His courtin' troubles are well known to most of his classmates. Bob's un- fortunate accident robbed us of one of the best tackles on the shore and a team leader. His brilliant line play last season helped us win the champion- ship. The Rotary Club of Onancock awarded him the sportsrnan award for good sportsmanship. Bob is one of the most dependable persons in our class and we elected him president this year. His big smile and crushing handshake will make him go a long way. Football 1,2,3,4, Yearbook, Greenhouse Club, Senior president. Ricnard Earl Conquest Dick usually spends most mornings in school trying to think of an excuse to go home at l2:30g if not, he is trying to catch up on the sleep he missed the night before. Wild Bill emerges from the car, smiles at any good looking girls nearby, and strolls into school. Although not taking much interest in classes, he was rated by many as the best fullback on the shore. His 39 Ford is usually seen careening around school at all hours of the day. His pride and joy is kept shining all the time. Football 1,2,3,4, Baseball 2,3,4, Yearbook, Greenhouse Club V CLASS PROPHECY Time: New Years Eve, 1963 Place: Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York City Your Hostess: Mrs. Barbara Revell Browning desires your presence. Well, what do you know, Mrs. Browning is throwing a big one this time at the Waldorf-Astoria. I remember the times we used to have back in '53. As I was boarding the train people were pushing me around trying to get a better view of the famous Metropolitan Opera Star, Ann Collins. She invited me to accompany her on the rest of the trip. We talked about old times and some of the members of the Class of '53. I learned that Billy Taylor was happily married and because the children had the flu he was unable to attend. The train was delayed several hours at Washington. The conductor turned out to be Bobby Wessells who was waiting for the Hon. Wilson Justice, that well-known congressman, who was staging a filibuster. His argument being, Should Slavery be Abolished ? When Wilson finally stepped on the train he was accompanied by his old friend Arnold Evans, who has become Direc- tor of the F.B.I. They joined us and we continued our conversation about our classmates. They told us that Bobby Fletcher is the doorman at the White House and could not come to the party because he has to keep the home fires burning for the new president of the United States, Spencer Justice, who is very cold natured. We got off the train and rushed on, but someone was hailing us from a helicopter. We found it to be Elinor Brittingham and Betty Richardson. Elinor is now an athletic director in the big city of Farmville, Virginia, Betty is heading a Cheerleader's Schoo1 and is also assisting Elinor when she gets the chance. Also on the helicopter were Shirley Martin and Sally Kellam who are returning after being stationed in Hawaii for two years. They are navy nurses. We caught a bus for the rest of the trip, and who should we see but Elton Scott who was return- ing from Un.iversity of Maryland after being named the most-valuable player of the year as end on the football team. As we arrived at the hotel, we bumped into another of our classmates, Janet Hickman, who was desk clerk. We stopped and registered and talked with her for quite some time. She told us that Joe Conboy, who was star of our basketball team in '53, had just signed a contract with MGM. His first picture will be Life on Mars. We stepped out to the corner drugstore for a few minutes to get a newspaper. We heard a newsboy yelling Extra, Extra, President Justice declares national Holiday!! We bought a paper and read, Atlantic High School Senior Class of '53 has class reunion at Waldorf-Astoria . As we were reading who should walk in but Woodrow Taylor. Imagine Woody being manager of a drugstore. We asked him if he was coming to the reunion. His face assumed a very blank ex- pression as he asked, Oh, is it tonight? I thought it was tomorrow night. As we walked around the block, we met Dicky Mason coming out of the rear entrance of the hotel with several cats, a squirrel, two poodles, and various other peculiar-looking creatures. We knew immediately that they belonged to Althea Gaskins. He told us that she was editor of Vogue Magazine. As we entered the Starlight Room, Mrs. Browning welcomed us. She looked 'charming wearing a pink evening gown, trimmed in green fur. Her corsage was a lovely white orchid. She told us that Billy Moore, the famous scientist, invented the special process for fur treatment. We had difficulty in getting to our table for the people on the floor. The reason, we discovered was because John Hump Wessells was singing the song that made him famous Love Come To Me . Among the people we recognized several girls who we learned are professional swooners employed by Hump himself. Just as the program was beginning there was a loud commotion at the door in the favor of Howard Wright and Jimmy Powell, who are big executives for the Chislers Oil Company in Dice, Okla- homa. Between puffs on their twenty-five cent cigars they were arguing over who should get the years profit. I heard Howard say I staked my claim first, Jimmy . At that moment who should walk in but Rear Admiral Mark S. Fisher who has just returned from duty in the Far East, and Billy Cates, who had accompanied him on the trip. Billy's favorite pastime while there was entertaining the women in India. W Last on the program were Bob and Dick Conquest who are now professional comedians of radio and television. At the stroke of midnight the Class of 1953 bid their farewells and retreated each to his humble abode. During the first of the season Larry Bonawell, right half-back, died as a result of injuries received in the Atlantic-Central foot- ball game. No one can forget the defensive line of Scott, Massey, Wessells, Lewis, Con- quest, Wright and Byrd. In the backfield Taylor, Cates, Justice, Miller, Adams, and Shannon did some fine ball carrying. The seniors graduating this year, Taylor, Scott, Justice, Conquest, Wright, Wessells, Evans, Cates and Conboy, have been responsible for Atlantic's success in the last four years. In Coach Shulick's second year at Atlantic, he did some fine coaching in molding the boys into a fine and clean-playing team. As for the spirit we dedicate it to those who will follow and hope that they will keep it alive. Last year's team having bowed out in the championship play-off by a score of l - O to Onancock after de- feating them earlier in the season by a score of 10 - 4. We will be without the services of our hard-hitting and base- stealing third baseman, Larry Bonnawell. The returning veterans are: Bobby Miller, Spencer Justice, Billy Taylor, Howard Wright, Elton Scott, Buddy Hodge and Carlton Justis. The pitching of Carlton Justis and Bobby Wessells is expected to throttle the 'oppositions bats, while the batting of our own Spencer Jus- tice and Bobby Miller is expected to produce the necessary runs for victory. The find fielding of short-stop Billy Taylor and first base-man Howard Wright is our main defense. In the field the combine efforts of veterans of Elton Scott and Buddy Hodge, along with newcomer Rich- ard Mason should give us one of the finest outfields on the shore. O RJ 'I e. , S U 'Ke11ey 'Ned hir! Hwarerfield The Atlantic High basketball girls of 1952 hada very successful season, by tieing with Onan- cock for the Championship of Accomac County. Although not unblemished, the team ran up a victory string of six, including Parksley, Cen- tral, Bloxom, Accomack, Chincoteague and Cape Charles and bowing to Onancock in a bitterly contested battle. Betty Richardson with her set shots was high scorer of the season, while Eleanor and An- nette Brittingham handled the lay-up shots. With their teamwork our guards, Barbara Revell, Frances Moore and Shirley Bundick did a bang up job of securing the ball from the opposing team. Without the willingness and help from the substitutes we could never have won. Harriette Kelley deserves high praise for managing the team and keeping the score. The best coach a team could ever have is Mr. Waterfield. Under his excellent coaching, how could any team lose? This basketball season will long be remembered not only from the standpoint of tieing for the championship, but from the fine show of sportsmanship, willingness and spirit. i CHEERLEADERS E fkP-X X- .
