Joyner In 1947 Ms. Joyner graduated from Atlantic Christian College with an AB in English. During her school years at A.C. Ms. Joyner was a student worker in the Registrar’s office. Upon graduation she moved from her native town of Newton Grove, North Carolina to Wilson where she be- came a full-time employee in the Registrar’s office at Atlantic Christian College. In 1956 Ms. Joyner became Acting Registrar, and in 1957 she became Registrar of Atlantic Christian College. Over the years Ms. Joyner has worked under the administration of six presidents: Hilley, Lind- ley, White, Wenger, Doster, and Hemby. She has registered over 10,000 students for graduation. When asked about Atlantic Christian Ms. Joyner replied, ‘It’s a nice place to be, it was the right place for me. For all of your years of service, concern for students, and dedication to Atlantic Christian Col- lege, this 1989 Pine Knot is dedicated to you, Ms. Bethany Rose Joyner. 2 They Shall Have the Light of Life 4s stated in John 8:12: He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In 1923, Atlantic Christian College chose to use the last section of these words from Christ as its motto, and incorporated it in the official college seal. The Latin phrase Habebunt Lumen Vitae stands for They shall have the light of life. The Random House Dictionary defines torch as something considered as a source of illumination, enlightenment, and guidance: the torch of learning, therefore the torch became an extremely appropriate symbol for the seal. Each year the Denny Cup award was offered for the best essay on the motto. The Denny Cup award is still active today, however the essay topic has broadened. In 1925, Ruth Skinner wrote the first published essay which read, Light is necessary to all life. Just as plants perish without contacts with the heavenly sun, so human lives shrivel and atrophy without the streams of energy which may be obtained from communication with worlds beyond their own mental horizon. The prism, par excellence, for breaking these light rays is religious education. This, in a word, is the contribu- tion which our college desires to make to civilization. (Pine Knot, 1925, p. 116). We all have a torch to carry, as well as one to follow. It is only when we allow the light to come into our eyes that we truly see. May we all carry our lights of life and be proud of what they stand for. And, may this book stand as a reminder of our enlightenment by the torch of learning. WELCOME 5 Maybe later. The Old Wilson Gym, which was constructed in 1934, saw its last days on campus in February 1989. The gym was located on the north side of the old campus and had been replaced earlier by the New Wilson Gym in 1966. 8 Road crews worked through the fall and spring semesters constructing the new turning circle, while landscaping crews worked on setting the new flagpoles, landscaping over West Lee Street, and laying a new brick sidewalk. Harper Hall also went through renovation and now houses many of the administrative offices on the first floor. . . . in with the new 9 Global Vision During the 1988-89 year, the Atlantic Christian College faculty, staff, and Trustees adopted what is called a “Global Vision.” This new program will allow the students of A.C. to better understand the cul- tures of other countries. The “Global Vision” will include an interna- tional focus on all programs at A.C. and will enhance exisiting cur- riculums with a global direction. Each year during the spring semester there will be one country chosen and represented on campus for Inter- national Week. The college will focus on games, customs, music, dramas, etc. of that country. The first country to be focused on was Britain. Antigone — - ' AC theater group opens season with Antigone’ Stage and Script of Atlantic Christian College will open its fall production, Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone,” Wednesday in Howard Chapel on the campus. This modem retelling of the classic Greek tragedy has been entertaining audiences since the 1940s when it was first used to encourage the French Resistance movement opposing the Nazi occupation. No matter what version is used, the issue is still pertinent: the conflict between the rights of the individual and the rights of the state. Mike Myles of Wilson is King Creon of Thebes who tries his best to avoid putting to death his niece Antigone, Lisa Albright, for violating his law and defying him. Everyone else also tries to dissuade her: her fiance Haemon, played by Ted Warren; her old nurse, played by Suzanne Scruggs; and her sister Ismene, phyed by Lisa Dale Warren. The three guards and the messenger don’t care who dies; they’ll take their orders from anyone. They are played by Todd Williams, Johnny Collins, Ronnie Howell and Thomas Gray Capps. Mike Gurganus serves as the Chorus who sets the scene and comments on the action. Anuj Jaggi is the king’s page while Fawn Powers is the king's wife, Eurydice. Director Paul Crouch has opted to up- date the look of the show. The audience members may think they are watching tonight’s news from Nicaragua, Chile, or even closer to borne. Carol Blake, who is designing the set, has come up with a contemporary set that takes the audience to the capitol just after the revolution. Dr. Gayla Turk of ACC’s music department has composed an original synthesizer score for the production. Curtain time is 8 pjn., Wednesday through Saturday. Tickets are available at the door. BOX 3796 HIGHWAY 301 SOUTH WILSON, N.C. 27895 PHONE 919-237-1508 191 YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND by James Taylor When you're down and troubled And you need some loving care And nothing, nothing is going right Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest night. You just call out my name And you know whereever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall All you have to do is call And I'll be there You've got a friend. If the sky above you Grows dark and full of clouds And that old north wind begins to blow Keep your head together And call my name out loud Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door. You just call out my name And you know whereever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall And all you have to do is call And I'll be there. You've got a friend. Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend When people can be so cold They'll hurt you, and desert you And take your soul if you let them Oh, but you don't let them. You just call out my name And you know whereever I am I'll come running to see you again Winter, spring, summer or fall All you have to do is call And I'll be there You've got a friend.
