Coach Advisor If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. The words of Thoreau aptly express the philosophy of one who has endeared himself to Atlantic High students in a short space of time. As an administrator of students, he speaks their language using a humane, understanding approach in sessions of discipline. Words of encouraging advice often follow reprimands. As a teacher, he strives to impart knowledge in an interesting individualized manner. As a coach, he is respected for fairness, wisdom, and sportsmanship. With respect and admiration, the Cardinal Staff of 1973 dedicates this annual to its friend. John Gordon Barnes A 45 Year Career Dedicated To Youth 14 In Appreciation John C. Justis and Atlantic High School have been synonymous expressions for the past thirty years. When you mention one, you naturally think of the other. Descended from an old native Eastern Shore family, Mr. Justis has been a resident of Onancock since birth. Graduating from Onancock High School in 1925, he entered Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1928. That same year he married Josephine Harris whom he had met at Lynchburg College. Mr. Justis obtained his Master’s of Arts from Duke University in 1940 becoming the first shore principal to hold the Master ' s degree in Accomack County. He served as a teacher at Exmore-Willis Wharf School in 1929 and at Onancock High School from 1930 to 1937. In 1937 he became principal at New Church until February of 1941 when he transferred to Temper- anceville staying there until June 1942. In the fall of 1942 Mr. Justis became principal of Atlantic High School. During his years at Atlantic High, Mr. Justis has seen many changes and improvement among which are dressing room facilities for Physical Education classes and athletic teams, hard surfaced tennis and basketball courts, and the addition of the gymnasium which had been a dream of his and his patrons for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Justis have one daughter, Mrs. Richard Johnson, who resides with her husband in Parksley. Mr. and Mrs. Justis live a quiet life in a gracious old home on Kerr Street in Onancock. Mr. Justis main avocations are reading, gardening, fishing and managing a tropical fish business. Culminating a career of forty-five years as an educator in Accomack County, Mr. Justis now looks forward to his well-deserved retirement years. With great pride and gratitude, we, at Atlantic High, wish to recognize his past achievements and express our deep appreciation to him as one who has devoted a lifetime in the service of others. His countless friends wish for him many years of continued enjoyment, contentment and pleasure with his beloved wife, Jo, as he begins the best years of his life. A quotation enjoyed by Mr. Justis and one that has been a guiding force in his life follows: I will pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defeat it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. Although as principal Mr. Justis will no longer serve us, yet we assure him his influence, leadership and guidance lives on in the lives he has touched through the years. We sincerely hope that in traveling Route 13, he WILL pass our way again and stop to chat awhile. 15 The Candid Camera Catches The Faculty In Moments Of Surprise, Work, And Pensive¬ ness. • 16 FACULTY free of all things Principal — John C. Lacking experience and depth; and, finding a quarterback seemed to be the main obstacles to overcome. After a first game victory over Cape Charles, it looked as if our anticipated losing season might become a winning season. The following week saw the Cardinals lose to a well knit Onancock team (the undefeated district champions). During the next few games, a good defensive effort usually provided our team with a halftime lead and kept us in the game till the final whistle. The second half proved to be our downfall in most cases, as the nine or ten players, who were playing both offense and defense, seemed to tire and make mistakes. Thus, our record of three wins and seven losses did not indicate the true team effort, as four of those losses were decided by a touchdown in the final quarter. Losing seven or eight players during the season because of disciplinary reasons did not seem to dampen the spirits of the remaining players, as late season upsets of Parksley and Cape Charles were truly proud team efforts. Seniors Calvin Marshall (off. guard) and Billy Ward (off. tackle) were selected on the coaches All Shore team. Also receiving votes for the team were Seniors Terry White and Billy Taylor. These boys and the leadership they provided will be missed next year. i 58 J.V. Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders began early in the summer to make the 72 season the best ever at Atlantic High School. They tried to work as a squad with their new sponsors, Mrs. Linda Parker and Mrs. Ann Hunter. Although the going was rough at times, the Cheerleaders received much support and encourage¬ ment from the Varsity team and their sponsors. During the year they presented some interesting Pep Rallies. One of the highlights of the year was construction of the Thanksgiving Day Game float. During half time, Val Howard was selected as Queen and Billy Ward as King at the Thanksgiving Day Game. Hard To Land This Cardinal! Varsity Basketball Basketball Run-Down Coach Ashby and his team had an up and down season with a 4-6 record. The team finished the regular season in 4th place, but had an opportunity to go across the bay had they beat Central in the tournaments. Although the Central game was one of their best played games, the shots would just not go in. Better luck, next year! 1 62 63 1972-1973 Girls Varsity Basketball Team FIRST ROW: Dawn Shumaker, Diane Collins, Cindy Ross, Beverely Matthews, Karen Roberts, Susan Fletcher, Connie Johnson, and Rhonda Matthews. SECOND ROW: Coach Barnes, Shirley Anderson, Nancy Fletcher, Bonnie McConnell, Karen Browning, Jackie Palmer, Ivory Fletcher, Lynn Wilkerson, and Coach Peck. The Girls Basketball team finished with a 5-3 record in regular season play. Although the team was composed mainly of young, inexperienced players, the team finished third in the standings. They were one game behind the first and second teams who had a 6-2 record. Captain Lynn Wilkerson was hurt early in the season and unable to play most of the time. A determined attack was led by Ivory Fletcher. Coaches Barnes and Peck were very pleased with the team’s performance and hoped for success in the tournaments.
