Safety, Tennis, Knitting and Crochet¬ ing, Bridge, Chess, Tag Football, Psychology, Tumbling, and Sports Rules. Many students and teachers enjoyed this innovation to our curriculum. Miss Short ' s Chorus enjoys a practice session. Used by Permission - All Rights Reserved. 107 Trying Something New Quite a few changes have occurred this year. At the beginning of the year, tardy suspensions, after¬ noon homeroom, and smoking permits were all eliminated. The dress code became more lenient, the auditorium was opened to students during lunchtime, and mini-courses were introduced. Mr. Walker was lareelv resDonsible for each of these, and deserves a_ Edward Wilson, Linda Williams, Sandra Flet¬ cher, Mrs. Hunter, Mr. Barnes (in a moment of reflection), Almeda Taylor, Edward Wil¬ son. 108 Some of these changes worked out, but some didn ' t. Because st udents misused or abused some rights, more changes were made in February. The right to use the auditorium during lunch was revoked due to some of us making too much noise and throwing trash around. Card playing was restricted to the lunchroom because of trouble it had caused in some classrooms. To cut down on class interruptions, we were given five minutes between classes and not allowed to leave class - except in case of an emergency. These and other changes seemed harsh at first, but we will probably get used to them. Perhaps with time some of them will again be changed. 109 Mrs. Scott, Jimmy Stephenson, Mr. Swentkowski, Mr. Peck, Eddie Johnson, Cheryl Matthews. Also new this year was an emphasis on career education with speakers, assemblies, and discussions. Te achers were asked to explain to students the rele¬ vance of their subject matter to career preparation. We discovered that a few subjects were necessary for any career choice; some were relevant for some careers; others were pertinent to only a very limited number of careers; and some relevant to none at all. A mobile unit for teaching the repair of small machines and engines was used in shop classes, providing practical experience. Mr. Loyd’s band gave its first concert during the Christmas season. The attendance of a Family Living (home ec.) class by three guys in the Senior Class was also a first. Student-Teacher relationships improved noticeably this year with the involvement in mini-courses help¬ ing a lot. 110 Mrs. Barnes, Mr. Barnes, Eddie Johnson, Darlene Savage, Janice Davis, Mr. Parker. Mrs. Barnes, a new faculty member, brought with her some unfamiliar and thought-provoking teaching tech¬ niques which were at first unpopular. Miss Short and Miss Holmes were also welcomed as new faculty members. Mr. Peck made quite a few changes; among other things, a rug, couch, and parachute in his room created a more comfortable learning atmosphere. He broad¬ ened the subjects he taught. As a field trip, Mr. Peck took the Seniors to D. C. for a tour. The Cardinal Staff wishes to thank all those responsible for making these changes and try¬ ing to make them work. In doing so, they were trying to make things better for us all. I I have we . . . learned something this year that we will value the rest of our lives and that has helped us find answers or solutions to the questions and problems we’ve come up against this year — can we . . . continue to pursue the same goals we had at the beginning of this year and help oth¬ ers to pursue theirs or has this year made us think about our values and change them — will we . . . find the direction that we want our lives to go and when we achieve our goals — will we look back and ask ourselves — was this the year when it all began? val howard Autograph have we . . . can we will we v Vv M. .- ' - v a- 4 U vrv i ■- 4 v i ' i ? i •
