They Shall Have the Light of Life 4s stated in John 8:12: He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In 1923, Atlantic Christian College chose to use the last section of these words from Christ as its motto, and incorporated it in the official college seal. The Latin phrase Habebunt Lumen Vitae stands for They shall have the light of life. The Random House Dictionary defines torch as something considered as a source of illumination, enlightenment, and guidance: the torch of learning, therefore the torch became an extremely appropriate symbol for the seal. Each year the Denny Cup award was offered for the best essay on the motto. The Denny Cup award is still active today, however the essay topic has broadened. In 1925, Ruth Skinner wrote the first published essay which read, Light is necessary to all life. Just as plants perish without contacts with the heavenly sun, so human lives shrivel and atrophy without the streams of energy which may be obtained from communication with worlds beyond their own mental horizon. The prism, par excellence, for breaking these light rays is religious education. This, in a word, is the contribu- tion which our college desires to make to civilization. (Pine Knot, 1925, p. 116). We all have a torch to carry, as well as one to follow. It is only when we allow the light to come into our eyes that we truly see. May we all carry our lights of life and be proud of what they stand for. And, may this book stand as a reminder of our enlightenment by the torch of learning.
