Students came to school in August seeing several new administrators and professors. President Doster was beginning his first full academic year having come from Culver- Stockton in January 1978. Dr. F. Mark Davis replaced interim Aca- demic Dean Dr. Kenneth St. John while Mr. Gordon L. Joyner, Dean of Students, replaced Zeb M. Whitejurst, who moved to a new po- sition as Director of College Rela- tions. Even though there was a slight decrease in enrollment from the previous school year, the campus seemed as crowded as ever espe- cially when it come to finding a park- ing place or waiting in lines for books, schedules, ID’s, etc. Although there were not any major structural changes to the campus over the summer, students noticed that rails, ramps, and special park- ing areas had been installed over the summer. This was in compliance with the new federal law for the handicapped. Howard Chapel had received a facelift on the interior which was badly needed and as the year progressed, students walking to and from Hines Hall could hear the sounds of hammers, saws, etc. in the old Hardy Library. Reconstruc- tion of the old library and the admin- istration building was finished in June. The finished product gave the campus more classroom space, a special room for the Discipliana col- lection, a language laboratory and several new offices for the adminis- trative staff. DOSTER INAUGURATED The weekend began with Parents’ Day on Saturday. More than 200 parents were provided an opportu- nity to visit the campus and get a first-hand look at the College and the different aspects of college life and education being offered to their children. Departmental receptions, student entertainment, a family pic- nic and the play sponsored by Stage Script entitled “Little Mary Sun- shine’’ made the day complete. On Sunday, October 8, Dr. Doster was inaugurated in an outdoor ceremony attended by more than 75 delegates of institutions of higher learning in addition to highly placed church and political leaders, many friends, alumni and students. Op- timism appeared to run high for the future of ACC as Doster assumed his role and talked about his goals for his administration and for the Col- lege. The inaugural weekend was com- pleted the following day with a sym- posium dealing with the “future of the Church-Related College.’’ Usually the biggest event for the entire campus community in the fall is Homecoming. But change pre- vailed and Homecoming was post- poned until the spring. The first weekend in October was an historic event at ACC with the inauguration of Dr. Harold C. Doster as the ninth president of the college. 218 CAMPUS SHOCKED Campus students, namely females, were shocked in the fall when two students were raped, one on campus and the other near cam- pus. The attacks prompted officials to take several steps in better light- ing of the campus, extra police pro- tection at night, and informing female students about attacks and preventive tactics to avoid attacks. A male escort service was also enacted for the better part of the fall semester. It took several months for the normally quiet campus to settle back to an easy state. Just when the campus was recov- ering, the disappearance of SGA President Don Berry in early No- vember threw the campus back into a turmoil. A quiet, well liked person, Berry dissappeared without many clothes or other personal belong- ings from his dorm room. Every pos- sible lead was exhausted by the stu- dent services office and local police but it was not until late December that Berry himself contacted a rela- tive and said he was okay and living in New York. Another rape of ACC coed occur- red off-campus in April. Although this attack brought less attention than the ones in the fall, it made female students aware of walking alone without a friend. ENTERTAINMENT Breaking with the past tradition of good concerts sponsored by SGA at ACC, the Entertainment Committee fell short of that goal with its fall concerts. Heatwave and Mother's Finest did not draw the crowds as previous concerts had done. Both concerts lost money putting the concert funding into trouble for the rest of the year. The spring semester started off slow for the Committee, but the end of school saw a spurtness of life in the Committee. The first annual Spring Festival was held in April. Plenty of bluegrass music, clogging and sunshine made this festival a huge success. Topping off the year were the Tams. They performed at an outdoor concert during spring fi- nals. As was the case last year when the Tams appeared, their music and dancing routines gave the students a chance to break away from study- V ♦ ing and enjoy a free afternoon out- side. Under new leadership, students were afforded a new look in the Stu- dent Center “game room” where more games such as pinball, pool and ping pong gave students a place to escape from the frustrations of college. Taking a breather from the hectic routine of starting school, students at ACC showed their talents at the annual Talent Night. Both profes- sional and homestyle acts were per- formed all to the enjoyment of the audience. Coffeehouses, concerts spon- sored by other campus groups, and free movies sponsored by the Stu- dent Center Committee were all in- creased to help stamp out the image of a suitcase college. Plays produced by Stage Script, concerts and special musical shows sponsored by the Music Depart- ment, art gallery showings, and Concert and Lecture sponsored talks and movies all played a major part in the entertainment choices available to ACC students. These dif- ferent offerings gave students a chance to see and hear profession- als and well known artisans display or talk about their works along with the students themselves who inter- preted plays or shows. 219 ACADEMICS: REVISED, REVAMPED, RESTRUCTED Academic quality is always the number one concern for administra- tion and faculty alike here at ACC. The quality was enhanced this past year by strenghtening the foreign language program through a new Department of English and Modern Languages; adding three tracks in business administration for finance, marketing and management; and the implementation of a new ap- proach to freshman English. The Department of Education continued to pioneer through the hearing im- paired curriculum and a new en- trance criteria for teaching screen- ing beginning in the freshman year was begun. The Science Department was busy cutting requirements for Biology majors and working on the feasibility of a medical technology program for the ACC campus. All other departments were also con- stantly striving for excellence in of- fering students the best possible classes. Solar energy was prominent in the news when the City of Wilson and ACC embarked on an experiment this past fall. Project director, Dr. Kim, an ACC Professor, hopes that the plant will be a big step in the fu- ture of solving the growing energy problem. In the spring, the faculty voted in a new absentee policy. Although stu- dents were shocked at the policy at first, the faculty felt this new way would be fairer in the long run to both on and off campus students. HOMECOMING: FUN FOR ALUMNI After being moved from its usual fall date, Homecoming fell short for on-campus students although close to 300 alumni showed up for the fes- tivities. After the parade was cancel- led the week of Homecoming, only several campus groups were able to build campus displays for judging. Highlights of the weekend in- cluded the homecoming dance on Friday night at which time Sabrina Lanier was crowned 1979 Home- coming Queen; special luncheons for those classes celebrating an anniversary; golf and tennis matches; and the alumni banquet held Saturday night in the cafeteria. 220 WEATHER PROMPTS SPECIAL ACTIVITIES Along with the changes in weather come extra-curricular events for ACC students. With the cooler weather in the fall, athletes of all shapes, sizes and physical abilities tried their running skills (and legs) in the annual Turkey Day Race. Win- ners received turkeys, while runner ups won cakes. The spirit of Christmas ran high on campus, especially when it came to Christmas trees. The Student Center Committee chose a hugh tree that went up through the sky light of the Student Center. Christmas break and the cold weather gave students a chance to hit the slopes or just stay inside and rest up for the spring se- mester. One group of ACC students really enjoyed themselves on a P.E. Department sponsored ski trip to Boone. The campus was startled in Feb- ruary when a blanket of snow cov- ered Wilson and classes at the col- lege were closed for a day. Although classes were cancelled, students were busy doing constructive work including building snowmen and other sculptures around campus. They also were involved in making snowballs for surprise attacks on unsuspecting students. Spring finally came and saw the Greeks all involved in their special week of events. Although the Greeks stay busy throughout the year, they put one week in Spring aside to celebrate being Greeks. Greek Sing is the main event of the week and, as in past years, the Greeks really en- tertained the crowd with music from country and western to excerpts from broadway shows. Rain made Activities Day rather muddy, but it did not dampen the spirits of the Greeks as they showed their athletic prowess in competitive races and events. Other activities throughout the week included a penny drive, dress up and T-shirt days, and a special dance for Greeks at Wedgewood. Bathing beauties, beach weekends, frisbees flying overhead, loud stereos and long nights at the library were all signs that spring had sprung and that the end of another academic year at ACC was right around the corner. 221 AN HISTORIC FOUNDERS DAY A lovely sunny day inspired high hopes for Founders Day held on May 1. This year, the day’s activities were highlighted by a ground breaking ceremony at the new 30 acre site for the physical education, athletic and recreational complex, which will be built only three-tenths of a mile from the campus. Honors Convocation was also held on Founders Day on center campus to honor those students who had received special recogni- tion through the year. The day was topped off by the athletic banquet in the cafeteria and a choir concert in Howard Chapel. SPORTS PUTS ACC ON MAP It was a very good year for ACC sports fans. The fall saw the soccer team win the Carolina Conference Championship and, also, the naming of Willie Diamond, a freshman, as an All-American. After a good performance by both men’s and women’s basketball teams, spring sprouted with the track, baseball, and golf teams doing well in tough league competi- tion. Women’s tennis hit a high point in April when leader Tracy Eubanks placed second in the NCIAW Divi- sion Three Tournament in Raleigh. As school came to a close, the men’s tennis team kept the campus in suspense as they prepared for the NAIA finals in Kansas City. Finishing second nationaly last year, the ACC team, led by Coach Parham, kept their winning streak going by taking this year’s district championship in Raleigh. At Kansas City, initial impressions by coaches was that Redlands California would be the team to beat in the 28th annual NAIA tennis championship. In the final analysis, Redlands did prove to be a strong contender, however, they were not strong enough, as Atlantic Christian played to its first NAIA Tennis Championship. 222 GRADUATION IS FINALE FOR CLASS OF 79 In Commencement exercises held May 11 on center campus, 301 se- niors graduated from Atlantic Chris- tian College in the 77th year of the College. Receiving the Scholarship Award was Rebecca Todwin Hodge of Kenly. This award is given annually to the graduate who has received the highest scholastic record for their college career. Marcia Karen Page of Raleigh re- ceived the coveted Faculty Cup from President Doster. This award is given to the senior who, in the esti- mation of the faculty, has the best general record in the college. Miles Stanley, Senior Class Presi- dent, gave the traditional presenta- tion of the senior gift to the Col- lege. This year, the 1979 class presented a mobile that will hang under the sky light in the Hamlin Student Center. President Randall Cutlip of Wil- liam Woods College in Fulton, Mis- souri, a former academic dean of ACC, was the Commencement speaker. Mr. Bruce Riley of Wilson was presented with an honorary degree. The message to the new alumni was given by Mr. Kay Dunn, president of the ACC Alumni Association. CHANGE: RECAPPED The academic year 1978-79 has been a year full of change and yet having the basic philosophy and teaching tradition of Atlantic Chris- tian College remaining steadfastly as in the past. Change can be for the better or for the worst but we feel that changes, both today and tomor- row, will allow Atlantic Christian Col- lege to remain as a competitive in- dependent church-related college in North Carolina. ACC not only gives students a full array of academic subjects to further educate them, but it also gives students the chance to change and grow toward future independence and a role in society. 223 1 TO THOSE WHO HELPED: There are many people at Atlantic Christian College and in my life that helped me with this yearbook, and this page was saved for their acknowledgement. I would like to thank my wonderful staff. They were a good group of people, and I enjoyed working with them. I would also like to thank Jody Sexton for being my advisor. She was a great helper who always knew what to do. Appreciation also goes to Joe Allegood, my yearbook representative, who was there whenever I had a problem (even at 10:00 on Satur- day night.) The special people I want to thank are Teri Davis for believing in me, Milton Rogerson and Catherine Batten for their love and guidance, but most of all, my roommate, Dorothy Creech for putting up with me, and my sister, Jane Norton and my husband, Jimmy Cobb. If it had not been for them, I never would have finished. Atlantic Christian College has been my life for four years, and I have loved every minute of it. Although my life goes on, I will never forget these most memorable years. Thank YOU, Atlantic Christian College. My love to ACC, Suzanne Crutchfield Cobb June 24, 1979 224 ‘
